HoeT Tire Constitution, for a long time,
has been the butt of a terrible archery
—the victim, ns it were, of unprovoked
assaults emanating from that portion of
the Georgia press headed by men who
indulge in the extravagant hope of
achieving notoriety at the expense of
the ruin of others. These attacks up
on the Constitution, with a view to in
jure i&- well earned- 1 popularity, thus far
have proved utterly abortive. It has
■ttood the ordeal commcndably, and still
stands at the bead of the list of Demo
*Tatic journals. There will appear up
on the first page of our next week’s is
sue, an article from the pen of its able
editor—Col. Avery —under the head of
“ Editorial Personals and the Situation,”
which we commend to the thoughtful
consideration of our readers. Subscribe
for the Constitution.
Lorillarrt & Cos.
Wt suppose that most of our readers
have hemd of this celebrated tobacco
and snuff house, of New York city.—-
They have never had an advertisement
in our columns, but wc propose to give
them one without charge.
An Atlanta tobacco merchant called
the house a short while since, to make
some heavy purchases. Before buying,
however, he told oi>« of the firm that
he had been solicited by the Cee Monu
ment Association; to establish agencies
in that city for the sale of the pictures
of Gen.jLecand asked this business man
if he would not subscribe for one. He
received a most abrupt and insulting an
swer, after this wise : “Sir, I would not
permit the picture of such a traitor and
3cbel to come into my house, if I knew
it, much less encourage the building of
a monument to his memory by paying
my money for it. 1 think it an insult
for you to ask me to do such a thing.”
On being asked by the Atlantian if he
did not care for Southern trade, he re
plied, “that he would not give a cent
Ibr it.”
Wc trust our friends and Southern
dealers, generally, will not trouble these
gentlemen with what they do not “ care
a cent for.” Remember the house—

#;wl and Fatal Occurrence.
The Georgian has the following ac
count of the late tragedy in Washing
ton county, which resulted in the kill
ing of Mr. Seaton Grantland by his fa
ther-in-law, Dr. W. W. Carr:
It is made our unpleasant duty to an
nounce the killing, on Saturday last, of
Mr. Seaton Grantland by his father-in
law, Dr. Win. W. Carr. An inquest
was hold on Sunday—the jury being
composed of some of the best citizens
of the county —and a verdict of justifi
able homicide was rendered. To satis
fy the friends of butli parties—who are
of the highest respectability and largely
connected with many of the oldest and
best families of the State and country
—wo deem it necessary to say that all
the circumstances and testimony, as
tftkwn at the inquest, exonerate Dr. Carr
from blame, and manifest a degree of
forbearance on- his part toward the young
man commendable indeed. Mr. Grant
land, who by the way, was a grandson
of the Hob. Seaton Grantland, formerly
of Baldwin county, was residing with
Dr. Carr at the time of the killing. An
unpleasantness had sprung up —from
what cause we know not —and Dr. Carr’s
life had been threatened several times
by Mr, G. On the morning of the hom
icide Mr €* had been quite insulting,
and the Doetor, in order to get away
from the unpleasantness, made prepara
tions to go out to the plantation. As
he came down the steps he -saw Mr.
Gra« f1 .ud approaching with pistol
cocked and pointed toward him. The
Doetor remarked, “ Don’t shoot me, Sea
ton,” or “ Are you going to shoot me?”
Without replying, he continued to ad
vance, when the Doctor raised his gun.
which he had swinging by a strap from
his shoulder, and fired without bringing
the piece to its usual position, amThoping,
as he says, to simply disable the young
man and save his own life. Unfortu
nately the ball sped with deadly effect,
passing through the body and producing
death in a few minutes.
The West Virginia Greenbrier
White Sulphur Springs have for some
years past been the summer headquar
ters of the Southern politicians opposed
to General Grant and the Republican
party. At those headquarter? now, we
ace informed!, General Hancock is the
ihwritte of nearly all the Southern Dem
ocratic magnates, old departure or new
departure, and- Ck» gives- the General a
powerful lift for the Democratic bo mi
nation.—A". V. Herald.
&cff~ On Wednesday night there was
a break-on-the Central Railroad. Pres
ident Wadley was on board. Instead
of lying comfortably in bis bed, like the
president of sr thirty mile road would
do, he sfniek out on foot for assistance,
and sent hither and thither for vehicles
of all kinds to rimove the passengers
and baggage. The whole crowd'remain
ed in Gordon two days, while the track
was being repaired, and he footed the
entire bill. So reports the Macon Tel
egraph.

Another .Disastrous Fire.
On Monday night last, about half past
seven o'clock fire was seen proceeding
from the rear of the store occupied by
E. A, Rich, and immediately the alarm
was given.
By the time an efficient force had ar
rived at the scene of desolation the
flames had so far advanced as to render
the saving of the buildings in the Lcy
less block an impossibility, aud efforts
were made to save goods alone. Begin
ning at Crouch s corner as many goods
as possibly could be, were removed from
every house in advance of the fire until
its progress was arrested at the next cor
ner, the buildings on which was occu
pied by T. J. Hart as a carriage shop.
The losses in merchandise excepting
J. II Crouch, E. A. Rich, Dr. J. 1U
Janes, Knott & Peeples, Crim & Tucker,
and T. J. Ilart, were principally caused
by the removal of goods, all or rrearly
all being removed in advance of the fire.
An estimate of these losses, as well as
those on the opposite side of the street,
also caused by removal, cannot be given
at this writing.
A rough estimate of losses in prop
erty with amount of insurance is as fol
lows :
Building occupied by J. 11. Crouch,
belonging to 11. Rogers, and valued at
$1,500; no insurance. Building occu
pied by E. A. Rich, J. W. Johnson and
It, C. Peeples, and belonging to E. G.
Brown, Esq., valued at $3,00; no insu
rance. Building occupied by and be
longing to Dr. J. Janes, and valued at
§1,200; no insurance. Building occu
pied by and belonging to Crim & Tuck
er, valued at $1,500; no insurance.—
Building occupied by W. Woottcn, T. J.
Hart and Loyless & Griffin, and belong
ing to the latter firm, valued at $2,500;
insured for $2,000. Buildings belonging
to Mr. T. J. Hart, and occupied by him
as a carriage and blacksmith shop, val
ued at $1,000; no insurance. The large
warehouse belonging to Jones & Harper,
and valued at $2,000 ; no insurance.—
Besides the losses in goods not yet
summed up, a large amount of guano,
corn, bacon, salt, bagging, etc., belong
ing to Messrs. Crim & Tucker, Knott
& Peeples, and others, w T as destroyed in
the store-room and warehouse, none of
which was insured. Nor did the dam
age stop here; for the street was'so nar
row, and so great was the fear that the
buildings on the opposite side would be
consumed, that more or less of the goods
on the opposite block were removed, and
besides being subjected to the ravages
of the light-fingered gentry, presented
a inass of dry goods, groceries, drugs,
hardware, printer’s pi, etc. Among the
principal losers on the opposite side
from the fire were Messrs. Lee & Broth
ers, hardware, dealers, whose iron house
was on the side that was burned.
The New York World says of
President Grant’s chances for re-elec
tion : “He •will got the nomination, be
cause his Republican enemies dare not
oppose him with any vigor; and when
lie is once declared the regular candidate,
we shall see nothing in any Republican
journal but servile praises of a man
whom many of them despise and detest.
Os course he will be an easy candidate
to beat, if the Democratic party bring
out a strong and able man against him.”
