August 1976, THE BARB -10
Flossie Florida Reports
by Peter Thomas
The merry, merry month
of August and Florida is just
jammed with pussycats
vacationing in the fabulous
sun and on the fabulous
beaches of Florida. There’s
something to do every
minute of the day and night
in America’s wonderful
vacation State of Florida, and
here’s a peek at some of
those delights.
FT. LAUDERDALE: It’s a
busy season at the charming
Bela-Mar Motel at 3801 N.
Ocean Boulevard. The rates
are low, the rooms are
comfortable, and the at
mosphere is friendly and
informal. Who could ask for
anything more? Get your
reservations in today by
calling Pete or Ed at (305)

pton’s superb new sculpture,
Sweethearts, is perfect for
your own home, or a perfect
gift. A soulful and con
temporary rendition of the
American tradition of
‘keeping company’ it depicts
a nude boy and girl in light
and affectionate embrace.

9th Street, Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla. 33316.....Tacky’s, one of
Ft. Lauderdale’s top bars is
looking for stars, and you can
be sure those stars will be
found in the two sensational
contests planned for August.
On August 5th it’s the Ms.
Tacky Contest, and on
August 12th it’s the Mr.
Tacky Contest. You know
that Flossie always says
every night is a winner at
Tacky’s and so is every
KNIGHT - Get it? Some
of my happiest hours are
spent at the GROTTO where
in fact on Monday and
Wednesdays the happy hour
lasts from four to seven P.M.
and draft beer is only 25
cents. That’s a real bargain,
but the clincher is the motto:
“Let no one be a stranger”.
Drop in and find out for
yourself.....Dined at the
POOP DECK again and I
sincerely recommend this top
eatery for superb cuisine,
superb service, and superb
SIGHTS. I may be near
sighted but I can spot a
pussycat from ten miles
away.....I’m getting such
compliments about my hair
ever since I started going to
the HAIR CLINIC AT
E. Oakland Park
Blvd., for my coiffures. A
lovely styling can do wonders
to highlight or soften your
facial features, and the top
hairstylists here know what’s
best for you.. Call 561-8416
for your appointment and be
a lovelier YOU. You’ll also
be told how to care for your
hair, and that’s so important
in these days of good
grooming.....There’s only
one place for me when I want
a super Italian dinner and
that is TONY’S VILLA at
2468 Wilton Manor Drive.
Dinner is served until 1:00
A.Ml, and the food is top-
notch Italian and
REASONABLE. Call 563-
1201 for your reservations.
KEY WEST: No trip to Key
West is complete without a
visit to top disco
DELMONICO’s, and for
romantic atmosphere you
haven’t seen since Ford
(Glenn, that is) met
Hayworth, have a drink in
the outdoor New Street Bar,
all part of the DELMONICO
complex.....There should be
no question in your mind, or
mine, about where to stay
while vacationing in Key
West because the KEY
LODGE MOTEL is clean,
comfortable, close to beaches
and bars, and reasonably
priced. Try it, you’ll like
it! As always dinner at
the PORT OF CALL on Front
Street is an absolute MUST
for lovers of fine food.
Dning here is a gourmet
treat that must not be
missed.
MIAMI: Find your way to
the CLUB MIAMI at 2991
Coral Way for some treats
you’ll never forget. It’s an
A-number 1 bath and such a
pleasant way to pass the time
of day or night.
SOUTH DAYTONA: No
matter what sign you are,
you must visit the ZODIAC, a
veritable palace of dancing
delights. The music is
danceable, the dance floor is
Large, and the flawless
sound system at this disco,
makes this place a favorite of
Flossie’s who always wanted
to be Gaydom’s Ann Miller.
Tappety-tip-tap, Honey!
ORLANDO: Billed as the
Gay Kingdom, the
PARLIAMENT HOUSE has
just about everything you
want under one roof in
cluding disco, dining, and
drinking. It’s THE place to
stay when you’re vacationing
in Orlando.
HALLANDALE: My heels
are worn down from dancing
at KEITH’s, where Flossie is
affectionately ((??) known as
the ‘Dancing Fool’. This
disco stays open tif the wee
hours and always seems to
be full of the cutest pussycats
in town. Darling, would you
save me a place at the bar?

