HOUSTON STORY......
Houston’s gay community
breathed a collective sigh of
relief after the primary returns
came in on May I. It had looked
as if Ron Waters, State
Representative for most of the
Montrose area and a very good
friend of the gay community was
in a lot of trouble with his
primary race.
The Gay Political Caucus
called for a state of emergency in
a special mailing sent out for
Ron, and it definitely turned the
tide in his favor. After looking at
the returns a little over 60 per
cent for Waters, everyone
wondered if there had ever been
a problem. The gay community
is being credited though with the
overwhelming majority, but
remember, no one can really
relax until November comes and
we see Ron safely back in
Austin Keep up the good work
and turn out at them polls.
Incidentally, someone got
hold of the “emergency” letter
for Waters and had a lot of
copies made which were sent to
some very unsympathetic
recipients. GPC’s phone was
ringing constantly for a little bit
there and most of what was said
wasn’t too nice.
The MetropolitanCommunity
Church of the Ressurecnon
(MCCR) recently celebrated its
first anniversary with a dinner at
the church. Featured speaker
was, who else, but Ron Waters
who spoke about the future for
gays in Texas.
MCCR still hasn’t heard
anything from the police
department on their recent
challenge to them for a/softball
game to be held during Gay
Pride Week. They’re keeping
their fingers crossed though ana
it’s rumored that more than a
few of the church’s members ■
were seen out in back practicing -
a few fast pitches.
By the way, all of Houston’s
gay organizations are hard at
work planning Gay Pride
Weeks to be held in June.
Activities already lined up
in dude a parade and a State Gay
Convention to beheld right here
in Houston.
Th ere’s a new organization
just starting up now too. It’s
basic purpose is to have no other
purpose than to provide an
informal setting for discussion
about just about anything and to
help tie the community together
a little more. It meets on
Tuesdays at 7:30 at the Unitarian
church on Fannin
Some very nice reports have
been' filtering back from those
who attended “Gay in San
Antonio, A sense of Belonging”
held the first weekend in May. It
looked as if there were going to
be some real problems getting it
off the ground - including a two
inch red headline in San
Antonio’s ‘Express’. All went
well though, and the US
Government, which funded the
seminar can consider its money
well spent.
GPC’s Don Hrachovy says
he’s taking it easy for a bit now.
Don did an awful lot of work
heading up the group’s voter
0&3I
registration drive fof the. May *1**
primary and added over 80?f new
names to the lists in less than a
month. But Don’s looking
forward to October, and you can
all look forward to seeing him
standing outside of the Old
Plantation and The Depository
then too. And this time, if you
don’t want to register, please
don’t tell Don you’re a convicted
felon, he’s scared to death to go
anywhere now because of all the
criminals.
Summer certainly seems to
be heading our way very quickly.
The scene at the North of the
beach in Galveston last week was
really something to behold The
only said thing is that the thongs
seems to be a thing of the past,
and I don’t mean the kina for
your feet, silly.
With summer too comes a lot
of rain and that means that the
mud in back of Mary’sis getting
pretty deep. Hasn't anybody
ever heard of grass?
This past Monday things .
seemed to be really hopping at
the Depository. It was like a
Saturday night, the place was
positively packed - you know, a
real tight nt. No one seemed to
know what was going on, except
that daylight savings and a
beautiful weekend made
everybody want to keep right on
going, and they did.
That’s it for now, see ya
around.

MIAMI- The day starts with
Bloody Marys and celery stalks,

Windward, Florida’s newest
disco-hotel-restaurant sensation
in Florida, opened on May Day
to a sizzling, enthusiastic Miami-
Ft. lauderdale crowd.
The switch from “singles

previously mild mannered
Miami Beach hotel into a haven
for brown bodied vacationers
girating themselves from pool to
private beach to dance floor.
Strategically located are bars

Upstairs is a soon to open private

freshly decorated rooms.
The Windward’s
metamorphosis comes as a
response to the growing interest
in Florida by vacationers. With a
record season experienced by
the Marlin Beach hotel (Ft.

as “excellent” by 8000 Club
