00. S. Fulton. h»vi* been bro Tight to a
j U . c mature close by butioX the Trus
tees. prompted, as alleged}'. b}' the cen
surable conduct ui Mr. Fulton, in that
lie received into the school a negro pu
pil. As to the justness or propriety of
the action in relieving Mr. Fulton, we
shall not speak. Hits reputation is cer
tainly involved. He has been regarded
as a gentleman of superior literary at
tainments, unimpeachable integrity and
Scrupulously prompt in the discharge of
the onerous duties of the position he
has so long filled to the general satisfac
tion of a numerous patronage We are
indisposed to thiuk that the Trustees,
the tribunal before which he was ar
raigned on so serious a charge as an at
tempt to outrage a refined community
tv introducing a system of mixed schools,
prohibited too, by the laws of Georgia;
would knowingly or willfully act inju
diciously or without maturest delibera
tion in a case involving the character of
a gentleman in whom so long they have
reposed the utmost confidence Yet the
conduct of someone or more deserves
severest reprehension, The Trustees,
we believe, under the circumstances,
could not have acted otherwise than
that they have done. But we shall only
give the facts as we have gleaned them,
and leave it to the discriminating reader
to determine who is to blame. It seems
that, some three or four weeks since, Mr.
Wm. 11. Morris, hitherto regarded as
one of our most honorable and respected
citizens, conferred with ITof. Fulton
upon the subject of receivit g into his
school a hoy, whom it was his determi
tion to educate. Fulton assented to his
admission to the school. The buy was
entered last Monday, and though of very
fair complexion and with a straight
hair, it was soon announced to Prof.
Fulton that he was a negro. Not bav
in, ejected him from the school imme
diately, and having heard two lessons
before he did so, the intelligence spread
and excitement became intense. Child-
ren were taken from the school, an in
vestigation was demanded and .esulted
in the breaking of the school. Mr
Morris alleged that he had told Prof.
Fulton that the boy was one-fourth Af
rican. ’I his was corroborated by the
testimony of young Richards. Prof,
hniton denied that he was so informed.
The above embraces substantially the
facts in the case. It is, to say the least
of it, an unfortunate affair for both the
gentlemen, and will operate injuriously
against the interests of a school in the
Academy.
The part especially enacted by Mr
Morris is universally condemned. He
confesses to an egregious error in at
tempting to paltn oft upon the commu
nity a negro as a fit school associate for
white children. The withering scorn
of an outraged community is the deserved
penalty of such conduct. We trust the
lesson will be heeded. A wonderful and
a yet undreamed of change must be
wrought in public sentiment before
mixed schools will be tolerated in North
Georgia.
Rrof. Ryan. —Our citizens have
been favored by two entertainments
from l’rof. A. Ryan and his talented
son, Master Rolla.
Ihe Professor delivered a free lecture
"ii Sunday night on “tiro influence of
mental and moral culture, and gave an
entertainment on Monday night, and
another on Tuesday night. Prof. Ryan,
hi his oratory is unexcelled Os Master
India too much cannot bi* said. In his

them success wherever they go.
