HQuThat part of tho Queen’s Speech,
referring to the Treaty with Austria, caused
considerable excitement in the British Par
liament When the reply was moved, the
Earl of Derby made a furious assault on
the policy of the Government in the con
duct of the war. He taunted the Ministry
with their sluggishnoss, and said that the
words “too late” applied to all their pro
ceedings. He strongly condemned both
Austria and Prus-ia for their policy and
declared ho had little faith in either of
them.
D’Israeli made a brilliant attack upon the
indecision of the Government and laughed
at the idea of Austrian assistance. Even
Lord John Russel in defending the steps
taken by the Government did not express
any very favorable opinion of the Austrian
Treaty. Ho said:—
He was never satisfied that Austria had
P ursued that course which was her duty.
le thought that Austria, os a great Euro
pean Power, ought to have earlier joined
the maritime Powers. Austria has now ad
vanced a step further than 6he had gone be
fore, feut she has not even yet gone the
length of saying that if, before the end of
the year, peace were not made with Russia,
she woula be belligerent. She had only
this length, that if she should be at war
with Russia, a treaty offensive and defen
sive should, ipso facia, exist between Aus
tria, England and France. She Lad like
wise agreed, that, before the end of the
year, she would take into further considera
tion what steps she would be prepared to
take with respect to terms of peace with
Russia.
These remarks created a sensation and
knocked down the funds. There is less in
clination than ever to put any faith in the
cooperation of Austria with the Western
Powers and a growing contempt of the Min
istry which will not improbably terminate
in their resignation.
Democracv in Virginia.—The Iticlunond
Enquirer observes: “There never was a
canvass in the State, in the beginning of
which some disappointment and discontent
were not manifested by individual Dem
ocrats, but there was never yet a canvass
which did not result in tho defeat of the
whig party.” There was difference of opin
ion in the democratic convention respec
ting the nomination of a candidate for the
office of governor, hut choice of the majoi-
ity having selected Mr. Wise, the friends of
the other aspirants, and the aspirants them-
selvss, are rallying to his support with zeal
and unanimity. The democratic journals
which favored the claims of other gentle
men, have come out, without an exception
with eloquent appeals in support of Mr.
Wise. This is a significan sign; for, to a
chieve a signal triumph, it is only requisite
that the democracy of Virginia should lie
cordially united.
Supposed Insanity ok the Duke of Cam
bridge.—The London correspondent of the
Boston Post writes as follows:
Madness, like murder, will out, however;
and the young scion of Royalty proves tho
purity of his blood, by getting crazy, like
nis grandfather. It seems that some strange
ness of conduct was noticed after the battle
of the Alma, in the Duke of Cambridge,
but nothing of a decided character appear
ed until after the defeat of the Russians at
Inkermann. lifting across the battle field
and observing a wounded Russian endeavor
to 6hoot an English soldier, instead of run
ning him through on the 6jK)t, the Duke be
gan to reason with him, and his aids coming
up, they overheard him saying: that lie
should use all his influence at head quarters
to have him hanged! As tho dead were
being carried by, the Duke began to remark
—“That man is not dead, set him on his
legs, he’ll walk,” and upon Lord Raglan’s
remonstrating with him upon the ill time
for such buffoonery, he replied. “Buffoone
ry, my Lord! I am amazed. The man is
not dead. I myself, saw him alive, and
talked with him this very morning!” Meas
ures were instantly taken to report the Duke
as an invalid, and to remove him from his
command.
1 Wc learn from the California papers
received by the last arrival that tho experi
ment of establishing an overland stage route
is to bo energetically tested. Messrs.
Adams & Co., with their characteristic
promptness and energy, have already sent
au agent to establish himself at Salt Lake
City, and to examine the routo between
thero and California, an experienced mail
contractor accompanies tho party, to deter
mine the feasibility of a senn-monthly mail
Meantime tho Company announces its readi
ness to transport express matter on mules.
These arrangements it is presumed’ refer
only to the route between Salt Lake and
California, bnt they are of the greatest im
portance diminishing" tho distance remain

Trade With the East.
