A Good I'feld of Cora.
A farmer of Virginia gives an in
teresting account of the method ho pur
sued to secure a good crop of core in
Smyth county. He began on a very
poor farm in 1859, of which he devoted
161 acres to corn. The yield was small
In 1866 he tgai# planted in corn, with
much better results. The tract wan
theu turned over to gr* —< and mowed
and pastured up to the wnec of IS7i
and 1871a. At this time manure from
the barn was spread on the thinnest
parts, and during the winter the field
was plowed to the depth of 10 to Id
inches, after which slacked lime, to the
amount of GO bushels per acre, was ap
plied, ar*.d the load harrowed five times,
thoroughly uixbg lime and soil. About
May 1, the corn ;ras planted ia rows,
2% feet apaifc. Whcu it came up about
one bushel of plaster par care was
spread, and the spaoes between the rows
were thoroughly plowed to the depth of
12 lo 13 inches. It was now thinned,
leaving two stalks to a bill; replanting
was done, and cutting “ trash” from the
hills with the hoe; no other work with
this implement was doue. From the
20th to 27th of Juno 'plowed with
broad shovel-plows, and afterward with
the long coulter .plow; thoroughly
erased all traces of the shovel, except
at the hills. In September, from lGth
to 15th, cut up and shocked; and in
December cribbed. Yield from the IG£
acres, 1,500 bushels, or an average of
90 10>11 bushels ner Ci 3< Seme acres
of the field yielded an high as 125 bush
els. Corn planted, white gourd seed ;
soil, a clay loam, very well adapted to
blue-grass, when in un improved condi
tion.— Report Department Agricul
ture.
The Use of Tools.
The importance of teaching boys the
use of tools is too often forgotten. The
following, from the Kentucky corres
pondent of the Ohio Farmer who is
worthy the attention of every farmer who
is bringing boys upon the farm: Were
inera’ sous rightly instructed, and the
same pains takenin teaching them the
use and skillful appliance of mechanical
tools that there is in teaching them the
proper use and haudling of agricultural
implements and farm tools, when they
are growing up, there is but little doubt
but what each and all of theta could be
made as good mechanics as farmers ;
aad as a proper understanding of both
are necessary to a farmer, there is ev
ery reason to hope that farm boys will
at no very distant period be instructed
in both, instead of agriculture alone, as
is now too much practiced. On a farm
there is always something in the way of
repairing building, farm inplcments, etc.
that must-be done, and if a farmer utu
derstands the me of t*:ole so as to be
able to apply them with some degree of
skill and do this kind of work himself,
end thus be quite independent of regu
lar mechanics who nearly always charge
extravagant prices for the little jobs
they undertake, a considerable Jaum of
money can be saved every year. But
little time need be lost either by a far
mer doing such work, as he caa do the
most that he wants done in a shop on
stormy, wet days, when but little else
can be done.
Effects of Tar ou Fruit Trees.
1 wish to state a curious effect of tar
upon fruit frees vrbicb came under my
observation this year, aud I hope it may
prove u warning to all your readers who
may think of painting trees to prevent
hares or rabbits from barking them or
for any other purpose. These trees
painted from the ground upward, ono
or two feet; almost every tree—apple,
pair, pesch, quince, aod ail—ceased to
grow where painted, while lhat part, of
the body above the painted portion con
tinued to grow, empaud, and thrive, as
if nothing had happeued—the bark,
branches and leaves all looking very
thrifty. A few of the trees died sud
denly while in full leaf; the others are
now fine looking above, but the body
where the tar covered it, looks a3
though it had had a laced jacket of iron
arouud it for one year, and is a half
inch or more less in diameter. I think
the whole orchard will finally die, for
some of the trees, from weakness of the
stem below and growing weight above,
are toppling over. Does this not show
that the entire bark of a tree as well as
the leaf is an organ of respiration ? I
ehall continue my observations, andgivn
you the result.— R. M. Wilson , in
Southern Farm Home.
Use for Leaves.—As we have lots
of these fall flyers lying around loose
on every field, and ia every forest, it
may be well for our readers to know
that we hear tell of a man who recent
ly tanned several sides of leather with
lye leached from forest leaves. He has
been experimenting with leaves for two
months, with satiniaclory results. One
tou of leaves, it is asserted, will tan as
muoh leather as five, cords of bark, and
wil complete tbe prseess in hall the
time. When leaves and bark are mix
ed in equal proportions, one-fourth of
the time is saved. The leather tanned
by this process, it is claimed, is more
flexible and smoother thau tbwt tanned
by bark, while the strength of tbe raw
bide is retained id a greater degree.—
Exchange.
A series of experiments made by
Professor Vi He, ia France show that
the diseases that attack the potato are in
part the result of a deficiency in the
supply of potash in the soil. For five
years in succession tbe Professor plant
ed potatoes in r.be same soil wilhout any
fertilizer; to other plots of ground he
added fertilizers that did not contain
potash. Id all these cases the fruit le
came diseased in the month of May,
while on the other plots, where potash
wa* supplied in sufficient quantity, the
plants were healthy and yielded an ex
cellen* product.— Exchange.

THE GREAT REMEDY TOR
consumption
which can be cured by a
timely resort to this stand
ard preparation, as has been
proved by the hundreds of
testimonials received by the
proprietors. It is acknowl
edged by many prominent
physicians to be the most
reliable preparation ever in
troduced for the relief and
cure of all Lung complaints,
and is offered to the public,
sanctioned by the experience
of over forty years. 'When
resorted to in season it sel
dom fails to effect a, speedy
cure in the most severe
cases of Coughs, Bronchitis,
Croup, "Whooping Cough,
Influenza, Asthma, Colds,
Sore Throat, Pains or Sore
ness in the Chest and Side,
Liver Complaint, Bleeding
at the Lungs, &e. Wistar’s
Balsam does not dry up a
Cough, and leave the cause
behind, as is the case, with
most preparations, but it
loosens and cleanses the
lungs, and allays irritation,
thus removing the cause of
the complaint.
