Is there never to be any relief from theloul, ( disease-breeding germs in the open waters of Bilbo canal ? Under the hot suns of a semi tropical summer it is festering and seething with bacteria, and the stench from its pol luted flow is as nauseating as the effluvia that oozes from its banks are deadly. From the Savannah river to the Thunder bolt shell road it is peculiarly loathsome to sight and smell. Why is it that this malaria-breeding sluice is kept open to the detriment of the health ol the people of the east side ? Why is it that its contaminating waters aie not shut off from sight and smell, and the sewage with which it reeks is not conveyed to the point ot discharge like a sewer should ? Cleaning out and throwing its precipitated sewage on the bank with a sprinkling of lime only whitewashes the hideousness under neath and does not arrest the progress of bac terian growth. It is a menace to the public health, for the sewage is both animal and vegetable, and gives off its noxious vapors because it is ex posed to a semi-tropical sun, ami courses along its oneu channel bv th,. vrr* dnnr, <>( the people living inside the corporation line, while every wind from the north, the south and the east carries its germs ol disease into thicky-populated portions of the citv. Why is it that this unsanitary channel of poison is permitted to flow upon the surface when its unsanitary condition has over and over been brought to the attention of the proper authorities? It is tempting Providence to trust summer after summer to our good fortune in escaping an epidemic with this foil' sewer flowing its uncovered sewage, fester ing and rottening where it lodges tn its How, through a habited poition of the city. Is it because it is in a quarter where the poor and humble reside, as a rule, that there has been this indifference to the demand made year after year for the nuisance to be abated? If not, why, we repeat, is it permitted? Think of it! An open sewer more than a mile in length hourly fed from the store houses of filth, mingling in rotten and foul-smelling flow under a semi-tropical sun, lodging on the edge here and being precipitated to the bottom to be cast up on the bank to i ipen the seeds of disease and death, within a stone's throw of a thickly populated portion of the city. It is criminal to permit it, and an uni versal protest should go up against it. We are strict in quarantining against the epidemic from without, and yet nursing a fetid monster from within, whose feverish breath may at any time spread disease and death throughout the city. Bilbo canal is a gaunt skeleton whose bony finger may at any time point the wav to ravage in our fair city. Close ] it up, and forever, before it is too late. NOTHING TO CONTEST FOB. The “contest” was the prearranged trick ' of an organization that knew its own weak ness. It would not measure its strength with the masses that crowded the First district oerwhelmingly outnumbering it. It refused to act with the people of the Second district when it found it was in a hopeless minority. It believed it had a majority in the Third until at a certain point in the count it discovered that it was in the minority, and started a dis graceful row to break up the meeting. It found the opposition in the Fourth largely ex ceeded it, and acted independently, as it had done in the First. Beaten in every city district by refusing to act, Tammany, and its auxiliary that it humil iated, and the better element it disgraced,has no ground tor contest. Any little group of 10 to 100 could, with the same propriety, have had a rump meeting and demanded that the com mittee it elected should be seated. What Tammany got last Tuesday night it got in the neck from the people who repudiated it. Richmond county (Augusta) democrats, of the Evans stripe met to nominate their county ticket and a resolution indorsing the Cleveland administration was voted down in short order. If Mr. Atkinson is nominated the Hines party expect to get the Richmond j “sorehead” vote. As Mr. Atkinson will get i the nomination without it, so he can be elected without it. If Charleston is keenly alive to its commer cial interests it will not be content with pass ing resolutions, but it will take steps to over throw the pool that is cutting off her cotton receipts. The discrimination in favor of Vir ginia ports is affecting our neighbor to a much greater extent than Savannah is being affected, and the necessity of effective action is urgent Savannah’s commercial bodies are ready to join in any step necessary to correct the abuse. There is no reason why the ports of South Carolina and Georgia should be robbed of a trade they are entitled to to put money into the pockets »l Wall street sharks. The pool is a violation of the laws governing interstate com merce .♦ecause of the injustice of the differ entials as now fixed hy the association, and they ought to be restoicd or the pool broken. The Richmond and Danville wreckers of southern railway properties ought to look to their own territory for business and not at tempt to wrench it from others by a pool that we believe would not be permitted to stand if it had to run the gauntlet of the law. Atkinson is winning in a walk. It is now time for Gen. Evans to retire. Bibb will soon be followed by Chatham for Atkinson. The democracy was engaged yesterday in Macon a Bibb lor the “infant” that the old war-horse Evans was to scoop. Tammany is against the working people of Savannah. Its members cheer the Morning Unreliable as their organ, and it is the bitterest foe of the workingmen. Tammany has insulted the Railway Protect ive Association, and any member of that body who votes for a Tammanyite will be recreant to his own interests. The Tammany confreres yesterday refused to recognize the Railway Association as part of the Democratic party of Chatham county. Tin Morning Unreliable has kept well in the traces. Thus far it has not corrected any of the many falsehoods in its local columns. Its false statement about Judge Falligant’s al leged expression of the relative strength of Tammany in Troup square has not yet been corrected as far as we have seen. Was the copv for that false charge edited by I. I. Mc uonougn, ms son-in-law and others? President purse of the board of trade says that the Charleston visitors here this week returned home impressed with the necessity of taking steps to have quarantine tees abolished at their port. Our neighbor must hurry up if she wants to beat Savan nah in the good work, for it is confidently expected that the city council of Savannah will take action at its next meeting to make the port of Savannah free to the ships of all nations. Count Mitkiewikz has taken his third wife, the daughter of a wealthy Maryland farmer. The notoiiety of this adventurer is such that at first glance it would hardly seem possible for a self-respecting American girl to give her hand to him in marriage, but the title of count is too much of a temptation, it seems, and American girls will continue to buy the title of countess in spite of the sad experience of those who have tried it to their sorrow. h- the paity in Chatham county is divided, the division is such that it will not injure it. The true democracy—those who believe the majority should rule are in the majority, and they do not propose that the bolters shall win at coming elections by utilizing that class whose votes are in the market and who have been registered by the enemies of fair elec tions with a view of purchasing their votes.
