There are pome cheering; signs for the agriculturist of Georgia The papers from every part of the State, and private letters, indicate that the cotton mania is subsiding, and planters have concluded hereafter to till the earth by the light of experience and common sense. >\ e • t one lime, feared that they were ini'* pervious to the truth, but the sherili •nd starvation have at last driven them into the paths of wisdom. The Grangers have also contributed nvoch toward this result, and all honor is due them for their patriotic agency in bringing it about. 1 hey have preach ed until it has at last come to be heed" «and, the grand economic maxim that no agricultural people ever yet prospered who failed to raise their own Food Re ports generally represent that two acres of corn and one of cotton is the rule for our planters for 1874. They will find it to work well, and only have to stick to it to work out complete redemption When Georgia comes to produce her own bread and meat, she will be the r'ch est State in the Union. To say nothing of other articles of export, only think of her keeping at home annually the many millions brought into the State by the cotton crop ! What would this money not do for her? Instead of being a comuni ty of debtors, nearly everybody would be owing us, while that portion of surplus invested at home would cause the old State to blossom like a rose, and her people to be among the most indepen dent of earth. — Georgia Grange. Lice on Cattle. The North British Agriculturist, in an article on vermin on cattle, gives some suggestions as to how to treat the pests. It would take time by the fore top, and on the slightest indication of their presence, make a prompt examina tion, and if lice are detected apply a remedy. It is senseless, it says, to wait until the unfortunate wretch has re** moved the hair from his own skin and spread his tormentors among his fellows. The pediculi or lice, of which almost ev ery animal has its own peculiar species, are not hard to kill A good scrubbing with soft soap and water will remove them. Linseed, or any other oil, pie vents their migrating, and destroys them ; but the efficacy of the oil is in creased when to every pint is added an ounce of impure carbelic acid, or of Bur nett’s zink chloride solution. Decoc tions of tobacco and stavesacre also pois on the vermin, an ounce to the pint of water being generally used. Where the animal having been much infested a sec ond dressing should take place about a week after the first, and brushing clean liness. and usually a more liberal die try also enjoyed. — Manure. Josiah Shull, in an address before the Central New York Farmers’ Club, re lates the following experiment in the application of green and rotten manure : I have used excrement matter in the spring of the year, spread and plowed under and cultivated, and well incorpo rated with the soil, and planted the land with potatoes. The potatoes did finely were well formed and fine for the table. At the same time, and on the same piece of land, plowed under well rotted ma nure, with the same cultivation, and the potatoes were over-grown, ill-shaped and soggy, not fit for the market or the ta ble. My theory in the case of the dif ference in the quality crop was the manure being well composted the action on the plants was so vigorous as to cause the tubers to grow very rapid y, consequently they were soggy and n>t fit for the table. Whereas, on the part planted with the raw material the de composition was just rapid enough and at the right time. Traveling on the Farm. — Did any of your readers ever think of the amount of travel it takes to raise a crop of corn ? I never saw an illustration in print, and I thought I would give you one. I have a twenty acre field, forty by eighty rods. To break this up would take one hundred and sixty-six miles ; harrowing it, about forty miles; furrowing out, ninety miles ; planting, forty-five miles, if with a planter, and if dropped and then covered, ninety miles ; and for eanh plowing of two furrows in a row, ninety miels, or five plowings, four hundred aud fifty miles. Thus you will see it takes about eight or nine hundred miles of travel to raise twenty acres of corn, not counting going to and return ing from the field. Besides, there is re planting, thinning, rolling, etc. — Ex change. Long Furrows in Plowing.— A German agricultural paper prints a plea for long furrows. The turning of the plow and the commencing of anew far row requires more exertion in the plow man and team than continued work on a strait line, and how gieat may really be the loss of time from frequent interruptions in short turns may be shown by the following calculations: In a field 255 feet ’on", five and a half hours are used in redi. rdeting the plow; with a length of 575 felet, four hours are sufficient for the pur. pose; and when the plow can proceed without interruption for 800 feet, only one and a half hours of the daily work ing time arc consumed. —Rural South erner. Sawdust “ thoroughly rooted,” is an excellent mulch around trees, as it forms n bed for the growth of fungi, which arc said upon good authority to injure the trees. If the sawdust is considera* bly decomposed, it might be a bet ter use for it to compost it with lime and use it as a fertilizer.— Rochester Democrat. A doctor’s motto is supposed to be : Patients aud long suffering. fs IMMONSI [rjegu latorl Nearly all diseases originate from Indi gestion and Torpidity of the Liver, and re lief is always anxiously sought after. ' auMscrnGHi^ l 15 A1) BLOOD. “A corrupt tree,” saith the Inspired Vol ume, “ bringeth forth not good fruit,” ncr can corrupt blood impart health, beauty and good flesh, or spirits. “ The blood is the Life,” and health can only be enjoyed in its lull perfection where the blood is kept in a pure and uncorrupted state, hence the ne cessity of pure blood, to give health, beau ty, buoyant spirits, long life and happiness. AN IMPURE CONDITION OF THE BLOOD, manifests itself in different forms of dis eases, such as Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald- Head, Ring-Worms, Pimoles Blotches,Spots, Eruptions, Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Sore Eves, Rough Skin, Scurf, Scrofulons Sores End Swellings, Fever sores, white swellings, tumors, old sores or swellings, syphilitic affections of the skin, throat and bones, ul cers of the livers, stomach, kidneys, lungs and uterus. In this condition of things something is needed at once to cleanse the blood, and neutralize the insidious ] oison that BURNS LIKE A TERRIBLE FIRE as it courses through the veins, sowing seeds of death with every pulsation. Dr. Pemberton's Compound Extract of Stillingia, (or Queen’s Delight) will positive ly effect this desideatum, expelling every trace of disease from the blood and system, and leaving the skin SOFT, FAIR AND BEAUTIFUL. For all disease of the blood, liver and kidneys, this great vegetable alterative is without a rival. It will cure any chronic or long standing disease, whose real or direct cause is bad blood. Rheumatism, pains in irabs or bones, constitutions broken down by mercurial or other poisons, are all cured by it. For syphilis, or syphilictic taint, there is nothing equal to it. A trial will prove it. It is a most useful spring and fall purifier of the blood. Its safety and innocence have been fully tested, so that it may be administered to the most tender infant.
