“Why is being a homosexual so
bad? There are some two to four
million homosexual (men) In this
country alone, and t they lead
relatively normal lives except in
their personal sexual preferences.
Also it has been found that most
are more mentally stable than
their heterosexual counterparts. I
don’t believe that these men
should be labeled “depraved” for
their acts anymore than the
bisexual or heterosexual should
be labeled perverse because of
the actions of a few of the more
exhibitionistic of their number.
“Even the church has finally
come of age and recognized that
true affection/love is possible
between members of the same
sex and are accepting known
honosexuals into their flocks.
“The important thing for the
man worried about his
masculinity to remember is that
its not something you put on like a
suit of clothes and being a
homosexual doesn’t mean that
you have to or will lose your
masculinity. Also no amount of
medicine or psychoanalysis is
going to help you without a great
dead of patience and true desire
to change.” *

ATLANTA - Five democratic
party presidential hopefuls at
tended the Southern Regional
Democratic Conference in Atlanta
October 31st and November 1st.
The Conference was sponsored
by newspaper publisher Hodding
Carter III and Congressman
Andrew Young (D-GA). Arizona
Representative Morris Udall and
Pennsylvania Governor Milton
Shapp spoke on Friday; former
Governor Jimmy Carter, former
Oklahoma Senator F^red Harris
and 1972 Democratic Vice
Presidential nominee Sargent
Shriver spoke on Saturday.
The forum was one of five that
are being sponsored by the
National Democratic Forum.
Pennsylvania Governor Milton
Shapp reinstated his commitment
to doing the same things in
Washington on a national level
that he has done on a state level
in Pennsylvania. Shapp issued an
executive order banning
discrimination against gay people
by state agencies and has an
nounced his intention of vetoing a
bill that would override his
executive order.
Former Georgia Governor
Jimmy Carter avoided the issue of
gay rights. His conflicting
statements to The Advocate and
Boston’s Gay Community News
Has obfuscated his position.
Former Oklahoma Senator Fred
Harris is the must forthright in
his position on gay rights. He is
the only candidate that has in
cluded his position on gay rights
within his regular campaign
literature. The dynamic
Oklahoman has assembled an
incongruous group of supporters
ranging from academic in
tellectuals to as he puts it
“mississippi Red-necks.”
1972 Democratic Vice
Presidential nominee and former
Peace Cote' Director Sargent
Shriver has moved from his
position of purging homosexuals
in government (which he did as
director of the Peace Core) and
his 1972 statement of “To hell
with gays” and “Some people say
the Democratic Party is the party
of hippies, fags and communists. i
. . I can assure you that nothing i
could be further from the truth.” i
To the 1975 Shriver which stated
“I support the civil rights of all
people regardless of race or
sexual preference or whatever.”
Shriver’s statement was
greeted by a mild round of ap
plause from his Atlanta audience
which appeared to surprise him.
Shriver, however, avoided an
swering questions concerning
what ho would do specifically
concerning gay civil rights
legislation and the inclusion of
gay people in his administration.
Indiana Senator Birch Bayh
who has gained increasing
support from gay activists in
other sections of the country
including Massachusetts State
Representative Elaine Noble did
not attend the conference.
Washington Senator Henry
“Scoop” Jackson the most openly
anti-gay candidate also did not.
attend the conference.
Former Georgia Governor Jimmy

Noted Italian film director Pier
Pailo Pasolini was found slain on
a deserted dirt road between
Ostia Beach and Fimuicine.
“Pasolini was a prominent
Marxist intellectual, his poems,
essays, novels and films often
depicting blind violence among
the rich and poor. . He exposed
shocking violence to show that it
was an inevitable part of life,
much as he assailed it.” ac-
. xdrtiing to the Rome "Bureau of
Associated Press,
Pasolini was a well known
champion of minority causes
relationship between straight and
gay creative persons.
Exhibited throughout the hotel

of jewelry, macrame, photograh-
py, leather crafts, free forms,
painting and portriat sculpture.
Bill Staz’ metal sculpture
collection, “Fish of the Carib

ceptional interest.
Plans are to make the art show

a year. Those interested can

including homosexuals.
Pasolini was beaten on the
head with a piece of wood by a 17-
year old youth who stated that
Pasolini struck him first during a
fight which ensued after the
youth allegedly refused sexual
advances from Pasolini. The
youth has been charged with the
slaying of Pasolini.
The police report indicated that
“Pasolini’s head was smashed by
repeated blows from a crude
wooden bat and his body run over
by his own car.”
