And now, who ate we for In this war, af
ter this f For a Hbertydoving periple the
English have directly tackeff up and indi
rectly conoocted more tyrannies than any
other power that ever existed. The French
have done their share truly of this dirty
work, and in the movement we quote she
seems to be the active power. But we think
we are right in ascribing to the energy and
omnipresence of British influenoe all that is
bad in the present ruinous war, now laying
waste the bent interests of Europe, and by
its indirect operations causing us much se
rious injury. It was said, and we said,
when this war broke out, well, it is a “bad
wind that blows no one good. - ' It was con
fidently predicted, that Austria and Prussia
both would take part in the contest, and if
they did not elect a side they would have
one chosen for them. In either event, Po
land and Hungary, we thought, would prof
it by the present disturbances, and we felt
sure that in this conjunction the wicked
selfishness of tyrants Lad beeu fairly con
founded and outwitted by its owu wayward
ness and presumption. But we admit, at
last, that this war is that bad wind that
blows no one any good. Poor Hungary,

powers of self-delusion must a ministry, and
not a ministry only, but a whole poople
have, who can thus stand to the back of a
despotism that to-day is as blind and as
fiendish as that of Morocco, and thou boast
themselves as the truest exponents of free
dom on earth. The fate of Poland is a
terrible one, but wo have heard the tale of
her wrongs till it. has ceased at last to wake
up the pains of an unavailing sympathy. If
England adds to tho now countless sumof her
debt other loads of wasted treasure in a volun
teered subsidy to heathens and besotted
Kings, the chances are that the whole amount
will be blotted out in oceans of blood. It
would bo a startling bit of news to hear
that Russia had turned liberal and that
through her the chains of Europe were to
be broken. Unless Austria is now passing
off on the allies a huge swindle, this to our
bumble view is the desperate leap that saves
the life of the Czar. Take the chain from
Hungary, turn Italy out of prison, arm Po
land and twelve months will settle the bal
ance of power—settle it so well on the side
of Russia that all the Allies can do will
never kick the beam. But when men are
really mad it is a bad time to talk to them of
reason, and self-interest itself whispers too
low to be heard when the storm of passion
raves. Such magnanimity as this on the
part of Nicholas would presuppose, we fear,
too much trust in human nature which he
has in time so outraged. On the part of
Kossuth we fear we would have to expect a
larger share of charity and forgiveness than
could lodge in the heart of one who had
from, the iron hand of despotism felt such
blows as now madden his life, to expect such
an amnesty or alliance ns would bo sincere
or practical. Any way the thing can work
we look to see the war rosult in almost ru
in for England—quite ruin to Bonaparte—
a clean sweep of Turkey—another fine
fight for Hungary—a great many noble
hearts more for the Siberian snows from
Poland—the best of times for our ship own
ers, cotton spinners and grain raisers—and
a perfect smasher to the cotton.

One of the circumstances which gave j
