Gay people have
generally not participated in
the American political
system. Most Americans do
not vote. Barely 50 per cent
of eligible voters voted in
our last elections.
Gay people have, perhaps,
more reason to feel that
voting is a waste of time.
Gay rights has not been a
major issue and few can
didates have taken a position
on it.
Times do change and
so do issues. Gay rights is
still not the burning issue
that black or women’s rights
have become. In certain
areas it is a significant issue.
These are test areas. The
media will report them and
the politicians will react to
the strength or weakness
shown by the gay people.
In Atlanta the most
significant race is Georgia
House D strict 27. We
endorse and urge vour
support for Mike Nichols. A
win for Nichols will not
mean an end to Georgia’s
antiquated sexuality statutes
but a loss will certainly delay
any possible reform.
Mr. Nichols will
hopefully join two other
legislators who have sup
ported sexual law reform in
the past. State Senator
Julian Bond(D) and State
House Representative
Sidney Marcus(D), both of
whom are up for re-election.
There are numerous
races of significance to gay
rights in the South. We are
endorsing an unprecidented
number of candidates in our
3rd election year issue.
Some will look at the list
and become excited over the
large number of candidates.
Others will frown and note
the number of Southern
states where no en
dorsements are made.
What ever position you
take, please note that where
no endorsements were made
the candidates didn’t say no
to gay rights they were
simply not asked about this
position. In Atlanta,
Houston, and Miami where
the majority of acceptable
candidates are found a
concerted effort by a few
dedicated people have
uncovered an unprecedented
number of candidates willing
and in some cases eager to
support gay rights.
Now that I have
delivered my third annual
lecture on participating in
the political process, I’d like
to close with a personal note
on our staff.
The BARB staff is largely
volunteer. Each issue is the
result of their generous
contribution of time, talent,;
and efforts. Since becoming
editor and publisher of THE
BARB, I have been fortunate
in also having a ’‘girl
friday” to take care of the
work
that comes into our office.
Richard Lee was a. dedicated
person whose year long stay
enabled THE . BARB to
servive and grow. Beth
Baker Lord assisted me for
two months after Richard
resigned. T.C.Wade then
stepped bravely into the hot
seat. He and his lover Skip

THE BARB are bound for
sunny California. Both Skip
& T.C. will be missed. I am
sure it is difficult for you as
a reader to understand the
importance or the
tremendous pressure a
person comes under when
they attempt,to be the catch
all of a volunteer
organization. It is an im-
E ossible task. The hours are
mg, the financial rewards
are non-existant. T.C. has
done an exemplary job. It
will be difficult to replace
him.
We wish T.C. and §kip

Mike Nichols, (D),
candidate in the 27th House
District, reiterated his
strong support for the
revision of Georgia’s an

His.opponent, Bill Baldwin,
in a telephone interview with
Gil Robison did not see it as
an urgent issue and ad
mitted that his onoonent.
Mike Nichols, was better
informed on the issue.
Ray McDaniel (D>,
candidate for the 47th House
District in DeKalb County,
has also stated that he would
support laws that would
guarantee the civil rights of
gay people and the repeal of
the sodomy statutes.
Cathy Steinberg (D), who
is also running for the House
of Representatives in
DeKalb County, but in the
46th District, has indicated
that she strongly favors
individual civil liberties and
is aware of the concerns of
the gay community. .

fully support gay rights,
were willing to be publically
pro-gay for fear that op
position, would use it against
them.”
On the other hand few
candidates were openly anti
gay. One heard statements
such as, “I really haven’t
given it much thought,” or
simply, “I have no comment
to make.”
Robison stated that he
felt the low response factor
and the ‘closetedness’ of
many of the candidates were
due largely to their never
having been confronted with
gay concerns as a serious
civil rights issues.
“It is up to us to make
the candidates aware that
gay people do not have the
basic rights that most people
take for granted. The
sodomy statutes are still
being enforced. Gay people
are still being fired from
their jobs, passed over for
promotion or not being hired
at all. The courts are still
taking children away from
their mothers and fathers. If:
we do nothing we must
continue to live with the
consequences of our inac
tion.”
