From the green fields retire the grazing train, And from his labour hastes the weary swain ; No more their strains the aerial songsters sing, No i*.ora with various sounds the vallics ring, Along the ground extends the , lengthened shades, And scarce a sound the list’ning ear invades ; A pleasing calmness oe’r all na ture reign;, While night descends upon the fading plains ; The winds are hushed, and scarce the gentle p ale On wings etherial fans the silent vale, Scarce curls the polish’d surface of Whicfi “glittm- fair Luna’s silver beams. Does slumber from her eyelids rove ? What is her heart’s impassion’d care > Perhaps, O sylph ! perhaps ’tis love 1 From the Literary Magazine. NATURE OF VIRTUF. The celebrated Jonathan Edwards wrote a profound treadle on tlie nature of true virtue. The following anec dote from Joinviile, the hillo rian, of the last great expedi. tion of the French to Syria and Egypt, beforethat of the pre sent imperator Gallorum, will show that the lame lentiment and duflrine may occur to the molt dillitr.ilar minds and in the molt oppolite situations. Join viile says, “ Friar Yves, of i'rittany, being (killed in the language of the Saracens, was employed as interpreter be tween St. Louis and the am. bafladors from the king of Daroafcus. St. Louis was then in Acre, and the ambalfadors had come there to treat with him. The friar, tn palling be tween the king’s lodging and that of the ambalfadors, was one day encountered in the (treels by a very aged woman having in her right hand a pot of burning coals, and in her lclt a pitcher of water, ‘ Woman,’ laid father Yves, ‘ what ait thou about to do with these live coals in thine hand ?’ 1 lo burn paradile,’ anlwered she. ‘And what with the water? ‘To extinguish the flames ol hell.’ Friar Yves then alLed, how flie could talk so ? Her rep ! y was, ‘ That no perlon may do good in this world, to obtain a reward in paradise ; and that none may refrain from lin, lor fear of the torments of hell; but that we may all do good, out of pure love lo God, our creator Sc Supreme good!’ Friar Yves, astonished at the woman’s wifdoni, palled on without reply.” nri. ihiu 111 Uic blank page of Edwards’ trea tile, and whether we conlider it as a real incident, or meicly as an apologue, and the lalt is moll probable, whether the old woman of Acre or the old wo man joinviile, was the advo cate of this dofctrine, it is a re ntal kable coincidence between the great metaphylician and divine, and a hero of the c.u lades, which were, undertaken for theexprefs purpose of re deeming the fouls of the adven turers from thcpunifhment due to their crimes in a future world. AFFECTATION. From afletlation only can the misfortunes, the calamities ol life, or the imperfections of nature, become lidiculous- Surclv he has a very ill Famed mind who-can look on ugli ness, infirmity, or poverty as ridiculous in them (elves ; nor do I believe any person living, who meets a duty fellow riding through the it reels in a cart is 11 ruck with an idea of the rid iculous from it; but if he fhouid (ee the fame figure de icend iiom his coach and lix, or bolt from ids chair w ith his hat under his arm, he would then begin to laugh, and with ju it ice. In the lame manner were we to enter into a poor lioule, and behold a wretched Emily lhivering with cold, and languilhing with hunger, it would not incline us to laugh ter, at lealt we mult have very diabolical natuies if it could. But fhouid we dlfcover there, a grate, initead of coals, adorn ed with flowers, empty plate or china dishes on the fide, board, or any other affectation of riches and finery, either or< their persons or in their furni ture, we might then, indeed, be excused for ridiculing so fan taflic an appearance. Much less are natural imperfefctions the objefts of derision : but when uglirels aims at the ap. plause of beauty, or Lmencfs endeavours to d.fpiay agility, it is there that these unfortunate circumflances, which at firfl moved our companion, tend only to raise our mirth. “ None are for being what they are in fault, But for not being what they would be thought.” Sheriff’s Sales.
