The Allen and Kedltlan Um. •* **®°
and IMS.
Fifty-five years mo, Thomas Jefferson was
engaged at the head of the Democratic par-
ty in the struggle which hurled from power
the aristocratic federal administration of the
elder Adams, together with the Alien and Se
dition laws, which have lived in infamous
memory in the history of the country. Side
byside'with the treason plotted by the Hart
ford Convention, at a later and trying epoch,
will stand the monstrous outrage upon lib
erty of the Alien and Sedition laws, and
Know Kothingism is destined to form die
third figure in the trio of heresies, which
future Republicans will gaze on with won-
der and reprobation.
At the period of this struggle of Jefferson
with the anti-Democratio element in the
country, the “Aurora’'’ newspaper, publish
ed by Dunne, was the organ of the Republi
can party. The Washington Union has
lately reproduced some of its nble leaders
on the great questions then at issue. These
editorials are pertinent and good Democratic
thunder at this day. Quoting from the
Declaration of Independence, the following
among the list of grievances complained of
by our forefathers against the King of Great
Britain:
‘•The history of the King of Great Britain
is a history of repeated injuries and usur
pations, all having in direct object the es
tablishment of an absolute tyranny over
these States : to prove this, let facts be sub
mitted to a candid world:
“He has endeavored to prevent the popu
lation of these States; for that purpose,
obstructing the laws for the naturalization
of foreigners, refusing to pass others for the
encouragement of their mission hither, and
raising the conditions of new appropriations
of public lands,” «fcc., &c.
lie thus rebukes the Know-Nothingism of
that day:
“These articles are literally extracted from
the Declaration of Independence. Others
arc not noticed, in order that the attention
of the reader should be called more directly
to these, a cursory perusal of which will call
to the recollection of every man, cases too
closely resembling them to be mistaken or
misplaced. Let us trace back American his
tory only one short lustre, and ask ourselves
how it has happened that in twenty short years
after tec had expended millions, and sacrificed
80,000 lives to reject the government which
had itiflic/ed on us these grievances, the
VERY SAME EVILS IX NAME AND FORM, SHOULD
HE CREATED AND ESTABLISHED BY MEN CH09EN
BY THE TEOPLE TO PRESERVE THEIR LIBER
TIES.”
Speaking of the article of which this is
an extract, the Union well says: “The fol
lowing is the conclusion of the article in the
Aurora of December 3d, 1804. Its forcible
applicability to existing factions is extraor
dinary. IIow faithfully it describes the
rapid progress of Know-Nothingism under
•John Adams! Then, as now, Massachu-
-etts was the victim of fanatic priests and
secret machinations. Then, as now, Now
York had its masterspirit of faction. Then,
as now, Virginia stayed the torrent of pre
judice and proscription.”
Gov. Brown.
We clip the following eloquent extract
from the speech of Ex-Gov. Brown, lately
delivered in Tennessee, and commend it to
i he consideration of all parties:
Already you have been told by Wilson
and others, who arc the Master Spirits of
this party, that at the very next Congress,
the bills are to bo proposed that are to ruin
you. That bills shall bo brought forward,
even in December next, to repeal the Fugi
tive Slave Law—to repeal the Kansas and
Nebraska Law—to restore the Missouri
Compromise—to abolish Slavery in the Dis
trict of Columbia. Have these delegates
brought you home any satisfactory assurance
that their Northern allies will stand by you
and protect your property? Why, you
know they have not—you know that the
Know-Nothing States of the North have al
ready had their elections, and have returned
to the next Congress a majority, a large
majority, who will vote for every one of the
bills I have mentioned. You stand, there
fore, this day, is ruined in the House of Rep
resentatives, and your only hope of salva
tion is in the Senate. Have the Know-
Nothing delegates brought you any guaran
tee that their friends will stand by you and
your vast amount of property in that body?
No. Not the least, for there stands Wilson,
and every unc of his newly elected Know-
Nothing comrades, sword in hand, to cleave
you and your property down, the moment
the next Congress shall meet. On whom,
then, can you, and on whom do you rely,
in fact, for the defeat of thoso odious bills
in the Senate? You aro bound to say that
you rely on the Southern and Northern
Democratic Senators to defeat them. On
Democratic Senators! Why, then, have
vou entered into this unholy conspiracy, to
have them beaten and turned out of" the
Senate Chamber? Why go down into the
secret places of the earth, and swear your
deluded followers everywhere, never to vote
for a Democrat who does not become a
member of your Order, when you acknowl
edge that at this, the very darkest and most
trying moment the Soutli ever saw, your
mily hope for deliverance is on Democratic
Senators ! Tell me, again, as honest, can
did men,—if these virtues have not lied the
earth,—tell me, if those measures should
chance to pass the Senate, where would be
your last, lingering hope of safety to your
property, but in the veto of Franklin
Fierce ? And j et Know-Nothing delegates,
many of whom were mere broken down po
litical hacks, or disappointed office-seekers,
who have neither the talents or the charac
ter to attract attention, undertake to de
nounce Franklin Pierce and the Democracy
which nominated and elected him ! Malev
olence could poison the javelin, but the puny
arm of the assailant was too feeble to east
it high enough to reach the destined victim.
Democracy smiled at the impotence of the
deed, and only wished that its ingratitude
might not wound the spirit of the sainted
Jackson.

RISLEY’S COMPOUND EXTRACT OF BUCHU,
I S a combination of the most efficient remedies known
to tbe Medical Faculty, for the relief and cure of
those numerous complaints of the Urinary Organs, con
sequent upon infiamation or ulceration of the Kidneys,
Bladder and Urethra. It is prepared by an experienc
ed chemist, according to a formula approved by the
Medical Faculty, and is worthy the confidence of all
who may be suffering* from Pain and Weakness in the
small of the Back, Stoppage nnd Pain in voiding Urine,
Diabetas, or Excess of Urine, Strangury. Gravel, Gleet,
Leucorrlioea, &c.
RISLEY’S BUCHU is a reliable and standard popular
remedy for all diseases of the Urinary Organs, design
ed to displace the high priced and irresponsible nos
trums which are forced upon the notice aud credulity
of sufferers It is put up in large bottles, and sold at

HAVILAND, HAND & CO:, Charleston ; and bv HA VI
LAND. HARRAL& RISLEY, New York.
THE PHILOTOKEN OR FEMALE’S FRIEND,
I S a medicine that commends itself to heads of fami
lies and females in all conditions. Unlike most of
the nostrums for tho cure of all diseases, which are
forced upon tlv* notice and credulity of the suffering,
this is a female remedy exclusively : and one that can
be relied on for the cure and relief of most of the com
plaints peculiar to fomales. It is well known to Physi
cians that much of their suffering and ill-lien 1th may
be traced to irregularity iu their peculiar seasons, and
that false delicacy often deters them from seeking re-
ief. The Philotoken is infalible in the cuio of painful
menstruation, (and consequent sterility,) and for the
immediate relief of sypathetic nervous affections
sleepiness, anxiety, hysteria, &c. It is perfectly safe
in all cases, and is warranted to secure the approbation
and commendation of all who will exercise sufficient
confidence to give it a trial.
Full directions accompany it. Price $1 a bottle.
Sold by Druggists and country Merchants generally,

sometimes death. ROBERTS COLIC MIXTURE affords

ber, and ii commends itself to Mothers. Sold at25
