a buggy-ride* A buggy-ride, perhaps, la not The finest subject for a song. But when the muse has thus been caught, To treat things right I deem no wrong. Twas even’s stillest, saddest hour. When all the ether seemed ablaze With filings of a golden shower That sparkled in the western haze. The truest pair of glowing eyes. Though fathomless as azure's sea, Glanced up in mine with mute surprise, And flashed with friendship’s ecstasy. Os course they were the “ corner-stone ” Os this production, howe’er grand; They give it depth, and strength, and tone, If to such heights it doth expand. Along the quiet, dusty way, With even’s shadows drooping down, To fold the fleeting, dying day In dingy robes of deepest brown, We drove our slowly-prancing steed (Hired horses ne’er possess a soul), And. though it always is the need, I never thought of paying •• tod,” Until at last she said that I Must write a poem of our ride. I thought the theme was rather “ dry,” Unless xhe be the song implied. And, whisp’ring in her list'ning ear, I asked a slight but simple boon— So simple that no maid need fear Bestowing it upon a “loon.” It was not granted; and, of course, I knew it was not right to steal; ’Twould tinge our joy with a remorse I hope no soul shall ever feel. Oh, why hoard those exhaustless stores Os rapture that but bringeth bass? Why wreck our hopes on fancy’s shores, When ’tie no theft to steal a kiss? I plead—but it was vain to plead; • And teased—but useless ’twas to tease; And reasoned—but ’twas wisdom’s need That whispered this would never please. The ride was over, and at last The silent, parting hour had come. When thoughts are roaming swift and fast, And eyes but speak, and lips are dumb. And, though but friends, I know the bliss That little favor might have wrought; The rapture of one simple kiss Had savored this with deeper thought. I learned a lesson. So may you Young men and boys of “tender” years, \\ ho buggy-ride and read this, too; ’Twill save you many doubts and fears. Don’t beg and crave so slight a boon (And yet so great you cannot break it), But if a kiss you want, sir “ loon,” Just simply watch your chance and take it. —Chicago Ledger. Worst Old Pelican (Leadvi>le Democrat.] One of the most remarkable things noticeable in social life is the unanimity with which people shake their relatives. Recently a gentleman arrived in Carson with a letter of introduction to one of our leading citizens from the citizen’s uncle. After the Car-ionite read the let ter he remarked: “Glad to ste you, sir. Glsd to see anybody who knows my unc'e in Cleve land, How are all the folks’?” “Splended. I spent six weeks there last fall, and I don’t think I ever met such a tine family of genial, hospitable and cultivated people.” “ Yes?” “ Yes, indeed—l never spent a pleas anter time in my life. Your relatives, are, indeed, the—” “ Well, young man, if my relatives are such hue people they must have , changed like thunder since I lived with them. 1 lived there a year, and I think they are about the worst pelicans in the deck. I wouldn’t spend a month with the crowd for the whole town of Cleve land.” “ Indeed,” said the other. “ Well, since you have been so candid about it, 1 might as well remark right here that your unde and his whole family are the toughest collection of old fossils I have ever had the misfortune to be steered again-t.” “ Put it the r e, young man—you show good sense. Let’s go ia and take some thing.” In a few minutes more the two men w. re p’edging perdition to the Cleveland relatives over a foaming schooner of Carson beer. FINANCE AND COMMERCE.
