States, Rating that, after nu
merous experiments & much
reflection, they are convinced
that they can, with proper cau
tion, transport Ice to tropical
climates, and a lid to preferwe
it there; that the introduction
of that article into the dland
of Jamaica will be attended
with the rnoft fahitary effect ;
and that it is a commerce en
tirely new, and never before
carried on by any nation or
individual; and praying that
the house will grant them the
privilege of importing ice and
{now into that island for the pe
riod of ten years, excluhve
of a 1 others, except the fub
jeOs of the united kingdom of
Great Britain and Ireland.—

- The committse to whom was
yesterday recommitted the ,£ Bill
to prohibit the inportation of.
Slaves,” reported the bill with
sundry amendments. One of the
amendments declares;, that any
person concerned in the importa
tion of slaves, should be adjudg
ed guilty of felony, and on con
viction thereof, should suffer,
death ; another provides, that the
slaves so imported, should be for
feited in those states only, in
which slavery is permitted ; in ci
ther 3’_ates, the persons importing
them, are t< be subject to a pe
nalty. The bill was read twice,
and referred to a committee of
the whole house on Monday.
On motion of Mr. Crownin
shield, resolved. That it is ex
pedient to reduce the duties on
foreign •’pfined sugar and sugar
candy, imported into the United
States from and after the
day of next; and that all
disabilities, imposed on the im
portation and exportation of the
same, be removed. Referred to
the committee to whom was re
ferred the petition of sun dry su“
gar-refiners.
