There scents to be a growing desire
on the part of farmers. s*ys the Farm
Journal, to improve their stock of pig**;
in fact they kave been driven to H by
the narrow margin between the relative
■ aloes of cm au.l pork. W itli cor.i at
fc'xty cents, aud pork at ?G 50 per 100
p. uuds, there is not much clearancefor
pr.;fii in feeding any but the better class
~i pigs In making their selection
among the various breeds many make a
mistake in giving the? preference to a tine
particular breed simply because it ie
large Other tilings being equal a
large nog is the meat profitable, but we
do not find this equality to exist be
tween the different breeds, What we
want is the p g which wiil return us
the largest weight frern a given amount
of food. It may be the case that t is
great desideratum may he found among
the so-called small breeds, nnd my own
experience leads me to believe that it
will bo foui.d there.
We need a pig easy kept, small in
the bone, disposed more to fledi than
mere fat, quiet in disposition, short in
body, and not too much given to the
production cf flith ; in faot, we need a
hog “a'l ham and. shoulders ” The
decision seems to be confined to selec
tion between the*Chcste’f Whites and
the two “ Black breeds” of Berkshire
and Essex. The fault usually found
with the pure bloods of the two black
breeds seems to be that they are too
small. While I admit their light weight
yet I am of the opinion that they will
make more pork from a bushel of corn
than white ones. They will also be
found to possess other advantages which
will strongly recommend them to the
farmer who produces pork for his fami
ly use. and not the least of these is that
they inolino more to flesh than fat, aud
on ordinary food will bo ready to kill at
cny or all times. It is very possible
that we will reach our ultimatum in a
cross between the two breeds, whereby
the size shall be equalized and the good
qualities combined. For my own use
for family pork, I have settled down on
half blood Chester Whites by a Berk
shire boar ; such pigs have given the
most satisfactory results of any we have
fed, consuming less food, being more
quiet, and producing less fat than their
larger wbito brethren,
Absorb [Advice.
A paper which 1 sometimes read, tells
an inquirer for the hest preventive of
‘* bitter-rot” in fruit, to “ bore an inch
auger-hole into the heart of the tree,
put in a few pinches of flour of sul
phur and then plug it up.” In old
times farmers used to sow their clover
seed in the “ up sign” to make the roots
forked, and their parsneps in the “down
sign” to make them straignt. But for
tho credit of our agricultural press, do
let us bury forever these remnants of
witchcraft days. If the writer aforc,-
said had made himself acquainted with
the laws of vegetable growth, he would
have known, that placing sulphur in
the heart of a tree, is about on a par
with inserting it in tho bottom of a
hole drilled in a rock for the purpose
of killing the lichens that grow on its
surface. The heart wood has perform
ed its duty and is resting from its la
bors, being merely a component portion
of the structure, useful only to make it
firm and steady. The circulation of
the fluids as well a* the lew growth
takes place immediately between the
bark and upou the old wood, so that any
application of foreign substance to bo
disseminated throughout the outer sur
face, must be placed here. lam among
those who firmly believe that that di
sease is of fungoid origin,—iu fact
there is little doubt about it; but rem
edies inserted into the heart of the
trunk will not cure the malady [on the
extremities of the branches, notwith
standing the fact that sulphur in a vo
latile state is one of the most destruct
ivc agents upon fungi of all kinds, —

Tho Crop-Reports of Agricultural Bu
reau.
The department of agriculture has
received very full information concern
ing the appearance of wheat through
out the country. The returns cover a
large proportion of winter wheat in each
State. The winter ha* been extremely
favorable in all sections, no previous
one being more generally so since the
inauguration of crop reports. In the
South very few exceptions to the gen
eral vigor and luxuriance of the growth
have appeared. In the gulf coast re
gion winter pasturing of wheat fields
have been reported to the advantage of
the crop. In New York and Pennsyl
vania tho weather since the middle of
March has been unfavorable on account
of sudden changes of temperature and
cold winds to the injury of wheat on
clay and undrained lands. In Ontario,
Niagara, Livingston and Geaesee, four
counties which produc*me- third of the
winter wheat of New York, average ex
pectations are entertained, though some
injury from freezing and thawing on
low ground is reported. The promise
is remarkable in Pennsylvania, nine'
tenths of the counties making favorable
returns, many of them very flattering.
Fully three-fourths of the counties in
the Ohio valley report either an aver
age or superior condition. Beyond the
Mississippi, Missouri and Kansas have
still fewer unpromising reprepreseuta
tions. There are reports from the north
west which are more favorable than
usual. The prospect in California is
very promising, though complaints of
injury from an unusual cause, wet
weather, come from several counties
The Secretary of the State Board of
Agriculture reports a promise of forty
million bushels in the State.
Nearly fifty car-loads of oysters
have just been taken across to Califor
nia f>r planting in Pacific eoast waters.

