The advent of cold weather has
Caused a falling oil' in the attendance at
our Sunday schools of nearly twenty
five per cent. As both our churches
have been rendered comfortable, even in
the most, disagreeable weather, we can
see but little excuse for those who
should be interested in our Sabbath
schools Siayiug away.
The members of the Presbyterian
Church met < n Tuesday evening, the
12th, for the purpose of taking steps to
ward the erection of a Presbyterian
house of worship. The appointment of
a committee to take subscriptions was
left to the pastor, INIr. Ilillhouse, and
wc have no doubt the effort will prove
successful in a reasonable time. TheEpis
conalu are thinking of putting on
foot a similar imwe before a great while.
Some Pumpkin. —Mr. 11. A. Dorsey
has shown us a pumpkin which is a little
ahead of anything in the line we have
ever seen. It was presented to him by
Mr. John Long, and was raised on Mr.
Dobbins’ farm, on the river. This mon
ster pumpkin weighs seventy-five
pounds, and is five feet in circumference,
and would not begin to go into a bushel
basket. Mr. Dorsey sent it to the State
Fair yesterday for the premium offered
the largest on exhibition.
One Dunpred and Eighteen
Years Old. —Jennie, a negro woman
who has for a long time lived in the
family of M rs. Ma one, of Sugar Valley,
died on the 23d of last month at the
remarkable old age of one hundred and
eighteen. She possessed a very vivid
mind up to the time of her death, and
and could recall aud relate many inci
dents as far back as the declaration of
independence, and even says she can re
member things about the revolutionary
war. She has been known for many
years by the very oldest citizens of the
neighborhood, and none of them re
member any one who has lived to the
•igw she reached.
L>st Sunday we attended the quar
terly meeting held at Poplar Springs
Meth<\ list Church near Adairsville. The
church was crowded to its utmost, and
Rev D. J Myrick.the Presiding Elder
preached ono of his most able sermons,
which was listened to with much inter
est. In the afternoon we stopped in the
village, where we were pleased to find a
fine union Sabbath school, of which
Mr. [lodge is Superintendent. Having
dined with Mr. Martin, of the Adairs
ville hotel, we can safely recommend
house •) those who desire a stopping
place where they will be entertained
with old Virginia hospitality, and with
the best fare to be found on the W. &
A. Railroad,
Pumpkin.’’ — A day or two since
one of our young men who has just pass
ed the first twelve months' experience
at housekeeping, with the courtesy of
one who appreciates his friends, gave us
an invatition to dine with him, stating
that the feast was an occasion for the
benefit of a young attorney who was
fond of pumpkin At the appointed
hour we with other invited friends ap
peared at his cosy domicile, and on
reaching the table which we were not
long about, and surv ying it, found it
to contain pumpkin from one end to the
other, and nothing else. There was
pumpkin s.ewed, pumpkin fried, pump
kin sliced up raw, pumpkin bread and
pumpkin custard; and as the guests
took in the situation at a glance, decided
to make the best of it; and to end this
pumpkin story, this array of pumpkin
was shortly removed from the table on
ly to make room for a repast of every
good thing to be thought of to tempt
the appetite, but the aforementioned at
torney who had become the victim of
“pumpkin” could not be induced to
partake of anything else. The agreea
ble host and hostess were Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Wyatt. May their little house,
hold be a place where peace and plenty
ever dwell.
The Atlanta Convocation of the Prot

The Verdict. — A jury is supposed
to represent fairly the general intelli
gence of the community from which it
is taken. The guilt or innocence of a
party, the value or worthlessness of an ar
ticle is established by its verdict. A
verdict has been rend red by a jury
Ci uiposed of the best men taken from
every country on the globe ; the evi*
de ice v as clear and impartial and thou
san Is of witnesses gave their testimony.
The trial was a long one, occupying ten
years, and the jury have at last brought
in a verdict which was, “That Dr. Tutt’s
Pills possesses more power over disease
than any medicine invented since the
foundation of the world.” It is pro
nounced by all a righteous verdict

Dr. J. O. Danforth :
Dear Sir —After carefully exam
ining the formula by which it is made,
and using two bottles of your Sanative
Dentifrice, I take great pleasure in re
commending its use to my patients and
to all others who may wish to keep
their teeth and gums in a pure anti
healthy condition. The formula, l can
testify, contains nothing but what is
conducive to the health and cleanliness of
the mouth. I find it to be also very ef
ficient for cleansing artificial teeth and
preventing the accumulation of oily
and earthy deposits upon the plate. It
is indeed an elegant combinatior of pure
Castile Soap with other cleansing and
preserving ingredients delicately flavor
ed. Very Respectfully,
