How Soil was Made.
Prof. Agassiz said t'nnt all the mate
rials on which agricultural progress de
pends are decomposed rocks, and not so
much those that underlie the soij, but
those on the surface, and ground to
powder by the glaciers. Ice aii over
the continent is the agent that has
ground out more soil than all other
agencies put together. The penotrn- j
tion of water into the rocks, forests, j
running water, arid baking suns, have *
done something, but the glaciers more. 1
In a former age, the United State's was |
covered with ice several thousand feet j
thick ; and the ice moving from north
to south by the attraction of the tropi
cal warmth of pressing weight of the
snow and iee behind, ground the rocks
over —which i3 called soil. These
masses of ice can be tracked by the
hunter. lie has made a study of them
in the country as far south as Alabama,
but has observed the same phenomenon
in Europe, particularly in 1 1 •* Iy, where,
among the Alps glaciers are now in
progress. The stones and rocks ground
and polished by the glaciers can easily
be distinguished from those scratched
by running water. The angular bould
ers found in meadow's and the terraces
of rivers not reached by water can be
accounted for only in this way.
Working Capital.
Another great defect in our system
of farming, is a deficiency of working
capital. By the time, or before his
land and mules and a few common im
plements or paid for, the farmer’s mon
ey is all expended, and in a'rnost all
cases, the ordinary work of making a
crop is done on a credit. Theie is
nothing left for the improvement of
the farm such zs draining, irriga
ting, removing stumps, establishing
terpowers, building shelters, buying
drilling machines and other improved
implements. tfow many have neither
gins nor theshers? Such lack of cap
ital cramps everything, and consti
tutes a formidable barrier to all prog*
ress.
While arranging plans for the new
year, every farmer ought to consider
carefully what improvements on his
past operations it will be practicable for
him to introduce It will be impossi
ble probably, for him to introduce all
the improvements he would like to; but
that is no reason he shou’d m»ke none,
lie can proportion his crops better, he
can begin a rotation, he car* have a
patch or two of the side crops, ho can
economize so as to get or keep out of
debt, an tbe able to sell his crop and
buy his supplies to better advantage,—

Why Potatoes Run Out. —A New
York farmer says, someone asks why
it is that potatoes so soon run nut.—
There are two grand reasons. There
are but few potatoes in a hill that are
fit for seed. Borne are overgrown
coarse, rank, and will not transmit the
original quality. Others are under
grown, and not full developed seed. A
potato of medium size, perfect in all
its parts, with change of ground, will
produce its like, ad infinitum. One
other reason, cutting potatoes between
stem and seed end continually,is wrong.
It requires the stem and seed end to
make perfect seed. If cut, cut. length
wise. Single eyes will run out any po
tato. There is no other seed that will
bear mutilation like the potato; the on
ly wonder is, that it does net run out
completely. — Prairie Farmer.
Words of Wisdom. —The Sanders
ville Herald is full of common sense on
the subject of farming this year. —
These are pre-eminently th»: times for
small fields and concentration of labor.
Put the manure commonly allowed on
ten acrej on one, and save the labor
thrown away on the odd nine. Pull off
your coat and pitch into work yourself.
Raise all your own food. Lead your
laborers. Stay at home, make no
debts. Waste no time. Do a good
day’s work every day, and see that ev
erybody who works far you does the.
same. The Herald tells of a Washing
ton county farmer who made last year
seventy-five bushels o*' corn to the acre
upon what was once poor pine land. —
It does not take many such acres to fill
the crib. (Put these little paragraphs
into practical effect and tight times will
leave your clearings).
Mr. Gerald M assky, an English i
miuor poet, declares that oatmeal is a
brain inspiring diet There is a deal of
phosphorus in oatmeal,” says Mr. Mas
sey, ‘‘and phosphorous is brain. There
is also a large amount of phosphorus in
fish. Consequently*! never n iss having
a fish dinner once a week, and like a
plate of good, thick, coarse, well-boiled
Scotch oatmeal porridge every morning
iu my life.” Ah ! if I)r. Johnson were
only alive.- He would revise his famous
definition of oats —“in England food for
horses, in Scotland food for men,” which
led a Scotchman to say, “And where do
you find such horses as in England, and
fcueh men as in Scotland ?”
A noon bey can frequently hs ob
tained in the winter for little more j
than his board. It is poor economy
for a farmer to spend several hours ev
cry day in doing work which such a
boy can do nearly or quite as well as he
can.
*
A farmer reading a journal to bis
wile in which was the sentence, The
President was re.c ved with three huz- j
zas,” pronounced the last wood “ Las I
sics.” “ More shame for him,” ex
claimed the indignant and scandalized'
lady.
