Gubernatorial race an obscure man from amid
th njountaina of the up count* y, and if we mistake
not a man who has been a .strong advocate of tem
perance-. But it is amusing, astonishing and morti
fyiug to see some of the Democratic Presses o the
, State laboring hard to relieve him of any temperance
principles or professions. Infamy and dishonor rest
upon those presses! Why should they, of their
own accord, take it opon themselves to say Mr.
Brown is not a tempei'anco man! 1 Why would they
not have him k temperance man? Will it injure
him in the race? God forbid that any citizen of
Georgia shall ever refuse to vote for a candidate for
office on the score of his being an advocate of tem
peranee] it is u far higher, nobler, and a more hon
orably recommendation, than to say he is a Dernd
erat. And it should be (and we hope will, ere long)
the principle element in any one’s qualification for
and the press which holds up a candidate as
an Anti-Temperance man, instead of benefiting the
man, should damn itself in the estimation of every
voter. The jeers and taunts heaped upon the tem
perance OauHe are only strong evidences of the base
ness, “imbecility, and degradation of those who are
guilty of the habit They show their own mental
weakness and deserve the sympathy of moral and
upright men, because of their polluted and degraded
natures. The drunken rabble, spoils-hunting dema
gogue, and sottish, mole-eyed political Editor, may
point the finger of scorn atthu candidate who claims
to be a lover of temperance, but that will not swerve
the so /er, sensible man, from his convictions of duty
and path of rectitute; and the day is coining when
the electioneering office-seeker will be glad to have
temperance constitute a plank in his platform. This
degrading system of treating to free liquors and
floating into office upon streams of whisky, will one
day he branded by the unanimous consent of the peo
ple, and the whole people as in famous demoralizing and
degrading. The ignorant masses are being educat
ed to the moral and governmental turpitude of the
practice, and he who offers a drink for a rote will he
rvbqked as an im; udent knave. Temperance has its
•bbs and its flows; it may be impeded in its pro
greas, but that will only madden and anger the
popular stream, for it will gather stremrth, though
it he driven back to the fountain. Our Cause is at
a stand now, but it will revive again—there is a
star aet in the gloom which tells of hope—there is a
low muttering among the masses gathering the
strength of an irresistless storm which shall wipe the
traffic f*oin our escutcheon as a damning plague.—
A righteous hulor in lJeaven is watching over the
struggles of this good Cause, and He will not let it
die, but will bring it out in the end gloriously tri
umphant
If Judge Brown is a temperance man, or ever
was, let him wear the honors of the reputation. It
is to his glory, and renders him thus far a reliable
tuan to superintend the machinery of State Govern
ment. The liquor-trafliic has too much executive
sanction already, and it is certainly time there was
it change in the character of the officers who admin
ister the affairs of State,

Object of Interest. —The philosopher, Dr. Bar
win, informs us that the reason why the bosom of a
beautiful woman is an object of such peculiar de
light, arises front hence—that all our first pleasurable
sensation of warmth, sustenance and repose are de
rived from this interesting source. This theory is
beautiful and no doubt to a certain extent, true, but
Ju& friend Pilkins says in his case, at least, can be
found an exception, l|e was brought up on “spoon
victuals,” and says that even the sight of a whole
table of spoons produces on him not the slightest
rapturous sensation.
Nevertheless there must be some truth in the the
ory, for /'kindles insists that the fondness for which
he is so notorious, is solely attributable to the fact
that he was brought up on a bottle, and has derived
“pleasurable sensations of warmth, sustenance and
repose,” from it ever since,

HOTEL FOR SALE.
We very much need a first rate Hotel in Penfield,
and with a view to securing one, the subscriber now
offers his House, built for, and originally occupied as
a Hotel, to any one wishing to engage in such busi
ness. The House is large and commodious, embra
cing twelve comfortable rooms, with convenient pan
tries; is beautifully and pleasantly situated on a lot
of fonr acres, with every appurtenance necessary to
commenoe immediately. The business, I think, will
pay any one who will conduct it properly, since any
number of boarders desired may be obtained, while
the proceeds of a single Commencement oocasion
will almost, if not quite, defray the annual expenses.
The subscriber is offering this property upon the
most reasonable terms, and any one who really de
sires it, can hardly fail, upon application, to find
everything to his liking. By paying a few hundreds
cash, an arrangement can be iQade by which a pur