Dr. J. Walker’s California
ViitOffar Bitturs are a purely Veg
etable preparation, made chiefly from
the native herbs found on the lower
ranges of the Sierra Nevada moun
tains of California, the medicinal
properties of which aro extract 1
thtiiefrom without the use of Alcohol.
The question is almost daily asked,
il What is tlio cause of the unpar
alleled success of Vinegar Bit
ters ?” Our answer is, that thov
remove tho cause of disease, and
the patient recovers his health. They
are the great blood purifier and a
life-giving principle, a perfect Reno
vator and Invigorator of the system.
Never before in tho history of the* world
has a medicine been compounded pos
sessing the remarkable qualities of Vis
egar Bitters in healing the sick of
every disease man is heir to. They aro
a gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic,
relieving Congestion or Inflammation of
the Liver and Visceral Organs, in Bilious
Diseases
The properties of Dr. Wai.k-
BB’s Vinegar Bitters are Aperient. Dia
phoretic, Carminative, Nutritious, Laxa
tive, Diuretic, Sedative. Counter-Irritant,
Sudorific, Alterative, and Anti-Bilious.
(araieful Thousands proclaim
Vinegar Hitters the most wonder
ful Invigorant that ever sustained
the sinking system.
No Person can take these Rit
ters according to directions, and re
main long unwell, provided their
bones arc not destroyed by mineral
poison or other means, aud vital or
gans wasted beyond repair.
Bilious, Remittent, and In
ienniitent Fevers, which are so
prevalent in the valleys of our great
rivers throughout tho United States,
especially those of the Mississippi,
Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee,
Cumberland, Arkansas, Red, Colo
rado, Brazos. Rio Grande, Pearl,
Alabama, Mobile, .Savannah, Ro
anoke, James, and many others,
with their vast tributaries, through
out our entire country during tho
Summer and Autumn, and remarka
bly so during seasons of unusual
beat and dryness, are invariably ac
companied by extensive derange
ments of the stomach and liver, and
other abdominal viscera. In their
treatment, a purgative, exerting a
powerful iuilueneo upon these vari
ous organs, Is essentially necessary.
There is no cathartic for the purpose
equal to Dr. J. Walker’s Vinegar
Bitters, ns they will speedily removo
the dark-colored viscid matter with which
the bowels are loaded, at tho same time
stimulating tho secretions of the liver,
and generally restoring the healthy func
tions of the digestive organs.
Fortify the body against dis
ease by purifying ail its fluids witi
Vinegar Bitters. No epidemic cai i
take bold of a system thus tore-armed. '
Dyspepsia or Indigos!ion, Head
ache, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs,
Tightness of the Chest, Dizzino-’s, Soui
Eructations of the Stomach, Bad Tasto
in the Mouth, Bilious Attacks, Palpita
tion of the Heart, Inflammation of the
Lungs, Pain in the region of die Kidneys
and a hundred other painful symptom!
are the offsprings of Dyspepsia. One bol

eases are caused by Vitiated Blood.
Mechanical Diseases.—Persons
engaged in Paints and Minerals, such as

Pin, Tape, and other Worms,
lurking in the system of so many thou
sands, are effectually destroyed and re
moved. No system of medicine, no ver
mifuges, no authelminilics will free the
system from worms like- these Bitters.
For Female Complaints, iu young
or old, married or single, at the dawn of
womanhood, orthe turn of life, these Ton
ic Bitters display so decided an influence
that improvement is soon perceptible. i
Cleanse the Vitiated Blood
whenever you find its impurities bursting
through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions,
or .Sores j cleanse it when you find it ob
structed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse
it when it is foul; your feelings will teß
you when. Keep the Hood pure, and it/
health of the system will follow.
