LED YARD’S PRAISE OF
(VO.MEN.
Thro’ many a land and clime a
ranger,*
With toilsome steps I’ve held
my “ay,
A lonely, unprotected stranger,
To ail the stranger’s ills a prey.
While steering thus my course
precarious,
My fortune still has been to
find
Men’s hearts and dispositions va
rious,
But gentle women ever kind.
Alive to every tender feeling,
To deeds of mercy always prone
The wounds of pain and sorrow
healing
With soft compassion’s sweet
40C* tCIUP.
No proud delay no dark suspicion
Stint3 the open bounty of their
heart ,
They turn not from the sad pe
tition,
But cheerful aid at once im
part.
Form’d in benevolence of nature
Obliging, modest, gay Sc mild,
Woman’s the same endearing
creature,
In courtly town and savage
wild.
When parch’d with thirst, with
hunger wasted,
Her friendly hand refreshment
gave :
llow sweet the coarsest food
has tasted ! !
What cordial in the simple
wave !
Her courteous looks, her words
caressing,
Shed comfort on the fainting
soul :
Woman’s the stranger’s gen’ral
blessing,

‘ arming Flow’r,
Which bashful seems to sink
from view ;
Tho fair frail Empress of an hour,
Quickly will fade its radiant
l>ue.
So fair, so sweet, my hopes once
bloom'd,
And an ! as transient too the
date ;
To cold negiect untimely doom'd,
Soon bliail I meet an early fate.
And while that fate you sadly
mourn,
And pay the tear to friendship
due ;
This throbbing breast no longer
torn,
Shall bid to all its wars adieu.
