An lowa paper has the following :
Every woman wii! # teil you that a man
can be I'd eas-kr by put I in.-ran arm
around his neck than by pulling !ii
hair, but we never knew till recently
that the reaton you can't lead a c r.v be
bind a wagon is because she objects to
having her horns pulled. A red shirt
ed emigrant, on his way to Carrol! coun
ty had a cow tied to the end of a cov
ered wagon which held his entire pos
sessions. Rebind with a sharp stick
walked the emigrant-, giving her a snout
welt) occasionally w hen site hung back.
Every now and thou she wouW brace
herself and .-t <p the team, and then in
unclerical language, he would beseech
hot to go on, marking pe
riod with a pr and of Use sharp s.iek.-
Tho poor cow rolled her eyes and pro
traded her tongue, jhe poor emi
grant, too, was dusty and tired, but his
voice and stick didn't fail him. SI e
had suddenly halted the process io.i in
front of the post office, and was shaking
her head in reply' to 1 is earnest-entr a
tics, when a man called out to i.ed
Shirt that lie didn’t “ understand cows
worth a cent.”
“Well, what arc you going to do
ab >ut it?” asked lied Shirt.
“ Why, just lake that rope off h r
horns, and put it around her ucc-k, aid
she’ll lead as quiet as a lamb. It she
don’t I’ll follow her a mile myself.”
The rope was changed to her neck,
and the team started. The cow gave a
look of surprise, and walked along.
“ Well, that beats al>,” said Red
Shirt, and without a word of thanks, he
mounted his wagon. The procession
moved slowly on toward Carroll county,
and the cow followed with countenance
as placid as if she were walking home
at milking time.
Making Rag Carpet.
I have noticed several items in the
Western Rural in regard to mak ng rag
carpets, and the question seems to be,
“ Docs it pay, or does it not pay
Mother and myself have been making
one lately, and L think it economical
to make all our old rags into anew car
pet. Father is very much opposed to
us spending our time in washing, cut'
ting and sewing “those old rags” ihat
sire worth nothing, he says. Still we
work at them, for is it not much better
to have a nice, clean carpet on our floor
than to scrub, scrub, scrub, and wear
our lives away in so doing?
It is our duty to do all we can to pro
long our lives. True, it is hard work
to sweep a carpet, but not as hard in
my opinion as mopping a floor. As for
dust, there is dust where sweeping is i
done any way, aud a carpet is very ensi- |
Jy cleaned, by having a large pan of wa
ter standing near by, ana dipping the
.broom into it now and then
To sum it all up, 1 thing each and ev
ery wife and daughter that lives on a
farm should make a carpet, for it pays!

an annual tribute of 200,000 pound:;
of wax, which presupposes the pi-;.due

To keep honey all the year round,
let it run through a sieve to separate it
from the particles of wax, then boil it
gently in an earthen vessel skim off the
foam which gathers on top and cool it
in jars. After covering these tightly,
set them away in a cool cellar
