on the day following the execution of the
written contract. The immense produc
tions of the country west of uts, and the sup
plies destined for that country were accu

cessary to embrace unfailing and prompt
means, to set in motion the obstructed

Upon one officer devolved the whole re
sponsibility of extricating the Road from
its embarrassment, and he did not feel, that
the right to sue upon a broken bond, would
be any satisfaction for a failure, if it should
unfortunately have occurred. It was not
necessary nor advisable to depend upon the

equivalent. Keeping in view uiese esson-
iail considerations, the proposition of Messrs
Tumliu, Huff <fc Co., was peculiarly appro
priate ; aud it was belived highly advanta
geous to the R»nd. It was, therefore, ac
cented, and it should be added here, that
the skillful management and untiring euer-
gv displayed in discharging their obligations
have fully justified the high estimate of their
ability, which secured them the contract.
Among the groundless and envious alle
gations sprung upon this contract, its enor
mous profits have been freely canvassed, ex
travagant and absurd estimates have been
made of the immense sums of money earned
by the Dray company, and, per contra.
wasted by the authorities of the Road. By
reference to the books of the office, it will be
found that the gross amount of their earn
ings is $25,072,95, from which are to be de
ducted sundry charges, not yet ascertained,
for damage ’and loss to freights while in
tbeir possession. To perform the labor,
they have been compelled to keep upon the
work for three months, a force of not less
than 80 hands, and 120 head of stock, con
suming large quantities of provisions of
every description, at a time when they com
manded very high prices; fortunately and
unexpectedly, the weather has been dry and
favorable, or the profits divided among the
co-partners equally, would not have been
enough to compensate them for the time and
attention necessarily withdrawn from their
regular pursuits.
The contract is now done—the work has
been done, and done well—and the profits
have not been exorbitant. If the parties
who under-bid these gentlemen, will con
sider the whole subject deliberately, they
will find reason to be thankful rather than abu
sive, that their proposals were not accepted.
I am well advised, that if the successful
parties had anticipated a termination of
their contract earlier than tho first day of
July, they would not have taken it at the
price paid. The work of construction has
been finished on the day predicted by those
who hud the best information upon which
io base their judgment, and this confidence
iin tho short duration of the Drayage con
tract. was an important element in fixing
the price. 11 was not desirable to make a
ruinous contract, to break up the parties
taking it, nor on the other hand to pay an
exorbitant price; it was only sought to have
the work (lone at a remunerating rate, and
to have it well done. Knowing that the
work has been well and faithfully perform
ed, believing that the profits have nut been
excessive, but hoping that these enterpris
ing gentlemen have been adequately re
warded for tiic close attention they have
given to their contract, l am contented with
the result, and can only regret that others
are dissatisfied.
.Exceptions have been taken to tho advance
*fi!acod upon freights and fares, since the
Lansing of the Bridge, to which it is re
marked, that a tariff of rates can be ar
ranged judiciously, only, by reference to
the cost /if transportation : when that be
comes exclusively enhanced, as in the pres
ent instance, not only by the amount actu
ally paid Portage, but by the other heavy
expenses incident thereto, it would appear
to be the part of a prudent officer, to assess
additional charges, the better to defray ad
ditional expenses. We were paying large
jutim into the Treasury, and estimates and
■earnings were made, based upon a contin
uance of successful operation ; new engines
had been placed upon the Road, and a con
tract for l(J0t* tons of new Rails had been
affected, both requiring large sums of ready
monev, when the disaster at Etowah occur
red, threatening the destruction of our
plans. It was believed that the point would
deter both freight and passengers. Under
such circumstances, was it prudent or po
litic, or just to the State, to permit all the
enormous expenses, growing out of this
misfortune, to be levied upon the resources
■ of her Road, or should those who used it
be taxed to pay a part: To this interroga
tory, the Superintendent did not seek an
answer from the interested few. but so
shaped his course as would best fulfill his
obligations to the whole people of Georgia.

H. G. Farrell’s Arabian Liniment Tri
umphant over Disease.
ThiH truly great medicine atill goes on, conquering
diNoase. and snatching many & poor powerless victim
from tiie grave. By its powerfully stimulating, pene
trating and anodyne qualities, it restores the u&e of
limbs which have been palsied for years ; and by its
singular power of reproducing the synovial fluid or
joint water, it cures all diseases of the joints with
surprising rapidity. Tor rheumatism, and affections of
the spine and spleen, it haft proved it-elf a srixinc;and
lor affections of the lungs, liver and kidneys, it is a
most valuable and powerful auxiliary; also, for all dis
eases of the glands, scrofula, goitre or swelled neck,
etc., etc. And indeed for almost ai^- disease where an
external application is required, this medicine stands
unparalleled. Sprains, bruises, cramps, wounds, chil
blains. burns, etc., are speedily cured hy it.
From tht Hon. Peter Menard, one of the Oldest
aS’cttlcre in Illinois.
It gives me pleasure to add my testimony to the vir
tues of your great medicine. One of my blooded horses
had n h welling over the cap of the knee, about the size
of a hen's egg. Some said it was a strain, and some,
that it was tho joint water from the knee, and could
not be cured. I tried oil cedar on it, and all the lini
ments and ointments, and they did no more good than
water. I then, by persuasion of m3’ friends, tried H.
G. Farrell’s Arabian Liniment, and 1 was happy to find
it take effect after a few days, and it finally cured the
noble animal entirely. I think it is decidedly the great
est liniment foj horse’s, and jihwcII as human flesh, 1
ever knew.