The late successful expedition of Com
modore Perry, promises to confer sooner
than the most sanguine anticipated, the
most important benefits upon the world at
large, as well as upon this country where it
originated. Recent accounts from China
state that the English admirals .Sterling,
has made a treaty with the Japanes, open
ing two of the ports of that country .o the
trade of the English. The Dutch, it is well
known, have for a long period of time, car
ried on restricted commerce with Japan.
Other nations will doubtless soon form trea
ties of alliance, similar to those of our own
country and England. Thus one success
will continue to follow another till this once
inhospitable people shall be placed on terms
of peace and friendship with the whole
family of mankind.
The influence which this sudden opening
np of trade with the East is eventually to
have upon the commercial world, cannot
well be overrated. Especially our own
county will reap benefits which no human
foresight can fully estimate. Situated mid
way between tho East and the AVest of die
Old World, washed on either side by oceans
on which their commerce rides, America
naturally forms the depot of the globe. Our
countless shipping, too, offers itself fo- this
immense carrying trade, is even now V and 1
ready and upon the spot. Other people of
the civilized world are at war; we are at
peace. Let it be ours to seek the golden
fleece while others reap the iron fruits of
war.
Opposed to Soup.—The New York Jour
nal of Commerce says .*
“Another meeting <^red republicans—or
whatever they may b^klled—we know not
how else to desigunate them was held in the
Park yesterday. Several speeches were
made of the-same stamp as those of which
we have already spoken. They were cal
culated to engender bitter animosity be
tween the rich and the poor, and in no wise
to benefit the needy. In the midst of the
throng, a banner was displayed, on which
was inscribed, Political knaves and spec
ulators have robbed us of our bread, and
they offer us soup. We demand our rights.
We despise and contemn the rule of tyr*
ants.' *
terms os it will be our duty to propose
whenever a minister of the Emperor shall
declare he is directed to enter iuto negotia
tion—if, 1 say, their terms arc not accepted
by the Emperor of Russia, I anticipate that
we shall have, before the opening of the
next campaign, the alliance of Austria with
us on tho offensive and defensive.
The. Campaign in ilic Crimea.
The diary of the siege of Sabastopo! and
of operations in the Crimea is thus given;
November 29.—The war correspondent of
the London Times says: “ Although it may
be dangerous to communicate facts likely to
he of service to the Russians, it is certainly
hazardous to conceal the trutb from the
English people. They must know sooner
or Later that the siege has been for many
days practically suspended, that our batte
ries are used up and silent,* and that our
army arc exhausted by the effect of the ex
cessive labor and watching to which it lias
been so incessantly exposed. The Russians
know this well enough. The relaxation of
our fire is self evident; but our army though
weakened by sickness, is still equal to hold
ing its position, and to inflict chastisement
on assailants who may venture to attack.
Nothing would so animate our men, des
titute of all stimulating influences beyond
those of undaunted spirit, than the prospect
of meeting the Russians outside their en
trenchments, and deciding the campaign by
the point of the bayonet. Last night there
was a brisk affair between the Chasseurs de
Yiuccnnes aud Russian Riflemen in front of
the flagstaff battery earth works, and the
Russians dispelled all absurd mytlis about
their being in want of powder and ball, by
a most tremendous cannonade assault and
counter assault, continued amid a furious fire,
which lighted up the skies with sheets of
flame from nine o’clock at night until four
in the morning. Volleys of musketry and
salvoes of cannon roared through the camp
during the whole night; but few lost their
re3t in consequence, for these affairs are now
of nightly occurrence.
Nov. 20.—Tho fight between tho French
and Russian riflemen, aided by artillery,
was, as usual, renewed last night. Tho ob
ject of this contention is a mud fort near
the Quarantine Battery, which the French
persist in holding, although useless. Prep
arations for the renewal of a general bom
bardment are being proceeded with from
day to day ; the great obstacle is the bad
state of tho roads.
