Who? What? and Wherefore? or a Few
Facts for the Invalid.
Have our readers ever heard of Professor Hollo
way? Undoubtedly they have, just as they have
heard of Humboldt, Arago, Oersted, Sillirnan, Agas
siz, and other notable men of learning. But have
they ever asked themselves who and what he is? If
they have no definite information on that matter, we
will proceed to enlighten them. The Professor is
an Engl'sh physician, a native of that country which
produced Harvey, Hunter, Abernethy, and other il
ium iruiti of medical science. So much for the who,
and now for the what. He is to other physicians
what Clay, Webster and Calhoun were to statesmen,
what Washington—revered name! —was to patriots
and generals—-what Shakspeare was to dramatists,
and Irving and Chalmers to preachers,—viz: the
greatest of his age and profession. His reputation
has penetrated the encrustations of prejudice, sur
mounted the barriers of malice, and he avowedly
stands alone, the Medical Colossus of the world. So
much for the what.
Wherefore do we speak of him here? It, when
<our fellow’ countrymen were dying by’ thousands, of
yellow fever, at Norfolk and Portsmouth, we had
heard of a remedy which would arrest the progress
of the disease, and stay the footsteps of the spoiler
And we had neglected to communicate it, what
•would have been our desert? Truly, a very sum
mary punishment by Lynch law. For if there be
Any duty more imperative than another, it is this—
-‘to visit the sick in their affliction,” and to use every
means for their restoration io health. This is why
we speak of Professor Holloway. This is our answer
to the WHERE POKE
Years ago, when the Professor was a much young
er man than he is at present, his attention was di
rected to the great disproportion between the cures
performed by the Physicians, and those which they
undertook to perform. He observed that not once
in a score of cases were they successful. It seem
ed to him, either that medicine was not worthy the
name of a science—that it was merely a thing of
chance, and therefore a positive injury to mankind,
or that the Physicians were ignorant of the true
healing art. Having embarked on the study of hu
man physiology, and understanding the pathology
of diseases, he alighted upon the true reason of want
of success, and made that discovery ufctich will im
mortalize his name. To cure a disease, doctors
-i.rated it locally, topically. Was it the kidneys that
were deranged? Or the liver? Or the stomach?—
Or the lungs? Straightway they proceeded to pre
scribe for kidneys, liver, lungs, or stomach, not
knowing that the evil was contained in the blow!,
which fed those organs with its life giving stream,
und that to arrest the disease at its very seat and
centre, they should purify that vital fluid, and leave
the rest to nature. This is the secret of Dr. Hollo
way’s astonishing success in all parts of the world.
He purifies the blood and health follows.
Let any sick person, who has “suffered manv
things of many physicians,” and obtained no benefit,
give heed to those word.-, of ours, and try Holloway’s
Piils —if he is internally afflicted, or Holloway’s Oint
wHHitMrtrn? mr w amicgy-.'ilM’ fUJOTgfi that the
Professor has arrived in this country and opened
an extensive establishment in New York, which
promises to rival his mammoth one in London.— V.

Making Diamonds.
The production of diamonds in the laboratory has
Ipng been thought possible; and from a charcoal
prepared from crystalized sugar, M. Despretz has
produced crystals of carbon having all the proper
ties of the diamond. This result was obtained by
the long continued action of the galvanic battery.
The crystals are microscopic, but dearly recognized
as octahedra, some black, others transparent. Gau
den, the famous lapidra, found these crystals to cut
diamonds and rubies, like powdered diamonds them
selves. It yet remains an achievement of chemical
science to produce these crystals of a size sufficient
for ornamental purposes.
West Point. -
The i oil owing is a description of a drill performed
by the light artillery corps at West Point } during
the recent examination:
‘There were six cannon, each followed by caisson
or ammunition wagon, both of which were drawn by
four horses Ihe raoidity and celerity of the evo
lutions were astonishing. Upon the sound of the
bugle the horses would be spurred across the plain,
the pieces unlimbered and discharged several times
a minute. Again would the bugFe sound, and be
fore the smoke over that part of the field had clear
ed aw r ay, the battery would be driven across the
plain at fu 1 gallop, and in a few seconds more, at
the word of command, a deafening roar would arise
from that quarter, which the surrounding hills re
verberated with startling distinctness. These pieces
?an bo discharged six times a minute. Another

Counsel.
But few of the reading public are aware how con
tinually an editor is called upon to advise his patrons
on every subject, from politics to the breed of cattle.
Through the whole Hinge of our duties none has per
plexed us more than to tel! our readers what to take
for a cure when they are sick. Hitherto this has
been a severe trial to all our skill, but it will not be
hereafter. We have been taking, and have seen the
evidence from others that have taken Doct. Ayer’s
Cherry Pectoral and Cathartic Pills. They need
but a slig ht trial to convince the most sceptical how
far they are superior to the other medicines we have
had in use. They have one single property of great
importance to the sick, and that is they cure.—Bos

Perry Davis.—Sir: The benefits I have received
from the uso of your invaluable remedy, the Pain
Killer, induces me to pen a word of praise for it. —
Experience has convinced me that for Headache, In
digestion, Pain in the Stomach, or any other part of
the system, Severe Chills, Weariness, common Colds,
Hoarseness, Cholera, Cholera Morbus, Diarrhoea,
Dysentery, Toothache, fcc., there is nothing better
than the Pain Killer. I have this hour recovered
from a severe attack of the Sick Headache, by using
two teaspoonfuls, taken at thirty minutes interval, in
a wine glass full of hot water, lam confident that,
through the blessing of God, it saved me from the
cholera during the summer of 1843. Traveling,
amid heat, dust, toil, change of diet and constant ex
posure to an infected atmosphere, my system was
daily predisposed to dysentery attacks, accompanied
with pain, for which the Pain Killer was a sovereign
remedy, one teaspoonful curing thp worst case in an
hour, or at most, ha if a day! I have heard many
i cases the country over of Dysentery T eing cured by
its use. Put iu the teeth, it would stop tie tooth
ache. Gratitude, and a desire for its general use,
has drawn from me this unsolicited testimonial in its
favor. D. T. TAYLOR, Jr.,

Worms!
As this is the season of the year when worms are
most formidable among children, the proprietors of
M’Lane’s Vermifuge, Fleming Bros., of Pittsburgh,
beg leave to call the attention of parents to its virtues
for the expelling of these annoying and often fata!
enemies of children. It was invented by a physician
of great experience in Virginia, who, after having
used it for several years in his own practice, and
found its success go universal, was jnducpd at last to
offer it to the public as a cheap but certain and ex
cellent medicine. It has since become justly popu
lar throughout the United States, as the most effi
cient Vermifuge ever known, and trie demand has
been steadily on the increase since its first introduc
tion to the public.
Purchasers will be careful to ask for Dr. M’-
Lane’s Celebrated Vermifuge, manufactured by

can now be had at all the respectable drug stoics.
