A more diverse
croup than gay people is hard to
imagine. Neither nationality,
religion nor economics tie us
ogcthcr. Fven oppression fails.
Hie law varies from state to state
almost as much as it s en
forcement. Social acceptance is
even more variable.
Tire idea of unifying such a
diverse force of women and men
is one that as a political student
has intrigued men. What is the
magic formula that would unite
this group. Is unification
possible?
A good friend of mine wore
a large box in a gay pride week
parade several years ago on
which she had painted some of
the occupations in which gay
people could be found, doctors,
lawyers, teachers, prcacher-
s . . . the box was covered.
Tlic punch line was. “If I show
mv face I lose my job."

Many of us are quite secure
in our jobs whether they be truck
drivers or our own business.
Jobs may not be the magic
formula but perhaps the basic of
a unifying factor.
Many gay people are
concerned about the economic as
well as the social consequences
of being gay. If any issue can
unite us the need for legislation
to protect our right to earn a
living is the issue that the
majority of gay people can unite
under.
I have attended dozens of
conferences over the past few
years that set out to form
cohesive groups to fight for gay
rights. Few have met with even
a modicum of success.
Nationally. several
organizations from the
Matachinc to the highly visablc
National Gay Task Force have
attempted to form broad
coalitions. Only NGTF has
caught the media's eye. That is
a key ingredient in a national
organization's success.
All sorts of people tried to
organize from conservatives to
leftists from local activists to
students. I have never been to a
gay conference organized by a
successful businessman.
Perhaps it will be more suc
cessful.
1 have never met David
Goodstcin. the publisher of The
Advocate. I know him only
through mutual acquaintances
and his remarks in The
Advocate’s Opening space. On
that basis I would conclude that
we have some severe differences
of opinion on the health of the
gay civil rights movement and its
future.
1 think, it is unfair to define
Goodstcin as a rights wing neo-
fascist on the basis of his now
famous January 14th column.
Newswest and others have run
the “Buck Shot” editorial
cartoon depicting Goodstein’s
Advocate Invitational Con
ference as an organizational
meeting of a new Nazi party.
Goodstein’s January 14th
article was, in my opinion, the
view helf by many conservative,
well-to-do- homosexuals. I
the gay movement have earned
their success. No one gave them
their status. By the same token
it is unfair to say that Goodstcin
has bought his position. He has
taken the same public risks as
Mark Segal. Troy Perry and
others. Financially the risk
Goodstcin has taken is greater.
Goodstein’s mud-throwing
at the more flamboyant is
reprehensible. The backlash is
just as bad. We need support
from all types of people from the
center and both sides of the
political spectrum. Instead of
trying to force all gay people to-
oiioside let us support the gay
strength in each of the political
camps, and in the many
lifestyles that make up America.
Would Elaine Noble. Alan
Spear and Troy Perry do the
unquestioned bidding of David
Goodstcin or anyone else for that
matter? Can one person force
Matchinc, NGTF and others to
muzzel a Mark segal or Ray
Bmshears.
Let us be reasonable aboul
this conference. The guest list
of this conference includes some
impressive, independent minds;
some conservative, some liberal.
Each person is highly successful
and motivated in his or her fields
of endeavor
The oonteience should oe
viewed as another attempt to
galvanize and solidify effective
action in Washington on behalf
of gay rights - nothing more,
nothing less.

purpose, he hopes, will be able
to provide legal/professional
