From the Palladium.
“ HE!.IN FOR AYE!”
A PARODY.
There mine to u y cot, the lost
fair one of Holin,
The dew on her robe was heavy
and chill;
For her false one she sigh’d, w hen
at twilight descending
To find a retreat ’neath the wind
beaten hi)!.
Now the black clouds depicted her
in ward commotion,
Now her breast was disturbed,
like the storm driven ocean,
And oft elevated with frantic emo
tion,
She sung in sweet accents, 4 My
11 el in fior aye!”
O, sad is my fate, said the heart
broken stranger,
The wild gnat and wolf to a co
vert can flee;
While Mira exposed to famine
and danger,
A home and protection expects
not to see.
Ah, never again in the green sha
de bowers,
Where I smil’d af his smiles,
shall I spend the sweet hours,
Or cover mv harp with the wild
woven flowers,
And strike the bold numbers of
llclin Jor aye.
YetS^othi,mx birth place, though
sad and forsaken,
In dreams I revisit thy well-wa
tered vale;
But alas! in a tar distant iaod I a
wafen,
And sigh for those friends, who
no Mira can hail.
O stern, erne! fate, wilt thou ne
ver replace me.
In a mans on of bliss, where no
shame awaits me?
Ah, never again will my brothers
embrace me;
One died to avenge me, one
lives to deplore.
Ah, where is my cabin, by yen
waving wild wood?
Dertr sisters and sir*, did you
weep fm it* fall?
And where i9fche mother, who
watch’d o’er mv childhood?
A friend, niad haw .'bereft
me of ail.
Say. sav, my sad soul, long a stran
ger to pleasure,
Sat, wiry did you dout on a fast
fading treasure?
For tears like the rain-drops may
fall without measure,
But virtue uud honor can never
recall.
Yet all its most tender reflections
suppressing,
One dying de-ire, my lone bor
sum shall draw;
Poor Mira, an outcast, bequeaths
thee her blessing;
Repent of thy treach’ry, 0, lie.
/in for ay el
When burl’d and cold, and my
heart’s still from motion,
Ne’er b.’ inv name h-.irit with
out keen emotion;
Let harp-stringing bard*, in
strains of dtvonon,
Sing Helin, be contrrte, Ilelin
Jor aye!
FtiOM Mctastasio.
Men are like ships upon the muin
Expos’d to evary gale;
Each passion is a fatal b'ast,.
That tears away a sail.
Each pleasure is a latent rock,
And life a stormy sen;
But whilst our reason holds the
helm,
We ride from perils free.
Yet oft. a’a-l our pilot sleeps,
Or leaves his place to pride;
And then die vessel drives ashore,
Before the foaming lido.
TIMID LOVE.
Gentle Zephyr, as you fly,
4 if you ki.s my fair one’s car,
w. J
Whisper soft that you ’re a sigh—
But limn whose heart she must
not hear.
Limpid rill, if e’er my love,
Near thy gurgling runnel rove,
Murm.nr that fiom ten's von rise;
But tell her not from whose sad
eyes.
