Williams, who had served in the campaign with flu ford’s gang in Kansas, among oth v er things, told the following horrible tale : * “In one of the hellish forays upon which we were sent, we came upon a small party of Free State men. They resisted our taking away their property, and !hford’s men left two of them dead upon the grass. Wfo-n w e were in Shawnee county, we were invited to cnli at one of the Mission Churches by the Chief of the tribe. As the doors opened before us what a sight presented itself! Three Massachusetts men hanging by the neck, for daring to say that they v-were for free soil, two had been shot,, and one stab bed to the heart, and they were hung up to strike terror to the people from th • Fast. “Four days after one of Bufford’s men came into the camp, holding upon the point of a bowie knife a human heart. “Boys,” said he, “see here; here is the heart of a d —d Abolitionist; he told me he was an Abolitionist, and 1 up with mv rifle and dropped him ; I cut his heart out, and it aint cold yet; now I’ll cut it open, and see how it looks inside; then I shall fry it and see how the d—d thing tastes.” We hope our readers will receive the above ac counts of a confessed renegade with all due allow ance. Such horrible stories as these are manufac tured for the Northern Fremont market.— N. Y. Day Book. Brothers in Congress. The election to Congress of three brothers, from different and distant States, last year, attracted at tracted attention. lion. Israel Washburn of Maine, lias been re-elected for the sth District of that State. Hon. Cadwalader C. Washburn, of Wisconsin, has also been nominated in his District. And the Ist District of Illinois has again presented the Hon. Eli hu B. Washburn, for re-election. Harvard and Yale. One hundred and twenty-six students have been admitted to the Freshman Class of Harvard—the largest number that ever entered that institution.— At Yale College, the academical year begins on the 17th inst. The New Haven Register says the Fresh man class will number over 150, which will be near ly up to the figure of last year, when there entered IST—fhe largest class on record. - -♦♦* Important Arrest. Don Vicente Hernandez de Ayala, Minister Plen ipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary from the Re publics of Venuezelo and Granada, Ac., was yester day arrested by Marshal Mauray and Dep. Marshal Scollick, on charges of forgery and swindling. Af ter his arrest he made an attempt to swallow forged drafts to the amount of $<5,000, but was prevented by a prompt squeeze on the throat by the Marshal, While Mr. Scollick drew the papers from his mouth. He is a Spaniard, well educated, and a most ac complished swindler, and many sufferers in New Orleans will rejoice at his incarceration. Ilis detec tion and arrest, on a very slight due, were most ar tistically plannned and skillfully executed. —Mobile Jfribnne, 15 th ult. - - 4iloU> An Article of Trade. A paper published in British Tndia, publishes a letter from a person at Karrakee, who says that he is determined to export 120,000 salted rats to Chi na. The Chinese eat rats, and he thinks they may sell. lie says he has to pay one pice a dozen, and the salting, gutting, pressing and packing in casks, raises the price to 6 pice a dozen, and if he should succeed in obtaining any thing like price that rules in Whampoa and Canton, for Corn grown rats, his fortune will se made ! fagTThe following is the latest parody on “Wood man, Spare that Tree Woman spare that tea! Touch not a single cup! Tn youth it tempted thee, But now, 0 give it up! I know’ thy mother’s hand First put it to thy lip ; But, woman let it stand, Unless it be catnip! what makes you limp so‘?” . “Limp ! I guess you’d limp if you had walked be tween two rows of barrel-hoops as long as I have. Why, the outside of my legs are as raw as a piece of beef; blit I have got an invention to cure that dif ficulty. I’m going to take them military pants of mine, and run a piece of bar steel light down through the stripes, and then if any hooped female, or walking cooper’s shop, invites me out, I think I shan’t have my legs saw’d off.” Hook once said (o a man, at whose table a publisher got very drunk, “Whj', you ap pear to have emptied your wine seller into your book, seller /” |agr“Au old stick says: “I have seen women so delicate that they were afraid to ride for fear of the horse running away —afraid to sail for fear the boat might upset —afraid to walk for fear that the dew might fall —but 1 never saw one that was afraid to be married.” jj£§?”A lady given to tattle, says she never tells anyting except to two classes of people—those who ask her and those who don’t. gggT’During an earthquake that occurred a few years since, the inhabitants of a small village were generally much alarmed, and at the same time sur prised at the calmness and apparent joy of an old la dy whom they ali knew. At length one of them, addressing the old lady, said— “ Mother , are you not afraid?” “No,” said the mother in Israel; “I rejoice to know that I have a God that can shake the world!” Extract of a letter received from Rev. 11.
