The king is stinglcss, ‘‘armed only
with his majestic port." Modern sci
ence regards this so-called king as
mother and monarch of the hive. It
is found that she lives four years, and
is hatched from the egg in fourteen
days; while the worker requires twen
ty one days, and the drones 2d. These
strange figures are a part ot the myste
ry attaching to bees ; but a still more
curious fact connected with tins point
is, that the bees have the p >wer at will
of developing common eggs into queen
bees. This is done by removing an
eirg into a royal cell, 'and feeding the
little grub with a substance of a milky
gelatinous appearance, known as “royal
jelly.” These facts have been ascer
tained without doubt by Mr. l’ettigrcw.
one of the most successful keepers of
the day; though what the exact, analy
sis of this royal jelly” may be is ut
terly unknown The chief function of
the queen in the hive ts to lay eggs,
from which rhc.futme population will
sprimr. A healthy queen during her
life is estimated t<> lay (lie enormous
number of 800,000 eggs, ( tftru in
the heat of summer, for nmnlhs togetli
or, she will lay 2,000 a day. \\ hether
these are all alike, or whether some ar
distinctly drone eggs, is one of the nu
merous questions on which all bee keep
ers are at issue. r lhc working bees
form the life and prosperity of the hive
To them belong industry labor, patience,
ingenuity —in.short, all the \irtuos of
the race; and while each knows his
own duty, and does it, the efforts of all
are directed toward the weal of the com
munity. The working bees never live
longer than nine months ; they labor so
incessantly that it is supposed they nev
er sleep. The daily consumption and
waste of a large hive of bees in sum--
nier may be taken at two pounds of lion
ey; it will the industry of the working
bees to bear in mind that beyond this,
such a hive in favorable weather will
often accumulate honey to the amount
to four and six pounds daily. Indeed,
ifc is upon record that a hive once gain
ed twenty pounds weight of it in two
days? It; i* curious that even a wiid
hive of bocs can soon be taught to rec
ognize and refrain irom attacking peo
ple who approach them No wonder that
the ancients esteemed them divine, that
their poet laureate, according to the
Platonic philosophy, assigns them a
‘•participation in the Supreme Mind
and in heavenly influences, and that ,
another speaks of their powers of pres j
aging wind and fine weather. Modern j
science points out that the fructifying
of many flowers is due to the labor of
bees in mingling tbe pollen ; and most
gardeners must have noticed the diffi
culty of preserving a pure strain of any
plant when these active workmen have
active access to other varieties of it.
Within the nectaries of many flowers
the bee finds the sweet juice which we
know as honey, but when this is car
ried home and deposited in wax ceils it
requires to bo swallowed again by the
bees, when it undergoes a thickening
process and becomes honey proper,
lloney gathered almost exclusively from
oil) kind of plant or flower acquires its
special flavor. Thus clover honey is
clear and pleasant both to the eye and
palute. but that made from sycamore
and gooseberry flowers far exceeds it.
Heather honey is much darker than oth
er kinds.— Belgravia.
Feeding Fattening Hogs.—a
hint to feeders, valuable, though not
new, may he found in toe following,
condensed from the Boston Cultivator :
Warm, dry pens should he provided for
your swme, and their quiet and comfort

as well as aids digestion. Too much
rich food is injurious ; the stomach can
.idy assimilate a certain quantity at
once. It an animal loses its appetite
the food should be at once changed,
and very gener dly to something lighter,
as roots, pumpkins or apples. Sour
milk adds much to the growth of the
hogs (a.id we have seen it well verified
that raw meal mixed with sour milk was
much better for fattening pigs than any
other cooked food whatever j berment
cd fond is much preferred by some feed?
ers, and it. is well to give it a change if,
nothing more.
What Hard Work Will Do—A
correspondent of the Dawson Journal
says a negro mao on the farm of Capt.
Whitaker, of Terrell county, with his
wife and two small children, as helpers,
with two mules, made the present year
twenty-one bales of cotton, averaging
live hundred pounds each, three huii'
dred bushels of corn, six thousand
pounds of fodder, forty bushels ol po'
La toes, two barrels of syrup. La addi
tion to this, he had a patch, from which
rio rea’ized one hundred dollars. De
has cleared during the year twelve acres
of land, kept the fence corners on his
farm perfectly clean, and done the
blacksmith work for twenty live plows
♦dut latter at night, lie is splitting rails
with which to prepare his fences. Oth
er colored tenants on the place hate
done remarkably well—averaging eight
hales of cotton to the mule, two hun
dred bushels corn, syrup and potatoes
in proportion.
Tt is predicted. as one of the possible
practical uses ol balloons, that the timfc

work on cluwvh spires and high build

stead of with the dangerous scaffolding
