The Bust »«:nk.
We have been repeatedly assured
that farming don’t pay. and the boys
have believed the assertion and gone
to olerkin?. or teaching, or trading—
business they call it. Bat iecen f ly the
bo k* ha ve been opened—the books in
which the accounts of all the occupa
tions are kept, and being ' footed, we
see whs» t resilj pa vs and what is un
profitable. Binkers, sappos- and to be a
sort of n hilitj, have smashed ; many
(if their clerks have proved t<i he great
rascals ; railroad obligations hate gone
t.-> protest; factories have stopped t>
liquidate, and crowds of the richest and
grandest of mortals, snfflng millions of
dollars, often in a dry, have shrunk
down to he quite common How is it
with the Farmer ? His the panic
touched him f Docs he lie awoke
thinking of the hard times? Not
much. It is true that if be owes more
than he is able to pay, or if he has
bought roors land tuan he can work, ho
is in trouble, and now something must
be sacrificed; but this dilemma was
bound to app ar, panic or no panic.—
Most fsr.uiers are cut of debt, or they
owe so little they can see their way
clear, and the sun rises and sets as
aforetime; the cows give milk, the but
ter comes, hens lay eggs, hogs fatten,
and the county grist mill runsju«t as
though Jay Cooke had never smashed
and bis satellites with him. The tiuth
is farming i* an institution founded on
such a solid financial basis that it can
never break. The farm is not only a
bank, it is a mint, making its own
mot.oy, which is worth just as much
for the of mankind as it was 2,000
yean ago. and as it will be worth 2,000
years from to-day; and although this
money is not exactly the ?ame as green
backs and specie, it is bettor lor it un
derlies all others, and goes beiu.re them,
find makes all other tilings that arc
worth much under the stags possible. l —
yet we have been hearing all
nlorfg that this institution of tin i mi
does not pay. Let u man “ traveJ this
world all over," like Hosin the Bow ;
try every thing, be every thing, he wiC
come at last to see that the surest thing
is a farm well stocked and tilled, and
that there is no warmer place on earth
than by the farmer’s kitchen fire.—

immediately subjecting the horse
hard or fast work. This in a very com
mon thing among farmers' horses. A
journey of fifteen or twenty miles has
to be performed; the owner, through
kindness, gives his horse an extra quan
tity of food ; the stomach and bowels
are overloaded ; the horse begins the
journey full of spirits, but after travel
ing a few miles, he becomes dull and
sluggish, and sweats freely ; lie is pull
ed up, and after standing for a few mo
ments shows iigns of abdominal pains,
by cringing the body and attempting to
iie down ; the flanks are slightly swol
len. In a few minutes he feels easier,
and is driven ou, now and then showing
symptoms of pain ; possibly he reaches
Lis destination, and is taken cut of the
harness, when he may exhibit very
alarming symptoms Another common
cause is feeding heavily when the stom
ach has been weakened by enervating
exercise or long lasting. In road horses
that are highly fed on oats and hay, it
is brought on occasionally by giving a
quantity of green clover or tares imme
diately after performing a fast journey.
Something Wrong.
“ Where does all our money go ?”
This is the try of a good many people
who feel but cannot take time to see.—
If they could go to Charleston, Savan
nah, and Mobile aud sec the bundles of
Northern hay unloaded, they would
wonder whether the North was not pay
ing them back (bait for bale) hay for
cottou. This hay is now selling at
$1.75 per 100 lbs., and the annual
amount delivered at the three ports ex
ceeds iu value $1,500,000. And yet
here in Georgia are thousands of acres
which tow lie in swamp which might
easily be made to yield two tens of hay
per acre, worth £4O, at only the cost of
mowing , baling and hooping. People
will hardly believe it, yet figures show
that the hay crop of Maine is worth as
much as the cotton crop of Georgia.—
Had the people there to buy it, Maine
would become a wilderness. But they
raise all the hay they need and a good
deal to spare, and so of all their farm
products. When Georgia farmers
learn to raise enough food they may
not have so much cotton to soil, but
they will be more happy and independ
ent.
Dry Yards. —How many barnyards
there are in which there is not a dry
spot large enough for the cattle to lie
down upou, where the mire and muck
are so deep that the cattle sink in over
their hoofs! Swine, too, need a dry
place in their yard, and a warm shelter
at night. We have sometimes found
them frozen do death, they were so un
protected. The “ fines and costs” were
more than the expense of repairing
would have been. Poultry, also require
warm quarters, and do notplways get
them. Every time a man shivers this
winter, let him ask himself whether his
animals are having the came experi
ence.
Profane swearing is abominable.—
\ ulgar language disgusting. Loud
laughing impolite. Inquisiteveness is
offensive. Tattling is mean. Telling a
i also hood is contemptible. Ignorance
is disgraceful Laziness is shameful.

Iron in the Blood
MAKES THE WEAK STKONO.
The Peruvian Syrup, a Protect
ed Solution of the Protoxide of
Iron , is so combined as to have
the character of an aliment, as
easily digested and assimilated
with the blood as the simplest
food. It increases the quantity
of Nature/s Oien Vitalizing
Agent , Iron in the bloc 7 , and
cures ’‘a thousand ills, 9 simply
by Toning up,lnvigorating and
Vitalizing the System. The en
riched and vitalized blood per
meates every part of the body,
repairing damages and waste,
searching out m morbid secre
tions, and leaving nothing for
disease to feed upon.
This is the secret of the won
derful success of this remedy in
curing Dyspepsia, Liver Com
plaint, Dropsy, Chronic Diar
rhoea, Boils, Hervous Affections,
Chills and Fevers, Humors,
Loss of Constitutional Yjg’or,
Diseases of the Kidneys and
Bladder, Female Complaints,
and all diseases originating in
a bad state of the blood, or ac
companied by debility or a low
state of the system. Being free
from Alcohol, in any form, its
energizing effects arc not fol*
lowed by corresponding reax*
tion, but are permanent, infu
sing strength, vigor, and new
life into all parts of tJ:a system,
and building up an Iren. Con
stitution.
Thousands have been char ged
by the use of this remedy, from
weak, sickly, suffering crea
tures, to strong, healthy, and
happy men and womens and
invalids cannot reasonably hes
itate to give it a trial.
