Gays Meet With Mayor
Continued from page 4
Revs. John Gill and Jim Snow
With Mayor Jackson
In England, carrying caterpillers about was prescribed as an
aid to toothache!
Commissioner Smith
asked for the Mayor’s
support of the program
presented by
Atlanta’s Community Re
lations Commission,
which includes gay rights
legislation. Jackson in
dicated his support of the
need for such legislation
and added that he had al
ready begun reviewing the
CRC program proposal,
and was now awaiting the
specific language of the
legislation before taking
further action.
Rev. Gill noted the
difficulty in asking com
munity people to respect
police and other admini
strative officials, when

many of diem use terms
that are abusive to gay
people. Rev. Gill also
stated that many times
these terms were used
because the person using
them - had no knowledge
of gay people and what
might be offensive to
them.
Commissioner Smith
requested that Mayor
Jackson issue an execu
tive order requesting
city employees to use only
the following terms whey
they find it necessary to
indicate the sexuality of
a gay person: Gay or
homosexual for both
males and females, and
lesbian for females only.
Mayor Jackson agreed
readily with Commis
sioner Smith’s proposal
and promised that such
an order would be issued.
The immediate pro
blem of gay harassment
by the police department
is still upon us. It is
obvious to those in at
tendance at the con
ference with Mayor Jack-
son that the ground work
for legislation is being
laid to prevent this type
of harassment. The bur
den is now upon the cojn-
munity to support the
legislative proposals by
letting the Atlanta City
Council know that this
legislation is imperative!
New Racetrack
That new racetrack is really
impressive. It cost $44 million to
build; the grandstand is ten stor
ies high; has 800 windows; 10
bars and 5 restaurants. Imagine
all this - just for someone to get
their rent money!
