ON the night cf Friday the 19th inst. a horrid murder was committed in the house of Samu el AT. Mayo, ol this place on the bodv of David Whittemore, a native of .the town of Thompson, countv of Windham Connecti* cut, and who resided some vears in this s'afe, as a trader and mer chant. The zeal 4tta'anxiety ex hibited bv the public officers and citizens in general, on this occa sion, do great honor to their feel ings ; They h ive been extremely active in detecting the authors of this atrocious deed ; anil iortu nate'iv for the cause of justice, seem to have succeeded, ns will appear from the free and volunta ry confession of Win. Love, late of Burk county, one of the actors in this bloody tragedy—on the day after the tnorder had been committed, having 11 -cl and cros sed the river at the Sand Bar, he was close'v pursued, Overtaken and brought back, when he made the following declaration in sub stance before squire 1) Aniignac, justice of the pe ace whose exer tions on the occasion arc highly commendable, and entitled to in® thanks of the com muni tv. “ The Deponent saith, that on Monday the T sdr inst. be came to Samuel Mayors house; and on th r * Wednesday night follow in gat a late hour, when he was returning fiom a card parly and ihe billiard table, to said Mayo’s he saw a light in Whttfamore’s store, in the satne street ; that this excited his surprise and went up sta’rS where he found Whitte morcin bed ;that soon after he saw Mavo come in with two Cheeses, and afterwards with a large bundle, which he thinks was Sugar, from Whitternore’s store. That on Thursday Mayo crossed the river to Carolina, and returned on the afternoon of the next dav ; that his wife, some time after his arrival, and in the picsence of the depettu-tit, said to him “ My Dear you know that all the stiver which Whit emore had, he has given to me to lake care o’; but I should he very glad you could get his paper mo ney also, which must be upwards of 1000 dollars.” “ That on the same night when Deponent was going to bed, Mayo said to him ; Love do not sleep in the same bed vrnere vou slept before, as I shall carry that bed into my room and sleep with V/hittemore —That before the Deponent went to bed, Mayo told him there was money to ire made ; Deponent answered, he ■would be very glad >o make m mey provided he could be sale —Mayo replied, that money could be made, and a good deal ; anil all be concealer! —then Deponent went to bed—that on Saturday morning, about two hours before day, Mavo came to his bed side, shook and aWoke him, told hnn to get up and come along with him, which he accordingly did ; that as soon as he came into the roo-n where Whittemore was in bed, Mayo told him that if he did not what they should want him to do that by God he should be pat to death ! that ‘here was another man, who went under the name of King, standing by VVhit temore’s head ; he bad a re I handkerchief on his face wit i boles for his eyes and mouth ; Sc savs he could identify tr| e man, if he saw him again.— lhe De ponent answered to Mavo s threat, that being there, he con* sidcrcd himself as g r eat a crimi nal as they, and that he would do whatever should be required of him—then Mayo said ; you shall have an equal part of the money. who stood at the bed’s feet, tuck up a piece of a bar of iron, which lav by the r ed post, and struck Whittemore on the h: ad with ‘he -feme, which bl*w seemed to kill him—the light was then put out Sc, the dead body huddled up—Depo nent mentions that previous to this catastrophe, and abort tea time, Mayo came into the house below, bringing ift his hand a phi al with a considerable quantity oi Laudanum in it, ad >sc of which in presence of his wife, he pour ed into a cup adding tea to it, and carried or sent tt up stairs (we cio not recollect which the deponent declares) to Whittemore, then sick in btd. That after the body had been wrapt up, tied round the knees and under the arms with ropes, they took it to rhe next room and drept it into the street, atl three holding the rope to slip him down. That they then took the body by Mayo’s yard across the fence, ro the hfok, where having lied some cert.* n weight to ii, they threw it into ‘he river and soon after sunk 1 ’1 hat after rhe whole was over, they returned to the house. Ala. o went up stalls and washed the room himself of the blood (stains of blond by the bye, re vet to be seen on the floor of toe room, in which Whittemore, slept)—Deponent further saith, that on Satin day morning, be heard iVlayo say to his wife, “ he is in ‘he river, now look out ?” & that she said ; “ very well!” That before break fact she asked Deponent to go and buy her a chisel, and that, he went, and b'r iowed one, and brought it to her —That about VI o’clock in the dav, Mrs. Mayo gave him 46 Collars, in silver, and desired him to be off, because, added she, you know how it was, so that you had better go away; giving him then Whittemore’s Watch, observing, she did not want it —And further Deponent saith not.
