OH, fieml disguis’d in Honor’s
garb divine ! *
Who impious durst her sacred
vestments “'ear,
Receive exulting, at thv bloody
shrine,
The noblest victim ever offer’d
there !
So dear was honor to his manly
heart,
That hr, devoted, follow’d e’en
her shade;
He knew thee false, and hollow
as thou art,
Yet, fatal error ! he thy call obey
ed.
Ilis country v>l p ads—My patriot
son, O hear
Mr hope, mv darling, for my
sake refrain !
Each -else of hfe proclaims his
country dear ;
Rut oh ! for once his country
pleads in vain !
His wife, his,children, must he
from them part ?
Give to cacli cherish’d form such
heartfelt pain ?
The husband, father, melted at
his heart,
It bled, it paus’d—alas ! it paussd
in vain.
Press’d totli” field, yet gen’r
ous to excess,
He votv’d no blood on his pure
hands should glow :
The fatal green his pensive
footsteps press,
He fads, lie bleeds, and life’s last
torrents How.
Yet, vet he lives ! to seal his
peace with Heaven,
To bless Ins Saviour with his fleet
i i g breath ;
Like him, to own his murderer
was forgiven,
With dying Ups, e’en eloquent in
death.
Now clos’d those Ups, which
with resistless swa\,
Con!:! thrill each breast, each
storm impassion bind ;
Clos’d aSjtckjse eyes, where
dawn’d the heart’s soft ray,
Where flash’d th’ effulgence ofth’
nneqnuii’d mind.
A victim to ambition's lawless
rage.
Bath’d with bit country’s tears
onr hero fell ;*
Pride of our hearts and glory
of the age,
Thou soul of honor ! Hamilton,
farewell!
No time thy memory ever will
erase,
But distant ages shall revere thy
fame ;
And while, their heroes shall
thy actions trace,
R [Ha< wnli wonder thy adored
name !

RUSSIA.
The people who inhabit thele
wild regions aie for the moil
part of Sciavonick biood, and
of Ahauck origin : their pro
genitor s were known by the
name of JSarmatians. Long
dilumted among thendelves &
jn a Rate ot balbardm, they
were reduced in the thir
teenth century to vaffdlage un-
der the Tartars. From this
condition they w<ire refcuetl in
the fifteenth ceptUfy by their
Czar, Joar Rafilowitz, who,
with his graodfon, of the lame
name, men of vigour and ta
lents, though rude and fcroci
-0111, extended the RulDan do
minion, and made the nation
known throughout Europe.
Succeeding Sovereigns, among
whom Peter I and Catharine
II were preeminent, not only
enlarged their territories, but
promoted civilization and im
provement of every kind ; and
at length raised the Ruffian em
pire to the dignity of a firft rate
European power.
The Ruffian national charac
ter appears to be marked with
fed ate nefs and tranquillity,mix
ed with liveliness and fociabili
ty. They arc hospitable and
good tempered among one a
nolher, capable of flrong at
tachments, (agacious, and pa
tient ol hardships. The I'ervi
tutie in which the lower eludes
live, and the defpouck ruie ex
ereifed over the highell, have
made them supple, cunning, &
crouching. Maniy elevation
of foul with steady principle
are rarelv met with among
them. The ancient nobility
have vafl estates, which they
re* kon by the number of vas~
Pals with which they are Rock*
ed; and tl.ev live in a kind of
rude magnificence, fbunning
the Court and pubiick employ
ments.
The Ruffian pcafantry are
remarkable for their readiness
in acquiring the common arts
of life, feverai of which they
exercise for domdtic purposes.
In the higher departments of
intelleQ, nothing masterly or
original has yet appeared a
mong them, which may per
haps be owing to their recent
civilization. Their implicit o
bedience, joined with natural
robudnefs of constitution and
habit of endurance, renders
them excellent ioldiers in the
modern practice of war, where
mechanical discipline is more
tequifite than emhufiaftic ar
dour. They shrink at no dan
ger or fatigue, and arc only to
be conquered by extermina
tion.