PALSY OK PARALYSIS.—Thadeus Smith, of Mudd
Creek Tazewell co., 111. says : “I had lost the use »t
mv ariu for more than a year, by palsy or paralysis; the
flesh had entirely withered away, leaving nothing but
skin, muscle ami bone. I tried all the best doctors, and
ail the remedies I could hear of, but they did no good.
I then commenced the use of H. G. Farrell’s Arabian
Liniment, and a few bottles entirely cured me, and m3*
arm is now as strong and fleshy as the other; it is also j
first rate for burns, sprains and bruises.

the Eye is subject. Where every other means hus I

Testimony.
The undersigned practitioners of Medicine in ;
theeityofNew York, having had occeasion to j
witness the practice of Drs. LiBrun ft Dufton, in ■
diseases of the Ear and Eye, layiug aside all pro- :
fessional jealousy, freely admit that the course j
pursued by them in treating disease; of these del- ;
ieate organs, from the unparalleled success attend- j
ing it, is well worthy the attention of our profes- j
sional brethren throughout the United States, be- :
lievingas we do, that Aural Surgery has not met |
with that attention which its important? demands. ‘
Their system of treating diseases of the middle |
and internal Ear, in chronic or complicated cases :
by means of “ Medicated Vapors,” forms a new j
era in the practice of Aural Surgery, aud fill? up j
avoid which has long been felt by the general i
practitioner. In diseases of the Eye, they seldom j
roquire to resort to an operation. As skillful Au- j
rists and Oeulis, enthusiastically devoted to their J
profe.-sion, we cordially recommend them to such j
as require their aid. 1

FEVER AND AGUE CURE,
Or, Nature’s Invaluable Specific,
F OR the prevention and cure of Intermittent and
Remittent Fevers, Fever and Ague, Chills and
Fever, Dumb Ague, General Debility, Night
Sweats, and ull other forms of disease which have
a common origin in Malaria or Miasma. The sub- |
tie atmospheric poison which at certain seasons is I
unavoidably iuhaied at every breath, is the same j
in character wherever it exists,—North, South,
East or West,—aud will every where yield to this
newly discovered antidote, which is claimed to be
the greatest discovery in medicine ever made.
This specific is so harmless that it may be taken
by persons of every age, sex or condition and it
will not substitute for one disease others- still
worse, as is too often the result in the treatment by
Quinine, tiercury, Arsenic, and other poisonous or
deleterious drugs, not a particle of any of which
ia admitted into this preparation.
The proprietor distinctly claims these extraoidi-
nary results from the use of this natural antidote
to Malaria.
It will entirely protect any resident or traveler
even in the most sickly or swampy localities, from
any Ague, or Bilious disease whatever, or any in
jury from constantly inhaling Malaria or Miasma.
It will instantly check tho Ague in persons who
have suffered for any length of time, from one day
to twenty yeare, so that they need never have
another chill, by continuing its use according to
directions.
It will immediately relievo all distressing results
of Billiou3 or Ague disease, such as general dobil-
ity, night sweats, ftc. The patient at once begins
to recover appetite and strength, and continues
until a permanent and radical cure is effected.
Finally, its use will banish Fever and Ague
from families and all classes. Farmers and all
tailoring men by adopting it as a preventive will
be free from Ague or Billious attacks in that sea
son of the year which, while it is the most sickly,
is the most valuable one to them.
One or two bottles will answer for ordinary eas
es, some n..iv require more.
Directions rrintod in German,French and Span
ish, accompany each bottle.
Price One Dollar. Liberal discounts made to
the trade.
Trade circulars fowardeden application, and the
article will bo consigned on liberal terms to re

SODA WATER, GesU i’tofit the
Fountain.
W ITH the return of ihe season, the undersign
ed has commenced drawing SODA WATER,
made from pure carbonic acid, which will be fur
nished his patrons flesh and well iced every day
through the Summer.
The superiority of Soda Water, Iresh from the
fountain, over that put up in bottles is so obvious
that it is surprising persons will use bottled Sodu
at all. Its healthful ness when compared wit h
Lemonade, Ginger Pop, and other fashionable
drinks, is such that the latter are interdicted by
the medical faculty, whilst Soda Water is recom
mended and used extensively.
A great variety of SYRUPS will be kept to suit
