Keep op the Practice of Discussions.
A few years ago about (he only exer
cises at the meetings of farmers’ clubs
and other gatherings of farmers were
the discussions of topics pertaining to
farm and orchard. These were gener
ally opened by the reading oi an essay
by a member appointed for the purpose,
and then followed the experiences of
other un inkers, a statement of their
practices, the reasons therefor, and the
resv.lts. By this means the club be
caa*3 an educator of no mean impor
tance. Valuable hints were dtssoimna
ei, and as in many cases these discus
sions were reported to the local or agri
cultural press, the knowledge of one
man or one section became the property
of all reading f'rmers. Contributions
of this nature became one of the most
valuable features cf the agricultural
and horticultural prers, and many a
farmer, hundreds of chics away from
any organ:action cf farmers, reaped
rich harvests o', crops and money in
cc"soonerse of instructions thus re
cel zed. But now 'ho nature of the
farmers' orgnmzaiionc has greatly chang
ed. Their objects have multiplied, and

relations of life in this republican and

in the heat of the interest iu these new
themes, we shall too much lose sight of

turn attention to the ctriet matters oi
the farm and tbo household. Burn
ing is not yet an exaet science. It does
not yield the greatest possible returns,
and it is easy to see that as much may
be made by growing greater and bettor
crops oT grain ai;d fruit, breeding bet

ing implements, and by general econo
my, as by caving 10 per cent, i:i the
purchase cf lee’s and supplies, or in
redrmieg'the cost of transportation and
marketing. The practises of the farm
and its yields, the elements aside are
under the immediate control of the
farmer. M the f ertlement of the oth
er clans of questions enumerated an
hinted at above, are involved many ofch
chisses of : .in and many things not
subject to the control of the husband
man. Toe bird in the bush is worth

Eli'idling I ,and Improving Light Soils.
Concerning the itnricbing ami im«■
provcinent of liglit soils, a writer in the
Camula Mariner says :
All green succulent plants contain
saccharine anl mucilaginous matter,
with woody fibre, and readily ferment.
They should, therefore, if intended for
manure, be mod as noon as possible af
ter death. Idencs the grand principle
of turning ii green crops. They must
not, however, be plowed under too deep,
lest fermentation be prevented by coin
pression and exclusion of air. As was
mentioned above, such crops should be
turned under when in flower, or at the
commencement of flowering, for it is
then that they contain tHe largest quan
tity of easily soluble matter.
What crop is most suitable for the
purpose mentioned above ? It has been
found that clover possesses the valuable
property of withstanding a dry soil,
and in consequence will succeed where
cereals would fail. It also reaches per
fection at a height which permits it to
he turned in, and in consequence pos
sesses a groat advantage. As to the
proper variety, the common red suc
ceeds perhaps as well as any ; for we
must look chiefly to the amount of
material likely to be produced. The
roots of clover idso pos ess a peculiar
advantage in the manner in which they
bind the soil together, thus increasing
its firmness and aiiording a basis for
successive crops of more exhaustive
character By giving the soil a fi
brous consistency it increases its reten
tive powers with respect to moisture.—
The improvement of sandy soil, imv
cynically, c n be a comp ished by
moans of the roller. \\ itlmui this im
plement no farmer can successfully till
a light farm. Compactness is ouc of
the qualities which is deficient in such
a farm, and in cor sequence the moist
ure escapes too rapidly from the soil
and the seed if not sutieiently protected
by the firm envelopment of earth neces
sary to its successful germinati n. The
use of the roller supplies th s quality,
and morever gives to the ground a
greater capability to resist the wearing
Lotion of violent rains.
Hints For Winter.
Give pigs a warm bed and pi i.ty of
straw.
Feed horses according to the work
they do.
Hourly rising is good* getting at
your work early is better.
Remember that the more work a man'
does the more he can do.
Make your her,cry sight and warm,
and feed poultry warm food.
Better hire an extra hand than de
vote your whole time to mere routine
work.
Shelter saves food. It sometimes
does more than that—it saves the life
of the animal.
When feeding hay it is a bad prac
tice to let a horse stand with a rack full
of hay before him all the time.
Breeding ewes and store sheep will

has a medicine been compounded pos
