Atlanta Gets Gay Help Line
There’s something
new in town and now is
the time to get involved.
Training is going on now
for the Gay Help Line, an
informational and crisis
intervention telephone
service that we hope can
begin operation on a limi
ted basis during the first
week of August. At first
hours will be 6 p.m. to
11 p.m. seven days a
week. The line extends
its hours to 4 a.m. on
Friday and Saturday ni
ghts.
We will be providing
a telephone crisis inter
vention and counseling
service similar to that
provided by the Commu
nity Crisis Center, but
oriented toward gay
people. The staff of the
Gay Help Line will have;
counselors trained by the
Community Crisis Center
in telephone crisis inter
vention and problems-i
solving-oriented counse- 1
ling. We have an ex- 1
tensive library of infor
mation on gay activities
and meeting places in the
Atlanta area, and we can
also give you a feeling
about the atmosphere and
the dangers in these va
rious places. The Gay
Help Line is where to
call when you’re in a
crisis, feeling lonely and
needing to talk, or when
you need information
about bars, the church,
or other gay meeting
places and activities.
The staff of the Gay
Help Line hopes to ex
pand its activities to be
come a complete Gay
Community Services
Center. We envision a
building where gay people
can drop in and rap 24
hours a day, and where
we can have a large va
riety of social activities
such as dances, parties,
rap groups about various
gay-related topics, and
whatever else people want
to do. We hope to ex
pand our presently li
mited activities in city
politics and in our speak
er ^“bureau"~wfilcfc pro-"'
vides speakers knowled
geable on gay issues to
various groups in the
community. Right now
our immediate plans in
clude getting together
some fund-raising proj
ects. We need people'
who are willing to either
donate money, or donate
their time, energy and
ideas to fund-raising pro-!
jects. . {
We are a receptive
group eager to meet new
people and listen to their.l
ideas. If you want to
help us, or pledge a mon
thly donation, please call
us at 874-4400 or write
us c/o P.O. Box 7974
Atlanta, Ga. 30309.
The Gay Help Line
staff meets on the first
Tuesday of each month at
8 p.m. Metropolitan Com
munity Church 800 N.
Highland Ave., and visi
tors are always welcome.
