The Barb 8 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES By Bill Smith Why should gay peo ple vote? “Why should I, as a gay person vote? Those guys don’t care about us.” Moving through the community I have heard that statement made countless times. For many candidates in the August 13th primary the statement would be appli cable. This year many of those people have strong opposition from strong people - oriented candidates that do care. Gay people have a choice; they can stay and let others decide for mem or they can go to the polls and be heard. It is important that gays vote for two reasons. First we have a chance to elect a significant num ber of people-oriented politicians this year. Se condly if, while “our” candidates do not: win or the margin of loss is small it will serve notice to the winner of the stren gth of the opposition, and may well force him or her to think hard on many new issues. Each primary race, both Republican and Democrat is important. There are four races in the Democratic primary that I feel are verv significant. First the democratic primary for the office of Governor. There Jtre so many can didates seeking this office that one needs a pocket calculator to compute the number. Everyone knows who Lester Maddox is but af ter that it is a jumble of people from odd lit tle towns like Enigma and Calhoun. In that jumble, one candidate emerged as a strong advocate of in dividual rights. He does not appear to be tied to the special interest groups that have con trolled our state in the past. He can not solve all the problems, nor does he claim to be able to do so. He is willing' to listen, something that many politicians do not know how to do. This man is Burt Lance of Calhoun, Georgia. I urge you to consider hTs plat form, to support him and to vote August 13th for Burt Lance. In the race for the Georgia Senate, District 37 Martha Gaines is op posing Ed. Garrard in the Democratic primary. There is no Republican candidate in the 37th, thus tMs race will be decided in the August 13th Demo cratic primary. Martha Gaines has concern for people. She has been active in the Atlanta area in many pro jects such as E.R.A. and N.O.W. Garrard represe nts your landlord, not you. Martha Gaines has wor ked to make the 37th a place for people. She has the support of the leader- sMp of many civic groups, both black and wMte. She is not afraid of tough issues. She is commit ted strongly to repealing laws against victimless crimes. If you are vo ting in the Democratic primary, I urge you to vote for Martha GaineV During the races for City. Council last fall a young Advertising execu tive lest a close race to Councilman George Cot- sakis. This young man would be sitting on the Council today if gay people had voted. We held the margin of victory in Ms district and failed to utilize it. He is run ning for Fulton County Commissioner, Post 2 county wide. I^ay Abernathy repre sents the type of vigor and drive that Fulton County needs. He is a man with great potential, in integ rity and ability to lead. I urge you to work for and support Ray Abernathy. The FultonGounty Commission District 5 race is blessed with se veral excellent candi dates. Each has work ed significantly in the area of equal justice and opportunity for all peo ple. One candidate, how ever, has worked longer and harder. He has spo ken courageously and ef fectively to the issue of police abuse of citizens.. He has done this at great personal expense..He is ‘the editor of the Atlanta Voice, J. Lowell Ware. If you live in Districts, 1 urge you to support, work for, and on August 13th vote to elect J. Lo well Ware. The August 13th pri mary, whether you vote in the Democratic primary of the Republican primary will decide many races. You can skip the primary,' but if you do you may find little to choose from in November. The fault will, be yours. Vote August 13th. STUD m Will You Be the Barb’s Stud of the month in Sep tember?
