We have them al ALL '•'•.IGES. x o \ i II WAS r jF" 0 DEATH, |gMHL>LE CLEWS A LLTHAT HAW been developed. Investigating the Case- ‘Riiffiors TmiPthe Mother of the Dead Infant Resides in thy Vicinity Where the Body Was Found, and Took or Sent Her Child of Shame to Its Foul Resting Place. Developments io the case of the finding of the body of a child in the sewer at An derson and Barnard streets are coining to light fast, if the opinion of those wh >, it would seem, are in a position to speak are worth anything. The general opinion is that the child, that is reported to have had three teeth, is of white parentage; at any cate that one of its parents or one of those responsible for its birth is a white person This is so generally conceded that there is no room in the face of no evidence to the contrary to doubt the prevalent impression. The entire neighborhood is worked up over the finding of Ute body; in fact there is con siderable feeling against the party or parties who disposed of the child in such a manner. While nobody has any just suspicion as to who the party or parlies are, broad insinu ations have been made, none ot which are tangible enough to permit of that amount of credibility that would ordinarily lead to an in vestigation in a particular direction. MR JtllllliT’S St AR 11 ING STORY. To .1 Daily Disl’a ich man who sought out Mr. Iluelet, who was cleaning out the <ewcr when the body was discovered, the tollowing Mtwy was told: "I had only been in the sewer a lew min utes when I struck a pile of rocks. This puzzled me, as it was something unusual to lind such a lot of them in a sewer. After moving a number of them I put my hand on something so very slippery, which smelt so bad that I concluded rl was something else than diit or trash. Picking it up and placing it in the bucket I sent it up, telling the man übove to lay it aside until 1 finished, as I be lieved it was a baby. When we fust looked .it it both ot us agreed that it was a baby, as the formation ot Hie thing was that ol .: human being. WAS IT HANGED? •'ll was wrapped in two cloths. The out side piece was of black and gray material (evidently a rag liom and old dress) and the piece next to lite body of while, maybe linen. There was a piece of cord tied around the neck. The end was wrapped around the body, .and I believe it was used to let the body down into the sewer. "I think the child had been killed before it was i.iought to the sewer, but (earing that it was not, alter letting tire body down, threw the rocks into the sewer to kill it. I did not notice that the child had any teeth, t'«r< feel -me that it was a white child.” MAY LEAD TO SOMETHING. There were 117 rocks, varying in size from that of a hand to a man's head, taken out of the sewer. This is from actual count, and the rocks, which ate of the kind used Io pave crossings, can lie seen near the sewer yet. Any one of them would have killed iiv child if thrown upon it. Yesterday afternoon a Daily Dispatch man, who went out to the sewer in company with an office) of the law, gleaned whal seems to be a valuable piece of information, which, if true, may lead to the detection of the party parties who disposed ol the child. A wo man living in the vicinity is reported to have become the mother of an illegitimate child some'time ago, and it is supposed that sits disposed of it. >'his may or may not be true; at anv rate the matter Is being diligently niceytigated and no stone will be left unturned to britig the guilty party to justice. If anyone will present some tangible evidence against the iparty or parties, as the case may be, The Daily Dispatch will follow the clew indus triously to bring the murderers to justice. Gilmore Wster-s Bound Over to the I'll) Court For furring Owen Martin. Gilmore Waters was up before the recorder this morning for cutting Owen Martin in the hand with a knife. Gilmore says that he had taken a dinner to .one of the men at the New street warehouse arid was returning when Owen came up and asked him for something to eat Gilmore toid tan he had nothing for him, wlien Owen threw a rock at him. Martin says fie told Owens not to hit him, as he did not want to have any fuss, but Owens kept on following him and started to hit him with another rock.
