A Merchant oa 'Farming'.
'I he following is an extract iD ;n ;-n ;
ftfl lrofs by Elliot ik Cowdin b -fuie the
Westchester (Juunty (X. Y.) Agricultu
ral Society.
‘•lt has been my lot a.s an r.ctiv mer
chant, to mingle with men in almost ev.
cry station of society, in many of the
nations of Europe; and Xam convinced
that no class in any country of the world
is so thoroughly independent, possess so
many real comforts, and have so little
cause for anxiety and discontent con
nected with their vocation, as the for
mers of America. Always an honora
ble pursuit, farming is remunerative
when properly prosecuted; and as a
general rule, it is more universally sue *
cGssful than any other calling. You
may question this statement until you
carefully consider it.
“ Let me say to our young men, ho
not envious of the merchant or the b rik u
er of the bustling city ; but rather i
bear in mind that of all who chase af
ter wealth along the slippery paths of:
commerce and finance, scare -!y mure I
than one in a hundred reaches opulence, j
a few moro obtain a competency in sea- |
son for old 1 age, while nine-tenths mis- j
erably fail crc they have fairly start- i
ed in the race, and for the most part,
die poor
“ Neither let our young men be lured
from rural life —ics duties and its dig
nities, its toil' l and its rewards —by the
glittering bauble of the learned profess
ions. Lawyers, physicians and clergy
men, at the very best, lead laborious
lives. The great body of these are
mere drudge sl —-hard working men, who
pursue the noiseless tenor of their way,
and gain a bare subsistence. If anv of.
them rise above the common mass, it is
unusally the result of years of intense
study and tireless app’ication to their
one pursuit, which, unless they are a
marvel of good luck, will surely under
mine their health, and very likely af
ford nothing to leave to their heirs ex
cept that professional fame which is
among the most evanescent of earthly
possessions. Labor throu; h ufc the
universe, is tlie established order of
things.
“ The successful farmer must ob
serve, study and try. Like all other
pursuits, he gains by what he does with
eye, brain and La id. lie must not on
ly accumulate lVts w'th care, but trace
them to their original sources, examine
their relations to ott Q>’ facts, and then
skilfully apply them to the particular
case before him. lie must rt* ver fur
get that his avocation is an art and a
science, and like ether aits and sciences
is governed by the law of progress
Alas, how many farmers cultivate the
soil to-day just as their ancestors tilled
it generations ago, and usually for no
better reason than that their great
grandfathers set the example which
they blindly follow.”
Winter Care of Horses,
Considerable is written now -a-days
about false economy in various ways.—
My observation leads to the conclusion
thatoue important item is almost en
tirely overlooked, and that thousands of
dollars are lost each year by the careless
wintering of farm horses. Tor in- I
stance, farmer A owns a fine sp in of
horses; lie is not much of a horseman,
but in the summer he works them, and
keeps a man who takes good care of
them. To the fall, after work is over,
the horses arc put into the stable and
fed all the hay they will eat (be it good
or bad) ; are left perhaps a week or ;
two at a time, with little or no exercise, j
and, when they are driven, are let goat i
the top of incur speed. Fa&t driving, |
with stomachs full of undigested Lay, j
is the very worst of treatment. The j
result is that, in a year or two, the i
horses have the heaves badly, are spoil- I
cd for market, and are un bit: to do the •
usuai amount or service on the farm or
road ; au4 i his alone causes a loss each ;
year so long as the team is used.
This could in some degree be avoided
by building a shed with a, yard for ex
ercise, and by feeding food of sufficient
strength to keep the muscles in full
strength. Some say that wintering i
horses in the field on hay alone, will j
cause a falling away of muscle and j
strength difficult to regain. No doubt. :
being chilled by standing in a cold barn.;
is injurious to horses.— Correspond nt

Salting Meat. —Nessler considers
the questions, what are the best propor
tion* of salt, sugar aud. salpetre ? and is
it better to treat the meat with a dry
mixture of the above substance, or to
dissolve the’salts and the sugar in wa
ter and to apply this solution? As to
the first point, he recommends a mix
ture of six pounds of common salt,
three ounces of nitre and one pound of
sugar to every 100 pounds of meat;
these figures correspond very closely to
the proportions employed for salting
meat in England. As to the second, he
is in javor of using a solution instead
of the dry mixture, because this latter
extracts from the meat not only water
but also some of the most nutritive con
stituents. On the other hand, it must
nut he overlooked that salting by
means of brine requires special care in
order to insure thorough contact of all
the parts of the meat with the salt,
and also a longer time fur . übsequent
drying.

Cuke for Manc.k.— The following
is said tr he a good remedy for mange
in swine: First wash the hog well in
soapsups ; then to one pint of lard.while
hot, add one ounce of carbolic acid,
stirring until it is cool. Rub the hog two
or three times with this, and give your
self' no uneas’ness about the mange.
