From the Literary Magazine,
RUINS.
I like to look upon the waste of
time,
To stand ’mid ruins, while the
ruthless wind
Shakes the old column, and thro’
battered walls
Pours his long sullen howl. From
such a scene
The mind takes thought and sadly
ponders on
The flight of years, on man , un
stable man,
Who walks the earth, & breathes
a fitful life,
Then falls before the blast that
levels all.
That king of Milan was no com
mon king.
Who bade the poet on his tomb
inscribe
These melancholy words:—
“ Passenger, won!(lst thou
know the nothingness of all hu
man power and grandeur; learn
what I was, and behold what I
am. I had immense treasures,
vast palaces, superb cities; mv
name alone made all Italy
tremble. Os what use is all this
to me now? Behold nte shut up
within a stone, and devoured by
worms.”
Thou tomb of fallen pride, ye
hoarv walls,
Yc mouldering fragments, and ye
silent halls!
A pensive wanderer, I come to
trace
Where sleep the ashes of your
mighty dead,
To bid Remembrance, with her
busy train,
Dwell on the splendour of your
former reign,
When here the haughty baron
held his court,
And your halls echoed to the
voice of sport.
Now while the sun is gone, and
Cynthia’s fight
Silvers the shadows of affrighting
, ."’gK
While, bathewygh dew, thesul
ien-sonndn. b g.'.le,
With ghostly music fills the hill
and vale;
And while the flood, once stain’d
with warrior gore,
Breaks its dark billows on the
winding shore,
Here let me rove, unheeded let
rue nmse,
And drench my temples in the
midnight dews;
Here let me call 10 mind that sto
ly told
By defac’d legends, and by ma
trons old.

THE VAMPIRE.
Capr, Stedman was, while
in Surinam, attacked during
his sleep by one of ibele .\.i
inals; and as bis account of
this incident is somewhat lin
gular, and tends to elucidate
the fa£l, we shall extratl it in
his own language, from his
narrative.
“ I cannot here,” fays he,
“ forbear relating a lingular
circumltance refpe&ing my
fell', viz. that on waking a
bout four o'clock one morn
ing in ary hammock, I was
extremely alarmed at finding
my fell weltering in congealed
bioed, and without feeling
any pain whatever. Having
started up, and tung for the
iurgeon, with a fire brand in
one hand, and all over he
lm eared with gore; to which,
if added, my pale iace, Ihort
hair, and tatttttd apparel, he
might well alk the queffiou
thou a spirit of health, or gob
lin damn’d,
Bring with thee airs of heav’n, or
blasts from hcl ?
The mylletv, however, was,
that I hid been bitten by the
Vampire or speftre of Cutan?,
which is also called the Jlying
dog of Mew Spain, and by the
Spaniards pcrro-volador; this
is no other than a hat, of a
rnonftrous size, that fucks the
blood from men and cattle
while they are fall aflerp, even
sometimes tili they de; and
as tie mariner in which they
proceed is truly wonderful, 1
{hall endeavour to give a dif
tinfl account of it. Knowing,
by inflinfl, that the person
they intend to attack is in a
found flumher, they generally
alight near the feet, where,
while the creeture continues
fanning with his enormous
wings, which keeps one cool,
he bites a piece out of the tip
of the great toe, so very (mall
-indeed, that the head of a pin
could scarcely he received into
the wound, which ts conic*
quentlv not painful; yet thro
this orifne lie continues to
fuck the blood, until he is o
bliged to disgorge. He then
begins again, and thus con
tinues fucking and disgorging
till he is (carccly able to fly,
and the lufferer has often been
known to llcep from time into
eternity, Cattle they general
‘ly bite in the ear, but always
in places where the blood
■flows spontaneously Hav
ing applied tobacco ashes a
the belt remedy, and washed
the gore from tnylelf and my
hammock, I observed fcveial
small heaps of congealed blood
all round the place where I
had lam, upon the ground; on
examining which, the futgeon
judged that I had lult at leaf!
twelve or fourteen ounces du
ring the night.”
