liaising Turnips.
Editors Southern Cultivator; A t>
you ask for the experience of all far
mers who have learned anything tnat
will be of benefit to their fellow far
mers, 1 have concluded to fcive you my
plan of raising turnips. Mike, when I
can get it. a good piece of enupenned
land*; but in the absence of such a
piece of land, 1 take any convenient
piece that I have, and break it up with
a two horse plow, as deep as I can, in
July, and then cross break in August,
just before the full of the moon, and
then harrow it to pulverize the clods,
and smooth the land ready for plant
ing. I then take several varieties.—
My last crop was Flat Dutch, Red Top,
Norfolk Whites, Globe, Rutabaga, and
add about as many collard seed us Ru
tabagas, and about twice as many as of
either other variety. The three first
varieties, Flat Dutch, Red lop and
Globes, make early, and are used up be
fore the other attain much size, and the
other turnips come off bel .e the col
lards occupy much of the lurch I mix
the seed all together and mix with gu
ano—(l used the Wilcox, Gibbs &
Go’s manipulated) as many seed as I
wish for an acre with four hundred
pounds guano —and plant with a Dow
Raw Cotton Planter, with the opening
coulter off, as the wheel will open as
much trench as is necessary for tur
nips. I lay off the land with the plan
ter, regulating the machine so as to go
over an acre with four hundred pounds
of guano, with the rows about thirty
inches apart When up and of such
size as to warrant a good stand, chop
out as for cotton, or pul' out so as to
leave some of each variety at such
distance as will warrant a good crop
of each, and as the earlier attains
good size, I pull out and use or feed
my stock. If the grass appears I use
a cotton sweep between the drills.—
After all the other crops are gone 1
have a fine crop of collurds fer early
spring use.
I have followed this plan for several
years, and have never failed to make
a good crop. If I fail of ft good stand,
which doesn’t occur often, I plough up
and sow in like manner in September or
October. I had a fine ciop last season,
from'sowing late in October. I much
prefer making three sowings of my
crop, so as to have good fresh turnips
all the season. I feed hogs and cattle
with them all winter, and have the col
lards for spring marketing and feed
ing. I have never attempted to put
away in banks like potatoes in this cli
mate as our winters do not require it;
but in Northern Georgia I have done
so with perfect success, twenty years

Hastening the Ripening op
Fruit. —Acting upon the principle that
renewal of the earth immediately sur
rounding the roots increases their ac
tivity, and accelerates the maturing of
all parts of the plant, including the
fruit, Mr. Stall removed the earth about
an early pear tree, eight weeks before
the normal period ol ripening, for a
space of thirteen to fifteen feet in diam
eter, and to such an extent as to leave
a depth of earth over the roots of only
about two to twenty-four inches, which
could be thoroughly warmed by the sun
lie was surprised, not only by the ri
pening of the fruit in tue middle ol
July, but also by its superior juiciness
and flavor. In another experiment, the
rem >val of the earth from the north
side of a tree alone, caused the fruit on
that side to ripen several days earlier
than that on the south side. Frequent
watering was of course necessary in
the above experiments. — Vineyard Ga

Small Stones in the Mowing —lt
is an excellent practice to go over the
mowing fields just after haying and pick
up and carry off the loose, small stones,
which may have been started up by the
tedder or horse-rake. A few hours time
spent in this way, some cloudy day will
afford the satisfaction of knowing that
there will be nothing in the way of the
mowing machine knives when a second
crop of rowen is ready to cut, or when
the machine cou.es around next year.
Resides it may save expensive breaka
ges and serious delays while the dupli
cate parts are being sent from a long dis
tance. Mowing machines always seem
to break just when they are most want
ed.
Small fast stones that are too small to
be seen in thick grass, may often be
knocked out of the way or have the top
broken off by a heavy sledge hammer.
It will pay to try it.
A Boston artist, who excels as an
animal painter, saw as he was passing
through one of the rural towns of Mas
sachusetts a very antimated looking
bull Thinking he would like to take
him on canvas he got permision of the
owner, an honest old iarmer, and in due
time produced an excellent likeness of
the bull, which he sold for 8200. On
seeing the farmer soon after, be told
him he had sold the picture of his bull
for 8200. “ Good gracious !” said the
oli man ; “why, I would have sold the
bull for less than that I"

At a recent sale of very large, pow
erful cart horses in Liverpool, prices
ranged from 8244 to 8500. Forty four
bead averaged $440. The animals
were mostly five and six years old, only
a few seven. The whole lot was repre
sented to be in fine order and of great
size, averaging seventeen hands in
height and probably 2..000 pounds in
weight.

BAD BLOOD.
“A corrupt tree,” saith the Inspired Vol
ume, “ bringeth forth not good fruit,” nrr
can corrupt blood impart health, beauty and
good flesh, or spirits. “ The blood is the
l ife, ’ and health can only b) enjoyed in its
full perfection where the blood is kept in a
pure and uncorrupted state, hence the ne
cessity of pure blood, to give health, beau
ty, buoyant spirits, long life and happiness.
AN IMPURE CONDITION OF THE BLOOD,
manifests itself in different forms of dis
eases, such as Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald-
Head, Ring-Worms, Pimples Blotches,Spots,
Eruptions, Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Sore
Eves, Rough Skin, Scurf, Scrofulous Sores
End Swellings, Fever sores, white swellings,
tumors, old seres or swellings, syphilitic
affections of the skin, throat and bones, ul
cers of the livers, stomach, kidneys, lungs
and uterus.
In this condition of things something is
needed at once to cleanse the blood, and
neutralize the insidious poison that
BURNS LIKE A TERRIBLE FIRE
as it courses through the veins, sowing seeds
of death with every pulsation.
Dr. Pemberton’s Compound Extract of
Stillingia, (or Queen’s Delight) will positive
ly effect this desideatum, expelling every
trace of disease from the blood and system,
and leaving the skin
SOFT, FAIR AND BEAUTIFUL.
For all disease of the blood, liver and
kidneys, this great vegetable alterative is
without a rival. It will cure any chronic or
long standing disease, whose real or direct
cause is bad blood. Rheumatism, pains in
imbs or bones, constitutions broken down
by mercurial or other poisons, are all cured
by it. For syphilis, or syphilictic taint, there
is nothing equal to it. A trial will prove it.
It is a most useful spring and fall purifier of
the blood.
Its safety and innocence have been fully
tested, so that it may be administered to the
most tender infant.
