Ite Calhoun limes,
'local news.
A rather SY.eet affair—that candy
pulling-
Matrimonial market inactive with
a downward tendency.
(Gainesville has twenty lawyers.—
Calhoun can boast of fourteen.
An infant child of Mr. and Mrs.
J. M. Ballew died Friday night last.
The Calhoun young people are de
lighted at the addition to their social
circles during the holidays of several at
tractive young ladies who have just re
turned from Dalton college.
New Ad ve rtiseme nts .—V eal,
Rome’s live jewelcyj, of course does a big
business, the natural effect of keeping a
good stock, and letting people know it
through the papers. See his new adver
tisment.
\Ve are the recipient of a piece
wedding cake for which we tender our
acknowledgements to Mr. John R.
House and Miss. Lizzie Williams, of
Hockey Creek, this county, who were
United on the 2Gth of November. May
their wedded life be a happy one.
The old Calhoun Hotel property was
sold at auction yesterday. Col. Joe
McConnell is the purchaser, it having
been knocked off to him at two thousand
and thirty five dollars, and ho infurms
us he intends to renovate and improve
it until it shall be an ornament to the
place, and well kept it will prove one of
the best houses in North Georgia.
Personal. —Dr. King—we
I)r. Chas. King, late of this place, but
more recently of Atlanta where he is ma
turing a profession—with hair parted in
the middle, curled mustache, and beaver
hat gracefully poised upon bis left ear,
pranced into our sanctum last Monday
and gave us a hearty shake of the hand.
We are always glad to meet old friends.
We will ask our readers this week to
overlook the falling off in the amount
of ’original matter, our main stake
in the typographical department hav
ing been ejected from the office on a ci
gar box-lid, the result of having taken
Oft too great a cargo of “ corn ”
and we have had to try the stick and
'rule in his stead.
Burglary, —on last Saturday night
a trunk full of samples was taken lrom
the hallway of the Calhoun Hotel, broken
cfpen and left on the railroad track, and
about seventy-five dollars worth of goods
stolen therefrom, as yet the thief has not
been found out but several negroes have
been arrested on suspicion and discharg
ed for wanUof proof. The trunk was
the property of a Mr. Adkins, travel
t'ftg/or a Baltimore house.
M. Rosenberg & Bro., who adver
tise in this issue, are prepared to meet
the wants of all visiting Rome in the
way of dry goods, clothing, notions, <fcc.
Their stock always comprises fresh
goods well selected. Mr. D. H. Find
ley, late of this place, and so well known
to the neople of Gordon county, is with
the above*house, and will take pleasure
in waiting on any of his old friends who
give him a call.
Millinery. —ln this issue appears
the advertisement of Mrs. Mills, Millin
er, Rome, Ga. From a partial exami
nation of her stock and specimens of
her work, we a r e thoroughly convinced
shat her establishment is one at which
the ladies can always find whal will
please them. We were shown beauti
ful work in the way of embroidery, &c.
She has only in her employ ladies well
skilled in all classes of miilinery work.
A Genuine old fashioned candy
stew and hop came off at the Calhoun
Hotel last Monday night. The elite
were out in all their gayety, and mirth
reigned 'supreme the entire evening.
There was certainly no cause for a lack
of enjoyment among hot molasses, dan
cing, cards,promenading, social chatting,
etc. As the holidays approach these
little gatherings will be more frequent,
and Calhoun do beat the world when
she gets started.
We take occasion hereby to say to
our friends and the public generally,
without experiencing any uncer
tainty as to the correctness of
our assertion that Mr. J. A. Stansbury.,
of Home, keeps decidedly one of the best
tables in North Georgia, having had the
pleasure of stopping with him during
our visit to Rome last week. With th >
best edibles to be had and clean beds
he can please the most fastidious. Try
him once and know how it is yourself.
Mr. Editor : \j
The Calhoun Debating Society, at its

There seems some probability that Mr.
Charles D. Townsend, the artist, may
within a few years become the Ameri
can Landseer, at least in that depart
ment of art dealing with that second no
blest of animals, the dog. Several fine
examples of his treatment of this noble
subject will be in the recollection of
many of our readers—notably some of
the pictures made for The Aldine, and
at least one bearing the reputation of
being finer than even any thing of the
kind produced by the great Erglish
painters. It is the head of the dog
which 31 r. Townsend seems to have the
exceptional mission to portray —in that
particular assuming the same position,
as comparedjwith ordinary painters of the
dog, that is held by distinguished por
trait painters in contradistinction to
those dealing with the full figure of
man. Perhaps the very finest thing he
has yet done, i'S shown in the chromo,
“Man’s Unselfish Friend,” forming the
annual premium offered by The Al
dine, and now just being supplied to
those entitled to it. The very nobility of
dog-hood is shown in this fine head and
bust, those of a Newfoundland, with per
haps a shade of softening cross with the
great St. Bernard, affording a subject
quite as capable of being loved as of
loving. How grand is the whole pose !
how more than human are those eyes,
full of a fixed and loving attention ! how
perfect is the silken gloss of that muz
zle, with the clear nostrils, the tip of the
soft red tongue, and the mere hint of
the strong teeth that could tear as well
as defend, beneath it. How gracefully
fall those fine velvet eats 1 how thought
fully corrugates the noble brow that
might be thinkingouta problem instead
of merely waiting the welcome com
mands of a master. How tastefully,
and yet how naturally, is the neck en
circled by that creamy, curled fleece,
from which the head rises as proudly
yet unconsciously as the daintiest lady’s
from her ruff! How perfect, in short,
are the details of this admirable picture,
the mere possession of which, in any
house, will be quite equal in effect to a
long sermon by the most renowned pro
fessor, against cruelty to animals, and
much more lasting than one of the ex
postulations of Mr. Bergh. The Al
dine does well, both for its own pros
perity and the good of its patrons, in ex
ecuting and offering so exceptionally ex
cellent a chromo to the patrons of its se
ries for 1875 ; and as we have already
remarked, Mr. Townsend, the artist, in
it makes rapid strides toward the head
of living artists in that class of delinea
tion.
It is understood that the original rf
this flue picture will be one of many
fine paintings held for distribution,
through the new Art Union, to all sub
scribers for The Aldine.
The subscription price is $6.00, which
includes Tiie Aldine, one year, this
.chromo, and one share in the Art Union
distribution.
Good Pictures. —Mr. Murphy,
Shorter Block, Rome, has a splendid gal
lery, and takes some of the finest pic
tures we have lately seen. When in
Rome don’t fail to visit his gallery. We
have tred his pictures and know they
are good.
