A dispatch sent the Lieut’s and
relatives of Jimuiy 'the
painful intelligence that he died yester
terduy about 12 o’clock in Atlantaofsmall
j)ox, with which he had been lying very
Juvr for more than a week. We haven’t
time to'prepare a lengthy ’notice this
week.
\Yk publish this week a reply to an
article signed “ Subscribers” a week or
two since. All interested in the issue
arc requested to read the article. We
prefer not to give any further views on
cither side, but desire that these corres
pondents discuss the matter between
themselves, and we shall give place to all
their articles so long as they are likely
to be of public interest and do not as
surne a personal nature.
The February term of Gordon Su
perior Court opened session on Monday
last, Judge McCutchen presiding, and
will continue perhaps through next
week. There is on hand no extra
amount of business of a very important
nature. The case of T. E. Bartlett vs.
Foster Blodgett, Superintendent W. &
A. llailroad, will perhaps be finally dis
posed of during the session, and other
cases of lc: s importance.
The Christian Index and Bap
tist.— Rev. E. S. V. Briant, the regu
lar traveling agent for the above valua
ble publication gave us a call while in
town yesterday, lie is a clever gentle
man, a good agent, and the paper he
represents —the Organ of the Baptists
of Georgia and other States —contains
good religious and family reading worth
five times the price of subscription.—
We hope all Baptists in this section as
they should, will support their organ.
,
Tiie Bni Ball.—Friday night the
time the big b ill will be given by our
citizens is quite near, and from the way
things are progressing we may predict
T period of enjoy merit to be remember
ed long hence. A string baud from
•Rome has been provided to furnish mu
sic for the occasion, and a very expensive
supper is in preparation. The mana
gers, thinking Mr. Arthur’s Hall would
hot contain room sufficient, to accommo
date the large number that would be in
attendance, have procured the spacious
"up-stairs of Col. Young’s store. They
Tre determined to make the affair a suc
cess and everybody is auilously await
ing the event.

A Correspondent _of the_Atlanta
Constitution speakiug of towns on the
Westernjfe Atlantic Railroad says of
Calhoun :
New houses have sprung ti|C as if
by magic, and eight more are in con
templation. It also boasts, with much
pride, of a good school—Rev J. L. Mil
burnj Principal. It opened with forty
five pupils, over half of which arc in
the intermediate and clas-ical depart
ment. The fixed determination of tills
people is to go ahead in all their enter,
prises ; every man seems in earnest, and
has a fixed purpose to do something’for
himself and society.”

TWO Foes o r I/cultU
Cold and damp are inimical to health,
and we generally have an unwholesome com
bination of the two at this season. They
penetrate thep-'kin and integuments and af
fect the muscular, glandular and nervous or
ganizations, producing rheumatism, neural
gia, chills and fever, and where there is a
tendency to dyspepsia or liver complaint,
provoking an attack of indigestion or bil
iousness. The best advice that can be giv
en under such circumstances is to keep the
external surface of the body warmly did li
ed, aud to keep the internal organs hi vig
crons working order with die most whole
some and genial of ail tonics, Hostetter's
Stomach Hitters. Gradually but constantly
(liis famous invigorant is superseding the
adulterated liquors of commerce,as a medi
cinal stimulant and corrective, in all parts
of the country. It .will be a happy day for
humanity, aud it will surely come, when
this pure restorative shall have taken the
place of raw spirits as a stimulant iu all
our public and private h spitals. It is not,
however, merely a harmless substitute for
the firey stimulants referred to. Its stimu
lating properties are not its chief merits,al
though in thin regard if surpm . es &’l the
unuted leafed products of the still, domestic
or imported. The powerful influence it-ex
ereises o>ei the torpid and toneless stomach,
the disordered liver, the constipated bowels,
and the relaxed nerves, render it a positive
specifi# ih dyspepsia, liver complaint, intes
tinal constriction, nervous weakness, hypo
chondria, rheuit utisni and sleeplessness.—
All chronic complaints are aggravated by a
cold, moist atmosphere, ai.d it is therefore
particularly necessary for those who are af
flicted with ailments of this nature, whatev
er their type may be, to meet this predis
posing cause of sickness with a wholesome
antidote. Hostetter’s Bitters should be
taken daily at this season by all persons la
boring under cbmiic ailments that tend to
weaken the system.
