THE BARB - 4 cl M;W** The title of Mr. Club Baths International was bestowed on Jim Waaland, representing Club Toledo, before a capacity crowd at the Everglades Hotel in Miami. Florida, on the night of February 20,1975. Waaland took the top trophy and S5Q0.00 cash award . by outscoring the 23 other Club contestants in a threefold contest in cluding image creation, self-expression and swim suit competitions. The first runner - up trophy and $300.00 prize award went to Eddie Abshire. representing Club Houston. Club Tampa’s entrant, Joe Young, won second runner-up honors, including a trophy and $100.00 cash presentation. The winner of the Mr. Congeniality plaque and accompanying $50.00 prize was Mr . Club Philadelphia, Harold Weiss. Emcees for the glittering four-hour show were Tiffany Jones and the holder of the Mr. Club Baths International 1974 title, Bruce Eden. Hundreds of spectators crowded for the best seats as the dazzling spectacular of contestants, en tertainers, and production numbers unfolded non-stop. Included in the prestigious roster of those performing were Daphne Delight, Noly Greer, Josephine Baker, and Sex Incorporated, a trio from St. Louis: The show was opened with the vocal artistry of famed photographer David Vance’s performance of the popular song “The Singer” was met with the thunderous applause that was t© punctuate the show throughout. In fact, it was audience response that forced the only deviation from the from the program during the evening. The executive director of the Club Bath Chain, r Jerry Batal, was forced to call an unscheduled 10 - minute intermission at the request of the audience, who needed a “powder room” break, but were afraid of missing part of the show. Scenic design credits went to David garrison, who outfitted the ballroom UB BA THS INTERNATIONAL Then, with performers, contestants and CBC officials scattered onstage and through the audience, all joined into a hand holding, raised-arm per formance of “United We Stand. ’' Three encores of the number were necessary as audience members joined in the s.inging and, in many cases, tears of joyful pride that concluded an evening none present will ever forget. Show highlights also in cluded the performance of “Leader of The Pack” by the delightfully hefty trio Sex Incorporated. The number was enhanced by the intricate strobe lighting director Joe Costa. Noly Greer’s “baby crib” company heightened excitement by throwing more than 150 large stuffed animals into the audience. While Tiffany Jones expanded her famous roller skating nun routine by adding two additional nunclad performers as back up Several in ^inanimate “stars” also stunned those present, including a 19- foot break-away banana, a stage-engulfing smoke screen, slide projector presentations, and large paper backdrops through which performers made “smashing” entrances. But despite all the glitter and levity, the emotional highlight of the evening was one of quiet reflection and unity. Executive director of the show. Jerry Batal, brought Club Bath Chain president Jack Campbell onto the stage.
