SAVANNAH. GA., JUNE 13,1894.
FOR GOVERNOR:
W. Y. ATKINSON
OF COWETA COUNTY.
The influence of federal office-holders
should not be felt in the manipulation ol politi
cal primary meetings and nominating conven
tions.
Gkovkr Cu.vii.aki>,
passing <>i th i: tigi:b.
The people have met Tamilian}' and taught
the oath-bound ring a lesson that il will
never forget.
Last night's meetings were the hist real
contest between Tammany anti those op
posed to the corrupt principles and scheme'
hatched behind closed doors and guarded by
Hecrecy, and Tin DAILY Disi'atui congratu
lates th>‘ respectable citiz-n ■■ on their repudia
tion of an organization that has disgraced the
politics of Savannah lor the last two years.
The tactics adopted by the Tammanyites in
boiling from the meetings of the First, Second
and Fourth districts because they were ovei
wbclmingly in the minority, is in keeping
with the men who lead tin- secret gang
ll’is patent Io every conservative citizen,
however, that in each of these meetings tile
opposition to Tammany h.nl a clear majority,
and the ticket selected by il will compose the
new executive committee of the pally.
Let Tammany howl as it may, let it claim
everything on earth, let it keep up coinage
with beer and sandwiches, for il needs these
things to make its rapidly approaching death
as peaceful as possible.
’I he people are triumphant, the tiger is
dying, Savannah is s.rvel from Tweedism.
i in: rooi. snot i.o bi: bkoki:\.
Savannah and Cliarlesh n have il in their
pov.ei to put an cud to the confessed discrim.
uulion against them by the Southern Steam
ship and Railway Association.
The confession is made that this disci imina
tion is possible because the loads terminating
at Virginia ports have not been getting as
much freight as the roads terminating at Sa
vannah and Charleston, and that under an
agicement the northern roads must have the
deficit made up before the South Atlantic
p its can have their own i.i other words the
money expended through the enterprise of
South Carolina and Georgia people in the con
struction of railways, and in the development
nt the field, the forest and the mine, the prod
ucts of which are naturally tributary to
their own poits, must be given to Virginia
roads to haul to remote ports until these
roads show that their have bad an "cimJ
share in wlial neither their geow.phica 1
positions nor their enterprise entitles them
To enable Virginia roads, owned in Wall
street, to declare dividends, th- Georg'.; and
' South Carolina roads must give up what is
their own.
This is the so-, ailed pool, .ml t’-’ poo!
must be and should be broken. It is in
violation of the spirit, if not the letter, of the
law. It is unjust to the states that have
granted liberal charters to the railroads of
Georgia arid South Carolina. It is an
outrage upon the ports discriminated against
that they should be forced by such a weak
surrender, to see the cotton, the lumber, tim
ber and phosphates produced at their own
doors hauled hundreds of miles away from
their natural entrepots to the injury of the
latter, and to the damage ol local railroad in
terests in order that the Virginia railroads may
profit by the unjust discrimination
It is time that the discrimination stop. The
railroad properties of G. rrgta and South
Carolina have been juggled with too long
by Wall street and tire parts ol these two
states have been discriminated against
already too long. It ought to stop, and if
tne Southern Steamship and Railway Asso
ciation do not give us relief, then the courts
and state and interstate railroad commissions
should be appealed to to break up a pool,
which is another term for Wall street
manipulation. The South Atlantic ports
must have what belongs to them, and if the
so-called pool stands tn the way of their
rights it must be broken.

■ I The crowd that has disgraced Savannah by

The Morning Unreliable had a representative
iat the First district meeting who was either
instructed to make a false, report of tile meet

f.dselu«>ds th.it he knew were false. It is un
true th:.! the “ l ammany men had adjourned’
the meeting and started oil” before the meet- |

| that “there were not over 500 people in |
