We issue this week to all our county Patrons, an Extra, Containing the Advertisements for this coun ty. The same kind of a sheet will be published each week during the recess. A number of important new advertisements will be found in this half sheet, and wc invite particular attention to them ; —especially to the sale of ne groes belonging to the estate of James B. Nickelson deceased. •* Tns New York Banks. —Telegraphic dispatches from New York state that notwithstanding the large shipments of gold to Europe by the Arabia and other steamers the specie line or the banks at the ensuing settlement day will show no curtailment but on the contrary a further increase and probably a total a mount not below twent-four million dollars. As to the prospect of a resumption of specie pay ments it is reported in well informed quarters that such a proceeding will certainly not take place fore the opening of the new year while others pre dict that there will be no res before spring. Presentation of turkeys. —Nearly two tons of of turkeys were presented lately to the employees, of the Boston|nd Worcester Railroad Company. A Modest Request.— ln the Tennessee Senate, Mr. Goodpasture presented a memorial from citi zens of Scott county, asking to be released from, tax ation on account of the hard times, and that an ap propriation of four or five thousand dollars be made for their benefit, . It is stated thatSam’lG. Goodrich has obtained a .verdict of SBOOO damages against a publishing firm for getting up books in the name of Peter Parley—- Mr. Goodrich’s “nom de plume.” Sewanne, in Benton county Tennessee about sev enty-five miles west of Nashville has been selected as the site of the proposed Episcopal “University of the south.” Hon. J. 11. Hammond was elected United States Senator by the Legislature of South Carolina on noonday last. We are gratified to learn as we did a few days ago from st member of his family who has soon h'm recently that a Judge Longstreet will accept the Presidency of the South Carolina College recently tendered by him by its Board of Trust. — Er. A Granite Bank. —The Hartford Times says that the assets of the Granite Bank Oonuetieut have been found to be between three and four hundred dollars in coin a one dollar bill and a second hand safe not yet paid for. The managers had issued bills to the amount of SI7OOO and scattered them about :n vari ous parts of the country. The Bank was kept in a kitchen and was to all appearances an out-and-out swindle. N. R. Slimson editor and proprietor of the New york Day Book died suddenly on the 30th November while on his way to Cypress Hills L. I. Mr. Stym son was on hfsway home in the? Long Island cars when the sad occurrence took place, lie entered the cars full of life and health but had not pvoeeded on his Journey more than a mile when the hand of death came upon him. The conductor of the . train saluted him just previous to the cars entering- the tunnel— when they emerged at the other side the deceased was found sitting lifeless in hi3 seat. It is supposed that disease of the heart was the cause of his sudden death. The School, under his direction, will no doubt, combine as many advantages, as any of like kind in the State. Young men will be prepared to enter College in the advanced classes, if desired.