News by Joel Starkey -n- Mark Silber
PENSACOLA: The “Parents
of Gays” and the “Lambda
Society” have both given
support to demonstrations
planned by gays at both the
Democratic and Republican
party conventions to be held
shortly. The sponsoring
group for the militant
demonstrations is the
NATIONAL COALITION of
GAY ACTIVISTS and is
located in New York City
(P.O. Box A 711, Grand
Central Station, N.Y.C.,
N.Y. 10017).
The organization is planning
to draw enough support from
within the gay community to
yeild a highly visible
presence at both con
ventions. By doing so, the
group hopes to present and
build a campaign that will
end subversion of gay rights
as was the case recently
when the U.S. Supreme
Court upheld the ‘Virginia’
sodomy statues.
The Lamda Society has also
indicated that it will be
sending at least three ob-

LOCKER ROOM for a bath
that’s large, clean, com
fortable and reasonable.
How can you go wrong with
three floors of living dolls?
You’ll love it here and you’ll
be treated with such courtesy
that it’ll make your visit a
delight!
That’s about it for now,
kiddies. Please remember
that the best way to travel is
to stay at, and patronize, the
places that ADVERTISE for
YOU. These are the
establishments that will
welcome -you with open
arms, and where you’ll meet
your kind of people. Visit the
places that advertise in the
BARB, and it will help make
your vacation a delightful
one. When you go, GO
GAY! In the meantime
remember that for every old
shoe there’s an old sock, so
keep on looking because
somewhere out there is a
pussycat just for you. Until
next month, love from F. F.
servors from the state of
Florida to the upcoming
Texas Gay Conference.
KEY WEST: A small victory
was won by gay people in
this small city when the Navy
Department informed Ms.
Patricia Veldon that she will
be retained in the Navy even
though an administrative
‘discharge’ board recom
mended her removal.
According to the Armed
Services Informer, a
publication of gay service
people; “the Navy Depar
tment refuses comment on
its decision to keep Veldon in
the service referring to its
limitations under the Privacy
Act.”
The Armed Forces Informer
further adds, “At first the
Navy felt it could discharge
Veldon on the basis of un
fitness feeling that she had
involved herself in
homosexual acts. They
quickly changed it to only
tendencies u hen they found
that the evidence just wasn’t
there. Veldon supporters
and her attorney, Carol
Scott, were prepared to take
the case to the courts if the
Navy Department approved
the decision of the
‘discharge’ board,”
FORT LAUDERDALE: The
Gay Academic Union of
Florida Atlantic University
recently won a small victory
after protesting the exclusion
of women from a male-
oriented bar associated with
large Gay Disco. The
Tangerine Disco had
established an upstairs bar
with a definately all male
orientation and proceeded to
prohibit women from en
tering.
After lengthy discussions at
G.A.U. meetings, it was
decided to send a letter of
protest first. If that failed it
was decided a more militant
form of protest would be
used such as distribution of
flyers and a picket line.
However, a letter was sent
on behalf of the Gay
Academic Union protesting
the discrimination.
Acknowledging receipt of the
letter, the management has
assured the Gay Academic
Union that said
discrimination has been
terminated.
MIAMI: Bob Kunst,
chairperson of a GAY
“SHOW ON THE ROAD”
project, has indicated that ;
eight people are now in
volved in the project. The
project hopes to develop a
plan of action to activize each
local community within
Florida. The Gay SHOW ON
THE ROAD project hopes to
develop a plan of action to
activize each local com
munity within Florida, The
GAY SHOW ON THE ROAD
project will come into each
local community and conduct
publicity and media
programs to focus attention
on the positive aspects of
being gay and homosexual
and by doing so hopes to
build more effective gay
organization within the gay
community in each local
community

alternative press newspaper
called ‘Come Unity’ devoted
an entire issue to the gay
community. As guest |

Alliance did a superb job in I

devoted . to letters received
from gay prisoners
throughout the country and
focused oh the National Gay
Prisoners Coalition.
