Some Plain Talk.
The farmer who allows his <*Srop to
bo mortgaged from year to year for
“ fertilizers," and puts himself under
the thumb oi upeeulators to obtain the
flour and bacon necessary for the sub
sistence of his family, will never become
independent, he will never feel the
pleasure or free-born manhood. He is
but a foul iu the bauds of designing
men.
All he gets goes through a sort of
inflation, until he finds, in the end, that
he has to pay double price for almost
everything.
There is no need for such a suicidal
policy. Practice strict economy, raise
your own provisions and stock, pay
cash for what you actually need, and
demand cash for the products of your
farm; attend to your own business in**
stead of allowing selfish and speculat
ing outsiders to mismanage it for you,
and you will be surprised and gratified
at the result. Try it. Assert the digs
nity of your vocation, and exercise the
common sense God has endowed you
with.
Again, join your county Grange ;i%ad,
think, practice, and, by so doing, be
come an independent farmer. — Georgia
Grange.
Why Farming Poes Not Pay.
An old farmer writes thus to an agri
cultural exchange : “It has often been i
o |
a cause of great regret to me, in looking
over the different agricultural papers, to
see so many complaints from farmers in
relation to their business not paying.—
And then we quote or point to the mer
chant as-an example of prosperity com
pared with ourselves, little thinking that
if they published their complaints as
freely, we should find their papers and
magazines overrun with accounts and
failures. It is with farming as with ev
erything else, not the business that
makes the man. but the man the busi
ness. Farmers, as a class, try to do too
much. It is one thing putting in a
crop, and another to take care of it. I
think that if we were to give the thought
and labor to the different crops they de
mand, our complaints would be far few
er than they are. All the Patrons of
Husbandry, all the clubs, all the agri
cultural papers in the country will not
help us, if we do not try to help our
selves So far as I have**bserved, those
who do the most grumbling, do the least
work and thinking.
Guano Not tiie Excrement of
Sea birds. —The long-received opinion
that guuuo ia the deposits of myriads of
sea-birds, accumulating through 1 ng
ages, is rendered untenable by the re
cent investigations of Dr. Habel Af
ter treating the guano with an acid, mi
croscopic.il and chemical examination
revealed that the insoluble residue was
composed of fossil sponges and other
marine animals and plants precisely sim
ilar iu constitution to such as still exist
in those seas. The fact that the an
chors of ships in the neighborhood of
the guano islands often bring up*guano
from the bottum of the ocean, is quite
in opposition to the prevalent belief.—
Dr. Habel therefore considers that the
deposits of guano must be the result of
the accumulation of fossil plants and
animals whose organic matter has been
transformed into nitrogenous substance,
the mineral portion remaining intact.
Dignity of Work —All work has a
humanitarian and honorable aspect;
runs parallel with the aims and uses of
providence ; shares the dignity of na
tures processes ; and every true worker
is fellow t(i.-x!I the ranks, including the
Deity Ilimself. If any man reclaims
an acre of land by irrigation, or of bog
by draining, and makes it green and
blooming, let him carry his head erect
on his shoulders, and sec that his work
is not unworty of him who, in meadow
and prairie, has wrought to the same
end. This man with his hoe and spade
is a joint-creator of beauty and prov
ender for coming generations. —Sumner
Ellis.
A correspondent of the Canadian
Farmer says : “To prevent the bore
from attacking plum or peach trees no
application is more effective than a
strong sulutiou of Bitter Aloes laid on
with a broom to the stems in the, month
of June. The rains during the sum
mer will always keep a sufficient quan
tity about t'ne junction of the tree with
the ground to deter the insect from de
positing its eggs. This is my experi
ence, and l also cured a Steven- pear
tree which was completely covered with
the bark-louse by syringing with the
same decoction."
How to Select a Good Cow.—
The crumply horn is a good indication ;
a full eye is another, lie.' bead should
be small and short. Avoid the Homan
uose—this indicates thin milk, and but
little of it. Observe that she is dished
in the face—sunk between the eyes.—
Notice that she is what stock men call
a good handler—skin soft and loose—
deep from the loin to the udder, and
has a very slim tail. A cow with these
points never fails to be a good milker.
-o
Sheep and Clover. —These we be
lieve to be the two great agencies that
are to revolutionize agriculture iu the
South, anl the one is the ermpan on of
the other- Sheep will enable us to grow
clover ; clover will help us to keep our
sheep in fine condition.and both togeth
er will work something like a miracle on
our worn out lands. Depend upon it.
sheep and clover are the magic words of
the nevr era of Southern agriculture,
A new wine making establishment

They have thus far this year made some
twenty thousand gallons, and say if
they sell their wine for thirty cents a 1
