NGTF COMES SOUTH
Dr. Bruce Voeller, Executive
Director of the National Gay Task
Force (NGTF) opened his
southern tour with ari address at
the Charlotte campus of the
University of North Carolina
(UNC).
Dr. Voeller was part of a
symposium on homosexuality
sponsored by the Black Student
Union at UNC, Charlotte. The
week long program included
Barbara Gittings, Director of the
American Library Association’s*
Task Force on Gay Liberation,,
Reverend Elder John Gill, pastor
of MCC-Atlanta and a member of
the Universal Fellowship of
Metropolitan Community
Churches Board of Elders and
Frank Kameny of the District of
Columbia Community Relations
Commission.
Moving further south, Dr.
Voeller spoke to a good crowd of
almost fifty students at the
University of Georgia (UG). Jody
O’Connell president of the
student body government at UG
and former chairperson of the
Committee on Gay Education at
UG questioned Dr. Voeller on the
emergence and direction of the
gay civil rights movement
nationally.

many ways the activists and
programs of nationally oriented

In District B, the incumbent
Judson Robinson, Jr. (supported
by G. P. C.) received 73.1% or
113,947 votes. In District C, ■
Louis Macey received 22.3% of
the total vote and faces a run off
against Jeanne Elliott who re
ceived 19.7%. Jim Whitmore,
(supported by G. P. C.) received
13.8% or 24,369 total votes,
coming in third in a race of
eleven contenders.
In District D, the incumbent
Homer Ford, (supported by G.
P. C.) received 60.2% or 97,954
votes and in District E, Frank
Mancuso, the incumbent beat
G. P. C. choice Helen Hopkins,
receiving 100,645 (62.2%) votes
to Ms. Hopkins 60,918 (37.7%).
In Houston, the city council
members representing individual
districts are still elected by the
whole city. An unbinding straw
vote was held whereby each
council person would be elected
by only the voters residing in
each separate district. This pro
position passed.
In an effort to increase Gay
voter participation, 10,000 pam
phlets were printed and distrib
uted to all Gay establishments
the week before the election. At
all precincts in the Westheimer-
Montrose area of the city, these
pamphlets were handed out to
voters as they went to the polls
to vote.
A Westheimer-Montrose pre
cinct, no .34, showed gay stren
gth. In this precinct, Jim Whit
mire, running for council person,
District C pulled 187 votes,
higher than any other contender,
tn the Mayor’s race, Hofheinz
pulled 533^ votes to the next
highest contenders 182 votes.

organizations such as NGTF were
emphasizing the legislative needs
of the gay community ratner than
the ideological purity of the gay
movement.
In an interview with The Barb,
Dr. Voeller elaborated on the
goals and areas of emphasis of
NGTF. Mr. Voeller indicated that
national legislation coupled with
the necessary media coverage
were the major areas of concern
for NGTF. The importance of the
Media Task Force cannot be
seperated from the legislative
priority; They work hand in hand,
each enhancing the other.
In Atlanta Dr. Voeller met
briefly with numerous southern
gay activists and support groups.

Pyschologist Emory School of
Medicine assembled a blue
ribbon group of civil rights ac
tivists. Dr. Louie Crew, founder
of INTEGRITY, Dr. Ara
Dostourian. INTEGRITY-
Atlanta’s Convenor, Marty
Cochran President of Dignity
Atlanta, Reverend Elder John
Gill, Gene Guerro President of
ACLU Georgia, Sheryl Pence
member of the board of Directors,
National Organization of Women
and numerous other gay and non
gay activists and community
leaders.
The NGTF has over 2,500
members nation wide and'has
attracted attention and
recognition for its continued
effectiveness in creating a
national network of information
for gay civil rights.
