hope.
If, dark clouds obscure the
s|<v,
And in the air sharp lightnings fly,
Am! thunders rull around.,
While from the clouds the torrents
pour,
And furious windicotitencling roar,
When “ earthquakes rock the
ground.”
When hoarsely marine billows roll
And fill with awe th’ astonish’d
soul,
The tempest ’s lmsuM to rest,
Tiie parting clouds to view ow
pfav
The glorious regent of the dav*,
What transports till the breast!
Thus when the soul ’. oppress’d
with pain,.
Corroding Sorrow holds the rein,
And triumphs in her sway,
If Hop ’s bright rays shine in the
mind,
The sot rowing suff’rers comfort
find,
Despondence f! es away.
Each sad idea disappears,
The stride is mingled with our
tears,
Hope gilds each future scene;
Bids cheering, happier prospects
rise
In view, to cheer the sufferer’s
eves;
She makes his soul senme.
O Hope! in glories bright array’d,
Celestial, ever blooming maid,
Be thon inv constant friend;
II sickness, sorrow, pain and care,
Aik! ever) woe I’m doomed to
bear,
O, still my steps attend.
When terrors cloud life’s varying
day,
And in mv bosom shed dismay,
Do thou mv breast inspire,
To brighter scenes to stretch mv
view,
And with nnweari ‘d steps pursue
The good that I desire.
•- .
When my approaches
near,
Illume mv soul, dispel mv fear,
Bid glorious prospects rise;
Paint to mv view that blissful shore
Whore sorrow can distress no
more,
Nor fiii with tears our eyes.
Where everlasting jov shall reign;
And happiness, ummx’d with pain
Eon v. r fill the soul;
Where storms shall ne’er disturb
the scene,
And universal love shall reign,
White ceaseless ages roll.

TO CLARA.
With thrilling voice and speaking
eve,
1 Mi be your friend,” did Clara
cry •
Heard lr or die! some wistful muse
The inlets of m\ soul nhus* ?
No witching bream did fancy
send,
’ Twas Clara said, “ I ’ii be your
friend.’’
Is thine the generous breast that
knows
What rights the name of Frier and
bestows?
What 1 must ask, and sbc. demand,
That Isolds me by that sacred
band?
Ah! mere than thy o’er cautious
heart
Will e’er to wretch like me im
pat t,
Though nought her tendercst les
sens tt-ai h
Can go beyond thy cue*, or
reach;
Though all I held bv gift divine,
Whene’er tbou will’st to take is
tlsint*.

I-F.MAI E GAP RUM TY,
ACCOUNTED FOR.
An old eaflm-n tradition
fays, that while A?am Sc Eve
were in the happy garden, there
W’s font down to ibem a pre
fenr confining of twelve baskets
filled with chit chat, and that
the baskets being emptied, ihe
| contents were scattered about
j the garden. It happened in
■ the mean time, that Adam, be-
I ing it) a penfivr, iho’tfbl mood,
paid Ids attention to this pre r
: lent than his fair partner did,
so that he gathered only three
I baskets full, while Eve nimbly
j collcfled, and careful’y laid a r
way for her ufc, the other nine.
The natural consequence was,
that the flock of final! talk,
which women have, is, in corn
parifon wi h that of men, as
three to one.
ANE< DOTE.
TIIE celebrated Montes*
quiet:, being one day at the
hottfe of a Jew, who was a rich
banker, found him bulily em
ployed in sharpening a knife,
deflined for performing fome
alt of Jewish discipline. Moir
tefquiett having asked him why
he iharpened his knife with so
much care, he replied, bccaule
Moles had commanded that it
should have no teeth. Mon
tesquieu then bid him continue
his operation, and when the
fcntpulous Jew was latisfied,
the prelident took out a magni
fying glass, and fliewed him a
boundance of large teeth,
where the naked eye could d;l
----cover nothing but a fine edge.
“ Ah, fir,” cried the Lightened
Israelite, it is a real saw; lam
quite unhappy ; I tnuft begin
my labour again.” “ Becafy,’’
replied Montesquieu, “ Sc con
huer your ktule as properly
Iharpened ; lie who made your
laws did not use ipedaclcs.”