Nov. 2$.—During the day the Russians
fire on British about one gun every five
minutes. The English look out. A man
cries, Tower, Iiedan, or Garden Battery,
and the shot is returned ; but the fire on the
French is much more lively, and is kept up
with sonic effect on their earthwork and
parallel. Every night aoout nine o’clock,
the Flasstaff, Quarantine and Wall batteries,
open a furious cannonade, which, for from
twenty to forty-five minutes, is as hard as
the men can load, right into the French
Hues, and then follows instantly a sally, the
result of which is invariably the same. The
Russians push a strong column out of tho
place, rush towards tho first line, drive in
the pickets and riflemen, get up to the first
parallel—sometimes into it, occasionally be
yond it and close to the second parallel—
when they arc received, as they advance,
by the French covering parties, with a dead
ly fire ; they halt and fire in return, are
charged by the French, who route and pur
sue them into the town, hut who are obliged
to retire by the flank fire of the batteris aud
street guns. In this way the French lose
forty or fifty men, but the loss of the Rus
sians in these alerks must be considerable.
Frequently, about day-break, tho Russians
repeat tho performance.
Nov. 29.—Storm, wind and rain. The
Russians have much strengthened their de
fences. They have scarped tho ground in
front of all their batteries, have constructed
strong batteries in front of the lines, thrown
up numerous earthworks, aud made sunken
batteries before all their redoubts, and a
long scarp of slopes. During the uight a
particularly strong sortie was made on the
French. J Tearing a noise a French rifleman
crept forward and saw a column of Rus
sians, two thousand strong, forming in the
rear of tho battery. The French, therefore,
seven hundred strong, silently' mounted the
parapet of their own battery, and received
the Russians with a dead volley; then,
leaping down, attacked them with the bay
onet, and compelled them to retreat.
Nov. 30.—A heavy fire on the French
during the night. The Grand Duke Micha
el was observed making a reconnoisauce at
a distance of one thousand yards. Flags of
truce were exchanged respecting money for
the prisoners.
Dec. 1.—More rain. The state of the
roads prevented the arrival of supplies, and
part of the British forces put temporarily
on short allowance. The deaths from fever
and cholera reach sixty daily.
Dee. 2.—Continued raiu. The besiegers
began to erect huts for sholtor. Deserters
say that the condition of the Russians on
the field is worse than that of the allies.—
Much bell-ringing and rejoicing heard in
Sebastopol during the night, supposed caus
ed by the arrival of provisions.
Dee. 5.—The Russians made a sortie
against the French lines, when eight divi
sions of French under Gc-n. Forri repulsed
them with much loss.
Dec. 7.—The Paris Monileiir says the be
siegers’ batteries were re-established, and
before three days firing would be resumed.
The allies arc sufficiently entrenched and
provisioned to remain throughout the win
ter.
Dec. 13.—A Russian despatch states that
up to this date nothing of importance had
occurred before Sebastopol. Some small
sorties had been successful, in one of them
the Russians captured some small mortars
and spiked others of a larger size. The
fire of the allies continued feeble.
General Prospects.
The Russian defence on the South are es
timated at one hundred guns stronger than
when the siege began ; while, on the other
hand, the British have erected a very pow
erful battery, not yet opened, on an emi
nence North of tho valley of Inkerinann,
and commanding every house in Sebastopol,

iperient, thev afford jirmnpt :uid sure relief in Cos-
tivcncss. Piles, Colic, Dysentery, Humors, Scrof
ula nnd Scurvy, Colds with soreness of the body,
<’leers and impurity of the ldocd; in short, any
\nd event case where a purgative is required.
Thev have also produced some singularly suc
cessful eures in Rheumatism, Gout, Dropsy, Gravel,
Erysipelas, Palpitation of the Heart, Pains in the
Back, Stomach, nnd Side. They should he freely
taken in the spring of the year, to purify the blood
and prepare the system for the change of seasons.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach end
ootvtls into healthy action, and restores the appe
tite ai.d vigor. They purify the blood, and, hv their
stimulant action on the circulatory system, reno
vate tlie strength of the body, and restore the
••lasted or diseased energies of the whole organism.
Hence au occasional dose is advantageous, even
though no serious derangement exists; but un
necessary dosiug should never be carried too far.
as every nurgativ? medicine reduces the strength,
when taken to excess. The thousand cases in which
a physic is required cannot he enumerated here, hut
they* suggest themselves to the reason of every
body; and it is confidently believed this pill will
answer a better purpose than any thing which has ,
hitherto lecn available to mankind. When their j 3 - y
virtues arc or.ee known, the public wil! no longer |
doubt whnt remedy to employ when in need of a
cathartic uiedieinc.
