which you may be sure I was
not very sorry for ; they say they

Extract of a letter from Captain
Lovett, of the ship Connecticut
from N. For/c, arrived at Sur •
riuam, dated March 1 5th 1807,
to his correspondents in this
city.
“ 1 arrived here in a pafTage
of 30 days after having been
ashore on the Mud banks to
the leeward of that river, wi:h
the lots of my ftnall bower,
dream cables and anchors.
The next day after getting off
the mud bank, was boa.ded
by a French privateer of one
gun cailed the L’Efpede, capt.
Mofee, or Morris, from Gua
daloupc, who obbed me of
all my spare- cordage, blocks,
hanks, fpurryarn, {'pars, and
both my speaking trumpets,
(which the captain took
himfelf) taking and destroying
evety thing they could lay
their hands on, They also
broke open my desk and took
all my money whilst I was on
board the privateer. Took
my paflenger and all his bag
gage on board hisveffel, under
pretence of his being a British
iubjedf; and after having de
tained him until 9 P.M. opened
l.is trunks robbed him ofabout
103 dollars w orth of clothes,
and then lent him again on
board the ship keeping three
of my bell men who were
Spaniards and Italians, faying
that he had orders from the
Fiench government to press
into the service the lubjefct#
of Spain, Italy, and Portugal.
In this (filiation he left me
about ten o’clock at night with
only one man and three bovs,
one of whom had not been a r
hie to do duty for 1 o days pre
vious; and with great exertion
and perfeveranc., we gained
this port in three days after.
