Why Do Not i Keep Beesi
A* the last uioetinj; of the .Northeast
ern liee-Kcopcrs’ Association, Mr. M.
Qijinby of St. JohnsviJle, N. Y., read a
paper on the above subject. He thought
that bee keepers should present induce
meuta to farmers to engage in the busi
ness. Most of the inducements have
been presented unskillful!/. The prin
cipal object has been to got some patent
hive generally introduced. Practical
knowledge, of management cannot be
bought, but must be learned by experi
ence. Nine out of ten of these patent
hives can be found piled up in lofts and
outhouses, instead of containing bees.
Success is certain even in limited local
ities. Two years ago, at a discussion at
a State Agricultural Society meeting, it
was shown that one man hid secured
in one season 25.000 pounds of surplus
honey and saved his bees for auolher
season, bis sales amounting to over
$7,000. The object in making this
statement was to show that the most of
the bee pasture in the country is lost
There is room enough for alt the enter
prise likely to be enlisted for the next
one hundred years. There is no lack of
hooey to gather; there is no lack of
knowledge and information on the sub
ject. Farmers will not embark in any
enterprise unless there is 9ome certain
ty as to the average pecuniary profit.
The last two winters have been ca
lamitous in loss of stock, and a9 yet no
satisfactory remedy has been given.—
Among all the theories advanced, only
a small part as yet seems probable. No
two keepers agree exactly as to the
cause of what is called dysentery A
thorough examination and diagnosis of
this disease would no doubt result in
some generally successful remedy. If
bees can be made to pass the winter as
safely as cattle or horses, we shall have
taken one important step towards ad
vancing the>nterests of bee keeping.—
The fear of stings is in the way of pro
gression. A man can do but little in
studying the nature of bees who is con
stantly thinking of stings instead of
studies. If he studies the sting he
must get rid’of the fear of it, or little
will be learned. The smoke of rotten
wood, rags, paper or tobacco will neu"
tralize the smell of the poison, which is
present when bees are irritated, and the
bees are rendered quiet and do not at
tempt to sting. This fact, of generally
known, would render the care of bees
attractive, instead of its being a dread.
Ladies, and even farmers’ sons would
find bee keeping profitable if they would
once learn the necessary details of
management. The essayist in this pa
per endeavored to give some reasons
why farmers do not keep bees, and also
some reasons why they can and should.
A Gardener’s Barometer.
The common camphor bottle makes a
very cloudy index of atmospheric weight
and weather changes, on which the ‘ol»
lowing is an improvement. Dissolve
two and one-half drachms of camphor
in eleven fluid drachms cf alcohol. Put
thirty-eight grains of nitrate of potash
(saltpetre), and thirty eight groins of
muriate of ammonia (sal ammoniac),
into nine fluid drachms of water;
when all are perfectly dissolved, mix
the two solutions. Shake them well in
a two or four ounce white glass vial,
cork very closely, or, better, tic over the
mouth a piece of linen or cotton cloth,
and place the instrument in a good light,
out of. the sunshine, where it can be ob
served without handling.
When the weather is fine and clear,
the fluid is also ; but.onthe least change,
the chemicals which lie as a sediment,
rise in beautiful frond like crystals pro
portionately, and again duly subside.—
l»y watching these changes one soon
becomes able to predict the changes
probable for a few hours to come in any
locality. This instrument is also a pret
ty philosophical toy, showing how sen
sitive some chemicals are to atmosphere
ic influences.
Permanent Grass.
Water meadows are amongst the most
productue of permanent grass lands.—
But the management of water mead
ows is very frequently injudicious
No cattle should be allowed upon an ir
rigated meadow, nor should the water
be permitted to run continually over
one spot. A meadow thus treated very
soon becomes a morass, and is then
spoiled. A dressing of bone-dust is re
markably beneficial to grass and iuiprov
ing the quality of the hay. An appli
cation ot plaster the next year still fur
ther improves the meadow. As soon
as the hay becomes inferior in quality
and decreases in quantity it is restored
by a repetition of this treatment. The
opportunities of making water meadows
are frequent, and as their value becomes
appreciated they will become much more
comtnou than they now are.
Hens in Place of Dogs. —There is
hardly a family that does not throw
away enough table scraps to feed at
least half a dozen hens, and many that
keep a nuisance in the shape of a doer,
that does no good, but costs more than
a dozen good hens. One dog in a neigh
borhood is generally a greater trouble
than a flack of hens would bo, for if
hens are feed well at home they will
rarely go away. But who ever saw a
d>g 1 11 J.t was not a pest, running across
anew made garden and sticking his
nose into everything? Kill off the curs
and give the food to the hens, and you
will Gnu pleasure as well as profit in so
doing. 1 hose that are of value as watch
dogs could bo trained, while the host of
only, snarling curs would give place to
some more useful pete.— Poultry Stand

Something New Under the Sun,
Anew era is dawning upon the life of wo

to her the “ direful spring of woes unnum

the hoypl of poverty alike woman has been
the constant yet patient victim ofa thousand
ills unknown to man ; and these without a

the hour of her redemption has come. She
will suffer no more, for Dr. J. Bradfield’s

it in my family with the utmost sa.isfacsion,
and have recommended it to two or three
other families and they have found it just
what it is recommended. The females who
