PEACE BETIVEEN’ GPEAr.BR/.
TAFX, RUSSIA, W TURKEr.
We had the fatistattion to
announce verterday, the glori
ous intelligence received from
the Dardanelles. Government
have net yet received the of
ficial dispatches from Sir John
Duckworth or Mr. Arhuth*
not; hut they are in pofTeffion
of other advices to which we
underrtand, they attach implicit
credit—
Indcedthe Dutch paperstothe
6th which have arrived render
the intelligence very probable.
I hey flute that the Vienna
Court Gazette, of the 2ill ult.
announces the commencement
ofhoftilities, that Admiral Lou
is’s squadron wasjoined off Te
nedos, between the 15th and
tßth of Feb. by four three
deckers, several frigates and
(1 >ops —dnt upon receiving
this reinforcement, the English
fleet forced ihe Strait of the
Dardanelles, which is rtrongly
defended, and burnt, or other*

squadron, coufilfing of one
(hip of the fine and several fii
gates. Negotiations for peace,
it adds, were then commenced.
The inie ligence which gov
ernment have received is more
particular, as well as more re
cent. Admiial Lotus remain
ed off Tcriedos, cruising be
tween dm Iflmd and the 111-
and of l.euuios, till he was
joined by Sir J. Duckworth —
they then foiced the paflage of
the Dardanelles amidst a tre
mendous fire, which however
did little damage to our Ihips.
The fire from the Old Cattle
on the north fide of the Strait,
is (aid to have been, for a short
*UiftC) pCAufioi Ijr L?Ui t% -
was toon (ilenced by the Bri
tish Thunder, and the fort is
Lid to have been reduced al
molt to a heap of ruins. The
Turkish squadron opposed an
unavailing refirtance. It is
laid that the number of ships
taken or dertroyed was much
greater than the Vienna Ga
zette dates —the number is re
ported to have been ten fail of
the line. The vigor of our pro
ceedings, in conjunction with
the Ruffian squadron, spread
universal conliernation & dis
may. Proceeding through the
Dardanelles into the sea of
Marmora, we prepared to car
ry our (nice before Conitanti”
nopie; but befo’e any thing
was attempted againrt that city,
a mess nger was lent off to the
Divan,.offering terms of peace.
The Divan, after ash art con
fultation, acceded 10 them, Sc
the following is the fubliance
of the conditions we didated,
in concert with our allies, to
the Porte.
“ That the English should
retain pofTeffion of the Dar
danelles till a general peace.
That Rulfia (hould also
keep pofTeffion of certian of
the Turkish fortreffes till a ge
ne al peace,as a security for j'-e
fidelity of the Porte.”
The firft Sc immediate confe
quence of this ad of vigor was
die dissolution of the French
infl icnce. All the fine woven
inmgues of M. Talleyrand and
M. Sebartiaui, were dellroyed
in an rnrtant, and M. Scbas r
tiani was ordered away from
Conitan inople in 24 hours.
The re-efiabhlhmet of peace
between the Porte and this
country and Russia, will un
doubtedly produce a prompt
and coiffiderable etlect upon
the “nr in Poland. The grea
ter nan of the Ruffiin army
in Turkey has in all probability
set off on its march to reinforce
genera! Benningfen.
No general battle has as yet
been fought in Poland. The
French head quarters remain
ed at Orterode on the i<> 1 ult.
and nothing beyond partial ac
tions had taken place. A ge
neral battle however was ex
petted.
The homeward-bound East-
India fleet, under convoy of
his Majertv’s ship Sampson,
passed Port ftnouth on Saturday.
A vessel from Caen, in Nor
mandy, is arrived: (he failed
on the evening of mrfday
last, hut brings no papers. The
captain reports, that great anx
iety prevailed, in consequence
of the length of time that had
elapsed since any communica
tion had been publicly announ
ced from the armies; and that
the people ori the coart of
France were greatly dilpirited,
from the apprehension that fe
rious reveries had befallen the
troops. The Ruffians were
looked upon as the inolt for
midable of the continental cue
mies ever yet encountered by
France.

Government have received
dispatches from the Mediter- j

Rv a letter this morning re
reived from Yarmouth, we un
derhand that the important in
telligence from the Dardanelles
is confirmed by dispatches on
their way to the Foreign Office
from Mr. Thornton, late mini
fler at Hamburgh, and now
resident in Danish ITolftein.
The force with which Ad
miral Duckworth passed the
Dardanelles,confided of nine
fliius of the line, two frigates,
and a bomb. The refiltance
they met with was comparative
ly feeble. The British tars fi,
far from feeling aoprehenfive,
on viewing the Turkish batte
ries, absolutely gave 3 cheers
as they passed them.
The fire bv which his Ma
jerty’s (hip Ajax has been de
rtroyed was inerelv accidental,
It took place below deck ami,
after burning fome time reach

blew up. Captain Blackwood,
