.Suggestions for Winter Study.
In spite of the convulsions of the com
mercial atmosphere, the farmer has
much to be thankful tor in a generally
bountiful harvest. If he has not yet
realized largely for his produce, and, ?s
a consequence, cash is scarce, lie is not
suffering for food, U3 many are in the
largo cities.
Even in the absence of war, or pesti
lence, or short crops, the curse of reck
less speculation, extravagance and dis
sipation has fallen heavily upon many
of our people. Will it serve as a use
ful lesson for the future?
The season is now fully on us when
the farmer should have time for read
ing, reflection, the laying of plans for
next year’s operations, and social inter
course.
It has often been said that the true
rest of the soil is a proper succession of
crops, which, of course, includes the
restoration of a disturbed equilibrium j
and may it not be said that the true
rest of the mind D a proper succession
of its fruits, produced by healthful
nourishment and labor? In this there
is rest as well as labor.
The American Agriculturist says:
“ The more work a man dors the more
he can do , is a truth which we should
all do well to remember.” Tula, in our
opinion, can only be true under the
conditions wo have named. Nor would
we be understood to undervalue labor
of either body or mind, a happy union
of which is conductive to the best re j
suits. The relations between physical
and mental labor should be better un
derstood and practiced than they uss
ually are. Life is not a mere duration
of existence. It involves the idea!,
which if not the real, at least leads to
it; for all useful acts are preceded by
careful and clear thoughts. A man
must decide for himself the kind of la
bor he is suited for, or rather the kind
of labor for which he may become suit'
ed by proper training, have of
the physical to aid rather than impair
the intellectual. The happy union of
the two, as we have raid, is conducive
to the best results. Some men are
adapted to one kind, some to another,
and some to both. Well, then suppose
a man be equal to both kinds of labor,
it should be remembered that he who
devotes his time to mere manual labor
saves a laborer’s wages only. Some can
better afford not to do such work—oth»
ers cannot help doing it. Gircuui'
stances and conditions must decide.—
Isut to our mind it is plain that a man
who has ample means, in all respects,
to carry on bis farming operations, can
do manual work, to a great extent, only
expense of his mental efforts in
the management of h's enterprise, be it
farming or any other business. But
whether the reader agrees with us in
this or not, winter eertaiuly affords the
time for the farmer to read, think and
lay plans for the future, and he will
have time to do it, if through the clos
ing year his industry has been well dL
rected.
Mice in Orchards.
The Germantown Telegraph com
mends the following way of preventing
the ravages of mice among young trees
in the orchard :
There was a great deal said last spring
of the injury done to young apple trees
during last winter by mice, and the ons
ly remedy that we have yet seen sug
gested is to stamp the snow firmly
around the trees, This is, however, not
believed to be a remedy at all, and we
doubt if it is of |pch advantage. But
our method is a remedy, and we have
tried to impress the fact upon our co
temporaries for the past twenty years,
but we should say. judging from their
ignorance in answering imploring cor
respondents what they must do to save
their trees, that it has received but little
attention from many 'quarters.
It is simply to bandage up the stems
of the tree with an v cotton or woolen
cloths, it of old muslin with two or
three wrappings, letting the bandage go
into the ground an inch or two, and six
or eight inches above the ground, and
tic up. This should be renewed every
autuum if necessary, until the trees
are large enough not to be injured.—
Those who are in earnest for a remedy
will try this and save their trees; but
it will he too much trouble for others to
devote a couple of hours to this labor
annually, and they will rather run the
risk with the mice.
This method will keep out the borer
also, us we have staled on several occa
sions. Babbits can gnaw, when the
stems are staail enough, two feet from
the ground, and would require the
bandage to be much higher. Tarring
would help as a protection, but we have
known in many cases the simple band
age to le all sufficient.
Curiug Self Milkers.
In the Tribune from time to time are
seen remedies for this serious trouble,
all of which are unsatisfactory. When
frames and bars are used exactly right,
in size and shape correspondimr with
the animal, they are tolerably effective
for a while, and then are broken on the
fences or in the underbrush. Os course
a knife should not he employed unless
to take the tail off close to the ears. A
Dutches county girl once advised me
to tie a stick acr ss the forehead of the
haste. 1 ' I smiled, but remembering
that Dutchess county was noted for its
dairy products, I took a tough hickory
stick three feet long, tapered it off and
sharened the ends, leaving the middle
one inch in diameter, with two holes as
far apart as the base of the herns.placed
the stick on theforeehad and against the
horns, and lathed it to the base tlierof
with leather but not wire The stick
never broke or lost off,and in six months
she was completely cured, although she
had it bad. When the stick was re
moved she was milked another term in
peace.’ - Correspondence N. Y. Tribune
